Estudar

Estudar means "to study." It is completely regular across every tense and mood — no stem changes, no spelling tricks, no irregular endings — which makes it an ideal model for the entire -ar verb class. If you can conjugate estudar, you can conjugate the thousands of regular -ar verbs that follow the same pattern (trabalhar, falar, morar, gostar, and so on). Learn this paradigm well and you have learned a huge slice of the language at once.

Meanings and uses

  • to study (for an exam, a subject): the core meaning — Preciso estudar para a prova (I need to study for the test).
  • to study a field / major in: Estudo medicina (I'm studying medicine / I major in medicine) — used with a bare subject, no preposition.
  • estudar para
    • exam/goal: study for something — estudar para o vestibular (study for the college entrance exam).
  • estudar em
    • institution: to study at a school — Estudo na federal (I study at the federal university).
💡
English "study medicine" maps directly: Portuguese says estudar medicina with no article and no preposition. But "study for a test" needs para: estudar para a prova. Keep the two patterns separate — the field is a direct object, the goal you study toward takes para.

💡
In casual BR speech the command for você is usually the bare present-indicative form (Estuda!), even though the prescribed written imperative is the subjunctive form (Estude!). Both are common; the bare one sounds more conversational.

"Study" vs "learn"

A common source of confusion for English speakers is the line between estudar (to study) and aprender (to learn). Estudar is the activity — sitting down with the material, putting in the effort. Aprender is the result — the knowledge entering your head. You can estudar for hours and still not aprender anything. Keep them apart:

Estudei a vida toda, mas só aprendi de verdade trabalhando.

I studied my whole life, but I only really learned by working.

Ela estuda piano desde os cinco anos.

She's been studying piano since she was five.

Common Mistakes

❌ Eu estudo para medicina.

Incorrect — the field of study is a direct object: 'estudo medicina', no 'para'.

✅ Eu estudo medicina.

I'm studying medicine.

❌ Eu estudo a prova amanhã.

Unnatural — you study FOR a test: 'estudar para a prova'.

✅ Eu estudo para a prova amanhã.

I'm studying for the test tomorrow.

❌ Quero que você estuda mais.

Incorrect — after 'quero que' you need the subjunctive: estude.

✅ Quero que você estude mais.

I want you to study more.

❌ Quando eu estudar o suficiente, eu aprendo.

Acceptable but watch the verb choice — 'estudar' is the effort, 'aprender' is the result; don't swap them.

✅ Eu estudo bastante, mas demoro pra aprender.

I study a lot, but I'm slow to learn.

Key Takeaways

  • Estudar is a fully regular -ar verb — the cleanest possible model for the whole -ar class.
  • The field you study is a direct object (estudar medicina); the goal you study toward takes para (estudar para a prova).
  • The nós form estudamos is identical in present and preterite; context disambiguates.
  • Don't confuse estudar (the activity) with aprender (the result).
