Usar (To Use) — Full Conjugation

Usar is one of the first workhorse verbs a learner of Portuguese picks up, and it earns its keep: it covers to use (a tool, a method, a language, a word) and to wear (clothing, glasses, accessories). It is a completely regular first-conjugation (-ar) verb in every tense, which makes it a reliable template for the whole class. The only quirk worth memorising in advance is the "hat" accent on usámos in the preterite (we used), which distinguishes it from the present usamos (we use) in European Portuguese spelling.

This page gives you every conjugated form of usar, tense by tense, plus the usage patterns — usar roupa, usar óculos, usar + infinitivo with costumar-style meanings — that learners most often need to pin down.

💡
In Portugal, the preterite nós form of -ar verbs keeps the acute accent in writing: usámos (we used) vs usamos (we use). Brazilian Portuguese dropped this distinction after the 1990 Orthographic Agreement, but European Portuguese preserves it. Getting the accent right on your written 1pl preterites is a small thing that immediately signals you are writing in the European norm.

Usage patterns

Usar is transitive — it always takes a direct object (a thing you use, a garment you wear). There is no preposition between the verb and the object.

1. Usar + direct object (use a tool, method, language):

Para este trabalho, uso sempre a broca pequena.

For this job, I always use the small drill bit.

Não uso o inglês em casa, só com colegas estrangeiros.

I don't use English at home, only with foreign colleagues.

2. Usar roupa / usar óculos (wear clothes, glasses, accessories):

This is the everyday verb for wearing something habitually or at a given moment. Distinct from vestir (to put on, to dress oneself) and pôr (to put on — quick action), which focus on the action. Usar focuses on the state of having it on.

Ele usa óculos desde os dez anos.

He's worn glasses since he was ten.

Aqui dentro do laboratório é obrigatório usar bata branca.

Inside the lab you have to wear a white coat.

3. Usar por engano / usar sem querer (use by mistake):

Desculpa, acho que usei o teu carregador sem querer.

Sorry, I think I used your charger by mistake.

4. Usar + a palavra / a expressão (use a word, an expression):

Em Portugal, normalmente não usamos a palavra 'ônibus' — dizemos 'autocarro'.

In Portugal, we don't usually use the word 'ônibus' — we say 'autocarro'.

Example sentences in context

Posso usar a tua casa de banho?

Can I use your bathroom?

Use o cartão no terminal e digite o código.

Use the card in the terminal and enter the code. (formal instruction)

Ontem usámos o carro do meu irmão para levar o frigorífico.

Yesterday we used my brother's car to move the fridge.

A minha avó usava sempre um lenço na cabeça quando ia à igreja.

My grandmother always used to wear a headscarf when she went to church.

Se usares a chave errada, podes partir a fechadura.

If you use the wrong key, you could break the lock.

Não uses essa camisola para sair — está toda amarrotada.

Don't wear that sweater out — it's all creased.

Tenho usado muito o comboio para ir para o trabalho.

I've been using the train a lot to get to work.

Esta aplicação é fácil de usar, mesmo para quem não percebe nada de tecnologia.

This app is easy to use, even for people who know nothing about technology.

Usar vs utilizar

Usar and utilizar are near-synonyms meaning to use. The distinction is register, not meaning:

  • usar (neutral, colloquial) — the everyday verb. Appropriate in every register.
  • utilizar (formal, academic, technical) — slightly more formal, common in instructions, manuals, academic writing, and bureaucratic contexts.

In spoken Portuguese, usar dominates by a huge margin. You will read utilizar in: instruction manuals (utilize apenas pilhas alcalinas), academic papers (os investigadores utilizaram um método inovador), and signs (utilize o corrimão). In conversation, swapping utilizar for usar sounds stiff.

Usar is also the only option for to wear. You cannot say utilizar óculos to mean "to wear glasses" — it would suggest that you are using the glasses as a tool for some purpose, not wearing them.

Posso usar a tua caneta?

Can I use your pen? (natural, everyday)

A empresa utiliza um sistema de gestão integrado.

The company uses an integrated management system. (formal/technical)

Common mistakes

❌ Nós usamos o carro ontem.

Incorrect for European Portuguese — the preterite 1pl needs an acute accent in writing to distinguish it from the present.

✅ Nós usámos o carro ontem.

We used the car yesterday.

❌ Utilizo óculos desde pequeno.

Marked — *utilizar* is correct grammatically, but it sounds oddly formal for everyday clothing or accessories. Native speakers say *usar*.

✅ Uso óculos desde pequeno.

I've worn glasses since I was little.

❌ Não uses a janela!

Odd phrasing — usar doesn't naturally describe opening or operating a window. Portuguese would pick a more specific verb.

✅ Não abras a janela!

Don't open the window!

❌ Usei de o telefone do meu pai.

Incorrect — *usar* takes a direct object, no preposition *de* between the verb and the thing used.

✅ Usei o telefone do meu pai.

I used my father's phone.

❌ Eu usaria óculos se tivesse problemas de visão.

This sentence is fine, but learners often say usaria when the natural verb in EP is simply usava — in colloquial conditional-with-se, EP speakers commonly use the imperfect indicative instead of the conditional.

✅ Eu usava óculos se tivesse problemas de visão.

I would wear glasses if I had vision problems.

Key takeaways

  • Usar is a fully regular -ar verb. No stem changes, no spelling tricks.
  • Write usámos (with acute accent) for the preterite nós form in European Portuguese. Without the accent, it reads as the present.
  • Usar means both to use and to wear (clothes, glasses, accessories). For wearing, it is the default neutral verb; compare vestir (put on / dress) and pôr (put on — quick action).
  • Usar and utilizar are synonyms in the "use" sense; usar is colloquial, utilizar is formal. For clothing, only usar works.
  • Usar is transitive — no preposition between the verb and the object.
