Stacked Irrealis and Modal Scope

Persian can place several nonfactual layers around one event: ممکن است نرفته باشد “it is possible that he or she has not gone,” نباید رفته باشد “he or she presumably has not gone,” and اگر لازم بود زودتر رفته باشد... “if it was necessary that he or she have left earlier....” The individual forms may be familiar; the B2 problem is scope—which operator applies to which proposition.

English marks many of these layers with chains of auxiliary verbs: might not have left, should not have left. Persian distributes them across matrix predicates, invariant modals, negation on different verbs, the perfect subjunctive, and conditional clauses. Word order gives strong clues, but context and paraphrase are sometimes indispensable. There is no honest one-word gloss for every stack.

Read the structure from the outside in

LayerFrequent formQuestion it answers
conditionاگر ...under what hypothetical assumption?
possibility or necessityممکن است / باید / لازم استhow possible or required is the proposition?
negationنیست / نـ / نمی‌which layer is denied?
anteriorityرفته باشدdid the embedded event precede the modal viewpoint?
eventرفتن، پذیرفتن، فرستادنwhat situation is being evaluated?

Start with the lexical event, then add its perfect or negative marking, then ask what the matrix expression does to the resulting proposition.

ممکن است آرش نامه را دریافت نکرده باشد.

momken ast ârash nâme râ daryâft na-karde bâshad.

Arash may not have received the letter. (neutral standard; possibility has scope over a negated anterior event)

ممکن نیست آرش تا دیروز نامه را دریافت کرده باشد.

momken nist ârash tâ diruz nâme râ daryâft karde bâshad.

It is not possible that Arash had received the letter by yesterday. (neutral/formal; negation has scope over possibility)

The contrast is logical, not stylistic. The first leaves two live possibilities—receipt and nonreceipt—and says nonreceipt is possible. The second rules receipt out. English may not is famously ambiguous between these readings; Persian can keep them apart by choosing ممکن است ... نکرده باشد versus ممکن نیست ... کرده باشد.

💡
Locate نـ before translating. Negation on the lexical participle denies the event; نیست on a matrix possibility predicate denies the possibility of the entire embedded proposition.

Perfect subjunctive adds time, not modal force by itself

The perfect subjunctive رفته باشد says that “going” is earlier than the relevant viewpoint and is not directly asserted in that clause. It does not itself mean maybe, must, or should. The licensing expression supplies that force; Perfect Subjunctive gives the full formation and agreement paradigm.

شاید مدیر پیش از شروع جلسه رفته باشد.

shâyad modir pish az shoru'-e jalase rafte bâshad.

Perhaps the director left before the meeting began. (neutral; weak possibility about an earlier event)

با توجه به خاموشی چراغ‌ها، مدیر باید پیش از ما رفته باشد.

bâ tavajjoh be khâmushi-ye cherâgh-hâ, modir bâyad pish az mâ rafte bâshad.

Given that the lights are off, the director must have left before us. (formal-neutral; strong inference about an anterior event)

طبق مقررات، مدیر باید پیش از ساعت شش ساختمان را ترک کند.

tebq-e moqarrarât, modir bâyad pish az sâ'at-e shesh sâkhtemân râ tark konad.

Under the regulations, the director must leave the building before six. (formal; deontic obligation, not inference)

The second and third sentences both contain invariant باید, but evidence phrases such as با توجه به... favor epistemic “must,” while rules and agents favor deontic “must.” A bare perfect subjunctive strongly favors the inference reading because it evaluates an event that may already have happened. A genuinely deontic perfect is much narrower: it normally needs a current or future rule requiring a resultant state to hold by a deadline.

Why نباید is genuinely difficult

نباید combines negation with باید, and its interpretation depends on both context and the form of its complement. In regulations, present subjunctive نباید وارد شوید means “you must not enter.” With a bare perfect subjunctive and evidence, نباید رفته باشد normally expresses a negative inference, “he or she presumably has not gone.” To judge a completed past violation, neutral Iranian Persian ordinarily uses past imperfective نباید می‌رفت “he or she should not have gone,” not the bare perfect-subjunctive stack.

طبق دستور ایمنی، کارکنان نباید پیش از پایان بازرسی این در را باز کنند.

tebq-e dastur-e imeni, kârkonân na-bâyad pish az pâyân-e bâzrasi in dar râ bâz konand.

Under the safety instructions, employees must not open this door before the inspection is complete. (formal; ordinary deontic prohibition with present subjunctive)

کلید هنوز روی میز است؛ نگهبان نباید در را باز کرده باشد.

kelid hanuz ru-ye miz ast; negahbân na-bâyad dar râ bâz karde bâshad.

The key is still on the desk; the guard presumably cannot have opened the door. (neutral; evidence-based negative inference)

The modal itself is polysemous, but the tense–aspect–mood form biases the result: the first example is an ordinary prohibition, while the second is an inference about a prior event. Where even a residual ambiguity would matter, good Persian adds an explicit frame:

  • اجازه نداشته است که... “was not permitted to...” for prohibition;
  • از شواهد چنین برمی‌آید که... نکرده است “the evidence suggests that ... did not...” for inference.

