Explicar

Explicar means "to explain." It conjugates like a regular -ar verb in sound, but its spelling has one twist: the c becomes qu wherever the ending starts with e. That gives you eu expliquei in the preterite and the whole present subjunctive in explique. This is the mirror image of the esquecer rule — there, c → ç protected a soft sound before a/o; here, c → qu protects the hard "k" sound before e. Beyond conjugation, the verb has a fixed pattern for who you explain something to, which English speakers regularly get wrong.

Why the qu?

The letter c before e or i is pronounced soft, like English "s" (cidade, cento). But explicar is pronounced with a hard "k" — ex-pli-KAR. To keep that hard "k" sound when an ending starting with e is attached, the spelling switches c → qu: expliquei, explique, expliquem. Without the change, "explicei" would be read with a soft "s" sound, which is wrong. This is a pure spelling adjustment; the verb is otherwise regular.

💡
The rule: c → qu before e, to keep the hard "k". Every -car verb does this — ficar (fiquei), tocar (toquei), pegar is -gar so it's g→gu (peguei). The pattern shows up in exactly two places: the eu form of the preterite (expliquei) and the entire present subjunctive (explique…).

Meanings and uses

  • to explain (something): Deixa eu explicar (Let me explain).
  • explicar algo para/a alguém: to explain something to someone — the indirect object takes para (spoken/neutral) or a (more formal).
  • explicar que / como / por que: to explain that / how / whyEle explicou que nãode vir (He explained that he couldn't come).
  • explicar-se (reflexive): to explain oneself / justify oneself — Você tem que se explicar (You have to explain yourself).
💡
English lets you say "explain me this," but Portuguese does not drop the preposition. The thing explained is the direct object; the person is introduced with para (or a): explicar isso para mim, never "explicar me isso" in that order. This is the single most common transfer error with this verb.

"Explain something to someone": the para pattern

This is where English speakers stumble. In English you can say "explain me the rules" or "explain it to me." Portuguese only allows the second structure: the thing explained is the direct object, and the person comes after the preposition para (everyday) or a (more formal/written). The person can also appear as a clitic pronoun (me, te, lhe) before the verb in BR.

Você pode explicar as regras para mim?

Can you explain the rules to me?

O guia explicou a história do prédio aos turistas.

The guide explained the building's history to the tourists. (formal: aos = a + os)

Me explica essa conta, por favor.

Explain this bill to me, please. (informal clitic me)

Common Mistakes

❌ Eu explicei tudo ontem.

Incorrect — the eu-preterite needs qu: expliquei, not 'explicei'.

✅ Eu expliquei tudo ontem.

I explained everything yesterday.

❌ Quero que você explica isso.

Incorrect — after 'quero que' use the subjunctive: explique.

✅ Quero que você explique isso.

I want you to explain this.

❌ Ele explicou eu o problema.

Incorrect — you can't put the person as a bare object after the verb; use 'para mim' or the clitic 'me'.

✅ Ele me explicou o problema.

He explained the problem to me.

❌ Espero que ele explice melhor da próxima vez.

Incorrect — with hard-c verbs the present subjunctive takes qu: explique, never 'explice.'

✅ Espero que ele explique melhor da próxima vez.

I hope he explains better next time.

Key Takeaways

  • Explicar is a regular -ar verb except for the c → qu spelling change before e: expliquei (preterite eu) and the entire present subjunctive explique / expliquemos / expliquem.
  • The change protects the hard "k" sound; it is the mirror of esquecer's c → ç.
  • You explain something to someone with para (everyday) or a (formal) — never a bare object person after the verb.
  • A clitic pronoun (me, te, lhe) before the verb is the common spoken way to mark the listener: Me explica isso.
