Ekavian and Ijekavian Serbian

Standard Serbian has two accepted realizations of the historical vowel traditionally called jat: Ekavian and Ijekavian. Ekavian forms include млеко, време, место; Ijekavian Serbian has млијеко, вријеме, мјесто. They are equal standard possibilities within Serbian, not formal and informal levels.

This guide uses Ekavian as its main productive model because learners benefit from one consistent baseline. You should nevertheless recognize Ijekavian Serbian from the beginning and never “correct” it merely for being Ijekavian. Detailed formation belongs on the spelling and pronunciation pages; here the focus is regional distribution and learner choice.

One System Per Speaker or Text

Speakers normally use a coherent learned system, not a free choice for each word. Ekavian predominates across much of Serbia. Ijekavian Serbian is standard among many Serbian speakers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, and diaspora communities, and it occurs elsewhere through family history and mobility.

После посла идемо у ново место поред реке.

After work we're going to a new place by the river. (Ekavian Serbian)

Послије посла идемо у ново мјесто поред ријеке.

After work we're going to a new place by the river. (Ijekavian Serbian)

The grammar and meaning are the same. The second sentence has three Ijekavian reflexes: после → послије, место → мјесто, реке → ријеке. Neither version is intrinsically more traditional, rural, literary, or polite.

Political borders are poor word-by-word maps. Migration and family networks cross them, and the same city can contain speakers with different baselines. Describe distribution as a tendency and a personal standard choice, not as a test of nationality.

💡
Choose one variety for your own controlled production. Receptive competence should be broader: understand both without switching every time your interlocutor does.

The Main Correspondences

Ekavian usually has е where Ijekavian may have ије, је, и, or sometimes е. Historically long jat often gives е : ије; historically short jat often gives е : је. Modern spelling does not reveal the old length, so learn word families rather than applying a global replacement.

EkavianIjekavian SerbianMeaningPattern
млекомлијекоmilkе : ије
времевријемеtime; weatherе : ије

Деца су цело лето проводила код деде на селу.

The children spent the whole summer at their grandfather's in the countryside. (Ekavian Serbian)

Дјеца су цијело љето проводила код дједа на селу.

The children spent the whole summer at their grandfather's in the countryside. (Ijekavian Serbian)

Ijekavian ије is normally two syllables in words such as млијеко and вријеме. The је of мјесто or пјесма does not add the same extra syllable. Ordinary spelling does not mark pitch accent or vowel length; consult recordings or an accent dictionary for full prosody.

Word Families Change the Visible Reflex

One family can contain more than one outcome because historical quantity and sound environment changed across forms.

Немамо времена да прегледамо цео речник.

We don't have time to review the whole dictionary. (Ekavian Serbian)

Немамо времена да прегледамо цијели рјечник.

We don't have time to review the whole dictionary. (Ijekavian Serbian)

Notice that времена is identical in both while цео/цијели and речник/рјечник differ. A learner who blindly changes every е will create nonexistent forms.

Not Every е Participates

The vowel е remains е in both varieties when it does not continue the relevant historical vowel. Common examples include жена, сестра, петак, телефон, не. Loans are particularly resistant to imagined conversion.

Моја сестра телефоном заказује преглед за петак.

My sister is scheduling an appointment by phone for Friday. (the e vowels remain e in both varieties)

Standard Serbian also has нисам, ниси, није, нисмо, нисте, нису in both Ekavian and Ijekavian. Нијесам and related forms belong to Montenegrin standard and some regional speech; they are not the automatic Ijekavian version of Serbian нисам.

Нисам знао да ће представа почети раније.

I didn't know the performance would start earlier. (valid in both Ekavian and Ijekavian Serbian)

Variety Is Independent of Script and Standard Identity

Both Serbian varieties can be written in Cyrillic and Latin:

VarietyCyrillicLatin
Ekavian SerbianГде је следеће место?Gde je sledeće mesto?
Ijekavian SerbianГдје је сљедеће мјесто?Gdje je sljedeće mjesto?

Gdje možemo kupiti svježi hljeb?

Where can we buy fresh bread? (Ijekavian Serbian in standard Latin script)

Latin dj in gdje is d + j, not đ. The standard letter đ represents Serbian Cyrillic ђ and must not replace every дј sequence.

Ijekavian forms are also central to Bosnian, Croatian, and Montenegrin, but one Ijekavian word does not identify the language standard. Those standards have their own codified vocabulary, morphology, and orthographic preferences. Mutual intelligibility does not make their names interchangeable.

A Learner's Production Policy

Use this sequence:

  1. produce the Ekavian forms taught as this guide's baseline;
  2. record frequent Ijekavian partners as families, not isolated substitutions;
  3. listen for one reliable cue before classifying a speaker;
  4. keep a complete document internally consistent;
  5. preserve quotations, names, and titles in their original variety;
  6. if joining an Ijekavian-speaking family or institution, adopt that model systematically rather than word by word.

У извештају пишем екавски, али ијекавски наслов књиге остављам непромењен.

I write the report in Ekavian, but leave the book's Ijekavian title unchanged.

Recognition Task

Classify each sentence from its reflexes, then identify words that do not help:

Сљедеће недјеље провјерићемо вријеме за путовање.

Next week we'll check the weather for the trip. (Ijekavian Serbian; cues: сљедеће, недјеље, провјерићемо, вријеме)

Следеће недеље проверићемо време за путовање.

Next week we'll check the weather for the trip. (Ekavian Serbian; cues: следеће, недеље, проверићемо, време)

Words за and путовање occur unchanged and do not identify the variety. Recognition should rely on an actual correspondence, not on geography or script.

Common Mistakes

❌ Моја сјестра ради у тјелефонском центру.

Incorrect—сестра and телефон do not contain the historical vowel that produces Ijekavian је.

✅ Моја сестра ради у телефонском центру.

My sister works in a call center.

❌ Немам вријемена да завршим ријечник.

Incorrect Ijekavian word-family forms—the standard forms are времена and рјечник.

✅ Немам времена да завршим рјечник.

I don't have time to finish the dictionary. (Ijekavian Serbian)

❌ Ово мјесто је много лепше у пролеће.

Inconsistent controlled variety—мјесто is Ijekavian while лепше and пролеће are Ekavian.

✅ Ово мјесто је много љепше у прољеће.

This place is much nicer in spring. (consistent Ijekavian Serbian)

❌ Ијекавски српски је само разговорна верзија босанског или црногорског.

Incorrect—Ijekavian Serbian is a standard Serbian realization, while Bosnian and Montenegrin are separately codified standards.

✅ Ова редакција објављује књиге на ијекавском српском.

This publisher releases books in Ijekavian Serbian.

Practice

Task 1: convert a family, not individual letters

Convert Дете је видело лепу реч у речнику into consistent Ijekavian Serbian. Check дијете, видјело, лијепу, ријеч, рјечнику as lexical-family forms rather than choosing one replacement for every е.

Task 2: separate three dimensions

For Gdje je sljedeći voz?, identify (a) Ijekavian reflexes, (b) Latin script, and (c) what cannot be known from that sentence alone: the speaker's national identity or the exact codified standard intended.

Key Takeaways

  • Ekavian and Ijekavian are equal standard realizations within Serbian.
  • The main correspondences are е : ије/је, but families also contain и and unchanged е.
  • Geography predicts tendencies, not every individual's variety.
  • Script, reflex system, register, and language-standard identity are separate dimensions.
  • This guide teaches Ekavian for production and both varieties for recognition.