نگهبان اجازه نداشته است پیش از حضور مسئول در را باز کند.

negahbân ejâze na-dâshte ast pish az hozur-e mas'ul dar râ bâz konad.

The guard was not permitted to open the door before the supervisor was present. (formal; unambiguous deontic paraphrase)

Conditionals add an outer hypothetical layer

In اگر clauses, mood and tense describe the status of the embedded event, while the whole condition places it inside a larger hypothetical space. Compare an open completed possibility with a contrary-to-fact past.

اگر آزمایش را تکرار کرده باشند، نتیجه باید در پرونده ثبت شده باشد.

agar âzmâyesh râ tekrâr karde bâshand, natije bâyad dar parvande sabt shode bâshad.

If they have repeated the experiment, the result must have been entered in the file. (formal; open condition plus inference about its consequence)

اگر آزمایش را تکرار کرده بودند، اکنون می‌توانستیم خطا را تشخیص بدهیم.

agar âzmâyesh râ tekrâr karde budand, aknun mi-tavânestim khatâ râ tashkhis be-dahim.

If they had repeated the experiment, we could identify the error now. (formal-neutral; unreal past condition with present consequence)

The first does not tell us whether the repetition occurred; کرده باشند keeps completion open. The second normally implies that it did not occur; past perfect کرده بودند plus the modal result creates a counterfactual reading. Persian does not insert an English-style would into every result. Each layer retains its own form and time relation.

Four paraphrase tests

When a stack feels opaque, replace one compact operator with a fuller expression. The paraphrase may be stylistically heavier, but it reveals scope.

Compact formDiagnostic paraphraseReading isolated
ممکن است Pاین امکان وجود دارد که Ppossibility of P
ممکن نیست Pامکان ندارد که Pimpossibility of P
باید Pلازم است Pobligation
باید Pاز شواهد برمی‌آید که Pinference

این احتمال وجود دارد که بخشی از داده‌ها حذف شده باشد، اما دلیلی برای حذف عمدی آن‌ها نداریم.

in ehtemâl vojud dârad ke bakhshi az dâde-hâ hazf shode bâshad, ammâ dalili barâ-ye hazf-e amdi-ye ân-hâ na-dârim.

It is possible that some of the data has been deleted, but we have no reason to think the deletion was intentional. (academic; expanded possibility paraphrase limits the claim)

This test also protects academic writers from overstating conclusions. A modal stack is not decorative sophistication: changing the outer operator changes the commitment of the whole sentence.

💡
If two readings matter legally, scientifically, or practically, do not trust نباید plus context alone. Expand either prohibition or inference into an explicit predicate.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating event negation as impossibility

❌ ممکن است نرسیده باشد یعنی رسیدنش غیرممکن است.

Incorrect — ممکن است نرسیده باشد says nonarrival is possible; it does not say arrival is impossible.

✅ ممکن نیست قطار پیش از بسته‌شدن خط رسیده باشد.

momken nist qatâr pish az baste-shodan-e khat reside bâshad.

It is not possible that the train arrived before the line closed.

2. Giving the perfect subjunctive a fixed may-have meaning

❌ رفته باشد همیشه یعنی شاید رفته است.

Incorrect — the perfect subjunctive marks anterior nonassertion; its licensing predicate supplies possibility, inference, desire, or another force.

✅ بعید است گروه بدون هماهنگی حرکت کرده باشد.

ba'id ast goruh bedun-e hamâhangi harekat karde bâshad.

It is unlikely that the group set out without coordination.

3. Using the indicative perfect after نباید

❌ پیمانکار نباید گزارش را تغییر داده است.

Incorrect — anteriority under modal نباید requires داده باشد, while a completed past prohibition is normally phrased with past imperfective or explicit permission language.

✅ طبق قرارداد، پیمانکار مجاز نبوده است متن گزارش را تغییر دهد.

tebq-e qarârdâd, peymânkâr mojâz na-bude ast matn-e gozâresh râ taghyir dahad.

Under the contract, the contractor was not authorized to alter the report. (unambiguous prohibition)

4. Copying English counterfactual auxiliaries

❌ اگر آمده بودند، خواهند توانست مشکل را حل کنند.

Incorrect for an unreal past condition with a present result — future خواهند توانست does not reproduce English would.

✅ اگر کارشناسان دیروز آمده بودند، اکنون می‌توانستند منشأ خطا را پیدا کنند.

agar kârshenâsân diruz âmade budand, aknun mi-tavânestand mansha'-e khatâ râ peydâ konand.

If the experts had come yesterday, they could now identify the source of the error.

Key Takeaways

  • Scope is hierarchical: condition can contain modality, modality can contain negation, and perfect subjunctive locates the embedded event earlier.
  • ممکن است P نباشد differs from ممکن نیست P باشد; Persian word placement makes this contrast visible.
  • رفته باشد supplies anterior nonassertion, not one fixed English modal translation.
  • Bare نباید + perfect subjunctive normally favors epistemic inference; use past imperfective or explicit permission language to judge a completed violation.
  • Diagnose dense stacks by expanding ممکن است، باید، نباید one layer at a time.
