B2 Path: Formal Public Persian

This path develops control of Persian used in public notices, reports, interviews, institutional correspondence, and accessible academic prose. It introduces no construction. Each stage sequences specialist pages already in the guide and ends in a concrete editing or production task. Complete B1 Narrative and Clause Building first: formal density cannot repair uncertain tense, reference, or clause boundaries.

Formal here does not mean “longest possible.” Public Persian must make sources, agency, probability, and responsibility recoverable. A short active clause may be more professional than a chain of Arabic nominalizations; a passive may be right when procedure matters more than actor. The goal is functional choice, not ornamental elevation.

Stage ۱: Attribute claims before increasing density

Begin with the B2 Original News Report Pastiche for recognition, then focus on Evidentiality and Responsibility. A public sentence should distinguish the writer’s observation, another source’s claim, an inference, and an unverified report. Reporting verbs and source phrases carry ethical information; passive grammar alone does not supply it.

به گفته‌ی مسئول ایستگاه، حرکت قطارها از ساعت شش از سر گرفته می‌شود.

be gofte-ye mas'ul-e istgâh, harekat-e qetâr-hâ az sâ'at-e shesh az sar gerefte mi-shavad.

According to the station official, train service will resume at six. (formal public report)

بررسی اولیه نشان می‌دهد که قطعی برق کوتاه بوده است.

barrasi-ye avvaliyye neshân mi-dahad ke qat'i-ye barq kutâh bude ast.

The preliminary review indicates that the power outage was brief. (formal; qualified inference)

هنوز منبع مستقلی این ادعا را تأیید نکرده است.

hanuz manba'-e mostaqelli in edde'â râ ta'yid nakarde ast.

No independent source has yet confirmed this claim. (formal journalistic caution)

Production goal: report one confirmed fact, one attributed claim, and one inference. Underline the expression that establishes each evidence status. Review loop: remove the source phrase and identify how the writer’s responsibility changes.

💡
Formality does not license invisible sources. If a reader could mistake a report for your assertion, add attribution before adding more nominal syntax.

Stage ۲: Use nominalization to package an event, not hide it

Study Formal Nominalization plus Light Verb and Nominalization instead of Subordination. Event nouns help a writer refer back to a process, coordinate policies, or fit a heading. They can also obscure actor and tense. Compare a finite clause whenever a nominal chain becomes hard to parse.

دانشگاه زمان ثبت‌نام را تمدید کرد.

dâneshgâh zamân-e sabt-nâm râ tamdid kard.

The university extended the registration period. (clear formal active clause)

تمدید زمان ثبت‌نام پس از بررسی درخواست‌ها انجام گرفت.

tamdid-e zamân-e sabt-nâm pas az barrasi-ye darkhâst-hâ anjâm gereft.

The registration-period extension took place after the requests were reviewed. (formal, event-centered)

برای روشن شدن مسئولیت، جمله‌ی دوم را با فاعل صریح بازنویسی کردیم.

barâ-ye rowshan shodan-e mas'uliyyat, jomle-ye dovvom râ bâ fâ'el-e sarih bâz-nevisi kardim.

To clarify responsibility, we rewrote the second sentence with an explicit subject. (academic editing)

Production goal: convert two finite clauses into event-noun structures, then convert one back. Keep the nominal version only if reference or genre improves.

Stage ۳: Calibrate modality and recommendation

Use Stacked Irrealis and Modal Scope for analysis and Verb Choice in Academic Argument for production. Public prose must distinguish باید as obligation from epistemic inference, ممکن است as possibility, and بهتر است as recommendation. Their complements and negation determine scope.

ممکن است اجرای طرح تا پایان ماه به تعویق بیفتد.

momken ast ejrâ-ye tarh tâ pâyân-e mâh be ta'viq bioftad.

Implementation of the plan may be postponed until the end of the month. (formal possibility)

برای حفظ ایمنی، کارکنان باید پیش از ورود ثبت‌نام کنند.

barâ-ye hefz-e imeni, kârkonân bâyad pish az vorud sabt-nâm konand.

For safety, staff must register before entering. (formal obligation)

با توجه به خاموش بودن چراغ‌ها، جلسه باید تمام شده باشد.

bâ tavajjoh be khâmush budan-e cherâgh-hâ, jalase bâyad tamâm shode bâshad.

Given that the lights are off, the meeting must have ended. (formal inference, not obligation)

Production goal: write a recommendation containing evidence, one possibility, and one required action. Label the scope of every negation and modal before editing style.

Stage ۴: Choose an agent strategy deliberately

Compare Agentless Constructions across Registers, Passive, Anticausative, and Result Ambiguity, and Active, Passive, or Generic Third Plural?. Public prose often foregrounds affected entities, but suppressing a relevant actor can mislead.

گروه فنی سامانه را ساعت ده راه‌اندازی کرد.

goruh-e fanni sâmâne râ sâ'at-e dah râh-andâzi kard.

The technical team launched the system at ten. (formal active; actor relevant)

سامانه پس از دو ساعت دوباره راه‌اندازی شد.

sâmâne pas az do sâ'at do-bâre râh-andâzi shod.

