Serbian in Bosnia and Herzegovina is commonly Ijekavian: млијеко, вријеме, дијете, мјесто, пјесма. It is standard Serbian, not an informal compromise between Serbian and Bosnian and not Ekavian Serbian with every е mechanically expanded. Its speakers participate in a multilingual society in which Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian labels and institutional norms coexist.
This page teaches a consistent Ijekavian Serbian model while acknowledging local variation. It does not use one word, accent, script, place of residence, or political boundary to assign anyone a language identity.
For the sound and syllable system behind the spellings, see Pronouncing Ekavian and Ijekavian Forms.
Standard Ijekavian Serbian
Serbian permits both Ekavian and Ijekavian standard forms. The visible correspondences reflect the historical vowel jat, whose older quantity and later sound environment produced several outcomes.
| Ekavian baseline | Ijekavian Serbian | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| млеко | млијеко | milk |
| време | вријеме | time; weather |
| дете | дијете | child |
| место | мјесто | place |
| песма | пјесма | song |
| следећи | сљедећи | next |
| где / овде | гдје / овдје | where / here |
Сљедеће седмице идемо у Бању Луку на сајам књиге.
Next week we're going to Banja Luka for the book fair. (Ijekavian Serbian)
Какво ће вријеме бити за викенд?
What will the weather be like this weekend? (Ijekavian Serbian)
Дијете је оставило биљежницу поред прозора.
The child left the notebook by the window. (Ijekavian Serbian)
Седмица and биљежница are common regional lexical choices, but they are not produced by the jat rule alone. Keep sound correspondences and vocabulary preferences analytically separate.
Learn families, not letter replacement
The same family can alternate among ије, је, и, and е. The nominative вријеме has ије, but its genitive времена does not. Likewise: ријеч — рјечник, дијете — дјетета — дјеца, лијеп — љепши, and видјети — видио.
Немамо времена да прије састанка провјеримо све одреднице у рјечнику.
We don't have time to check all the entries in the dictionary before the meeting. (Ijekavian Serbian)
Овај поглед је лијеп, али је онај с тврђаве још љепши.
This view is beautiful, but the one from the fortress is even more beautiful. (Ijekavian Serbian)
Јуче сам видио нову изложбу у градској галерији.
Yesterday I saw a new exhibition at the city gallery. (Ijekavian Serbian; male speaker)
Many е vowels remain е: жена, сестра, телефон, петак, не, времена. You cannot derive correct Ijekavian merely by searching an Ekavian text for the letter е.
Pronunciation without a single regional accent
In careful Ijekavian pronunciation, ије in млијеко, вријеме, дијете spans two syllables. The sequence је in мјесто, пјесма, дјеца belongs to one syllable with the preceding consonant. Do not insert an English-like neutral vowel between the consonant and ј.
Гдје сте купили хљеб и млијеко?
Where did you buy the bread and milk? (Ijekavian Serbian)
Ова пјесма ме увијек подсјети на љето поред ријеке.
This song always reminds me of summer by the river. (Ijekavian Serbian)
Bosnia and Herzegovina contains substantial regional, urban, rural, generational, and individual prosodic variation. Do not present one melody as “the Bosnian accent” or infer the standard from intonation alone. Ordinary spelling does not mark Serbian pitch accent or vowel length; this page therefore uses no specialist accent signs.
Shared vocabulary is not ownership evidence
Everyday words such as кафа, хљеб, седмица, комшија, општина, воз circulate in overlapping regional and standard patterns. Some are shared among Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, or Montenegrin; some vary within each. A form can be common in Bosnia and Herzegovina without belonging exclusively to the Bosnian standard.
Комшија нам је донио кафу прије него што су гости стигли.
The neighbor brought us coffee before the guests arrived. (Ijekavian Serbian)
У општини су ми рекли да ће рјешење бити готово у петак.
At the municipal office they told me the decision would be ready on Friday. (Ijekavian Serbian)
The second example uses Serbian општина and рјешење. In another institution, an official document may use vocabulary codified under Bosnian or Croatian. Preserve the document's terminology when citing it instead of silently converting its language label.
Cyrillic and Latin in context
Both scripts can write Ijekavian Serbian exactly. In Republika Srpska, the constitutional framework names Cyrillic and Latin as official scripts. Actual frequency still varies by institution, publication, municipality, medium, and individual. Across Bosnia and Herzegovina, a learner will encounter extensive Latin use as well as Cyrillic, especially in Serbian institutional and cultural contexts.
Сљедеће предавање почиње у дванаест часова.
The next lecture begins at twelve o'clock. (Ijekavian Serbian, Cyrillic)
Sljedeće predavanje počinje u dvanaest časova.
The next lecture begins at twelve o'clock. (the same Ijekavian Serbian sentence, Latin)
The script pair preserves сљ/slj, ћ/ć, ч/č, and every other segment. Latin is not a pronunciation guide, and Cyrillic is not evidence that a text is Ekavian.
Institution-dependent labels
Bosnia and Herzegovina's language names have legal, educational, cultural, and personal significance. A school subject, broadcaster, publisher, municipal form, or speaker may explicitly name српски, bosanski, or hrvatski. Use the supplied name. Shared grammar does not erase the institutional distinction, and geographical residence does not determine the label for an individual.
Код куће говоримо српски и најчешће пишемо ијекавски.
At home we speak Serbian and most often write in Ijekavian. (personal language label)
На обрасцу препишите назив установе тачно онако како је наведен.
On the form, copy the institution's name exactly as it is given. (formal instruction)
Practice
Task 1: recognition by families
Convert дете — детета — деца, реч — речник, and леп — лепши into standard Ijekavian Serbian. Explain why the result is not a uniform е → ије replacement.
Task 2: identify only supported facts
For a notice reading Sljedeće sedmice biblioteka radi kraće, identify script, Ijekavian cues, and vocabulary. List what the sentence does not reveal about the writer's ethnicity, citizenship, personal language label, or preferred script.
Common Mistakes
Treating every е as historical jat
❌ Моја сјестра ради у тјелефонској служби у пјетак.
Incorrect — сестра, телефон, and петак retain е in standard Ijekavian Serbian.
✅ Моја сестра ради у телефонској служби у петак.
My sister works in telephone support on Friday. (valid in Ijekavian Serbian)
Mixing Ekavian and Ijekavian unintentionally
❌ Сљедеће недеље биће лепо време.
Inconsistent controlled model — сљедеће is Ijekavian, while недеље, лепо, and време are Ekavian.
✅ Сљедеће седмице биће лијепо вријеме.
Next week the weather will be nice. (consistent Ijekavian Serbian)
Assigning a language from one form
❌ Ако неко каже „гдје“, сигурно говори босански.
Incorrect — гдје occurs in Ijekavian Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, and Montenegrin.
✅ Облик „гдје“ показује ијекавски рефлекс, али не одређује сам назив језика.
The form ‘gdje’ shows an Ijekavian reflex but does not by itself determine the language name.
Equating script with standard
❌ Текст на латиници не може бити српски у Републици Српској.
Incorrect — Latin can represent standard Serbian, and both scripts have official status in Republika Srpska.
✅ Ово обавјештење је на српском језику и написано је латиницом.
This notice is in Serbian and is written in Latin script. (Ijekavian Serbian)