The system was restarted after two hours. (formal passive; event-centered)

در این مرکز درخواست‌ها را به ترتیب تاریخ بررسی می‌کنند.

dar in markaz darkhâst-hâ râ be tartib-e târikh barrasi mi-konand.

At this center, applications are reviewed in date order. (generic third plural; routine human procedure)

Production goal: create three versions of a procedural update and justify which participant occupies subject position.

Stage ۵: Keep honorific direction consistent

Study Honorific and Humble Predicates with Honorific Light-Verb Substitution. تشریف آوردن elevates the referent; عرض کردن lowers the speaker’s contribution relative to the addressee. These are socially directed lexical choices, not interchangeable formal synonyms.

اگر تشریف بیاورید، همکاران بخش پذیرش راهنمایی‌تان می‌کنند.

agar tashrif biyâvarid, hamkârân-e bakhsh-e pazirosh râhnamâyi-tân mi-konand.

If you come, the reception staff will assist you. (honorific formal address)

نتیجه‌ی بررسی را تا فردا به حضورتان عرض می‌کنم.

natije-ye barrasi râ tâ fardâ be hozur-etân arz mi-konam.

I will report the review outcome to you by tomorrow. (humble-formal)

Production goal: draft a four-line institutional exchange containing greeting, request, acknowledgment, and deadline. Verify who is honored by each marked predicate.

Stage ۶: Read public texts by genre

Read Public-Domain Constitutional Prose and compare it with a contemporary public notice or report. Legal coordination, article numbering, and obligation formulas are genre conventions; do not import their density into every email. Annotate source, finite verbs, nominal heads, agent strategy, and modal force before paraphrasing.

این بند حق را تعریف می‌کند و بند بعدی حدود آن را توضیح می‌دهد.

in band haqq râ ta'rif mi-konad va band-e ba'di hodud-e ân râ towzih mi-dahad.

This clause defines the right, and the next clause explains its limits. (formal legal-text analysis)

در بازنویسی عمومی، اصطلاح حقوقی را نگه داشتیم و جمله را کوتاه کردیم.

dar bâz-nevisi-ye omumi, estelâh-e hoquqi râ negah dâshtim va jomle râ kutâh kardim.

In the public-facing rewrite, we kept the legal term and shortened the sentence. (formal editing)

Common Mistakes

Treating nominal density as automatic sophistication

⚠️ بررسی امکان اجرای برنامه پس از انجام هماهنگی‌های لازم صورت پذیرفت.

barrasi-ye emkân-e ejrâ-ye barnâme pas az anjâm-e hamâhangi-hâ-ye lâzem surat paziroft.

The feasibility review was conducted after the necessary coordination was carried out. (grammatical bureaucratic overload)

✅ گروه برنامه‌ریزی امکان اجرای طرح را بررسی کرد.

goruh-e barnâme-rizi emkân-e ejrâ-ye tarh râ barrasi kard.

The planning group examined whether the plan could be implemented.

Using passive to conceal a relevant decision-maker

⚠️ درخواست رد شد و توضیحی ارائه نشد.

darkhâst radd shod va towzihi erâ'e nashod.

The application was rejected and no explanation was provided. (grammatical, but potentially evasive when agency matters)

✅ کمیته درخواست را رد کرد و دلیل تصمیم را اعلام نکرد.

komite darkhâst râ radd kard va dalil-e tasmim râ e'lâm nakard.

The committee rejected the application and did not state the reason for its decision.

Confusing epistemic and obligatory باید

⚠️ او باید رسیده باشد، یعنی موظف است برسد.

u bâyad reside bâshad, ya'ni movazzaf ast beresad.

He must have arrived, meaning he is obliged to arrive. (grammatical explanation, wrong modal analysis)

✅ او باید رسیده باشد، یعنی شواهد چنین نتیجه‌ای می‌دهد.

u bâyad reside bâshad, ya'ni shavâhed chonin natije-i mi-dahad.

He must have arrived, meaning the evidence supports that conclusion.

Directing an honorific toward oneself

⚠️ من فردا برای جلسه تشریف می‌آورم.

man fardâ barâ-ye jalase tashrif mi-âvaram.

Grammatical but self-elevating in neutral use: تشریف آوردن honorifies its subject.

✅ من فردا خدمت شما می‌رسم.

man fardâ khedmat-e shomâ mi-resam.

I will come to see you tomorrow. (polite/humble)

Diagnostic exit task

Write a ۱۵۰-word public update about a delayed service. Include an attributed statement, a qualified inference, one necessary action, one event noun used for reference, and two different agent strategies. Add a two-line honorific response to a member of the public. Then make a plain-language edit that shortens at least two sentences without deleting source or responsibility.

Pass when a reader can identify who knows what, who decided what, how certain each claim is, and what action is required. If the prose sounds elevated but those answers are missing, repeat the relevant stage.

Key Takeaways

Formal public Persian coordinates evidence, agency, modality, and social direction. Choose density only when it packages information more clearly; otherwise prefer the finite clause that names the actor and action.
