The Persian present subjunctive normally combines بـ + present stem + personal ending: بروم “that I go,” بخوانی “that you read,” بنویسند “that they write.” It presents an event not as an asserted fact or habit, but as desired, required, possible, intended, or otherwise dependent on another expression.
English often hides this dependency inside an infinitive: “I want to go.” Persian makes the embedded subject finite: میخواهم بروم, literally “I want that-I-go.” This page builds the form; later pages explain individual licensing expressions in depth.
The regular six-person pattern
For simple رفتن, use present stem رو, not past stem رفت:
| Person | Structure | Form | Possible translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | بـ + رو + م | بروم | that I go |
| you (singular) | بـ + رو + ی | بروی | that you go |
| he/she/it | بـ + رو + د | برود | that he/she go |
| we | بـ + رو + یم | برویم | that we go |
| you (plural/polite) | بـ + رو + ید | بروید | that you go |
| they | بـ + رو + ند | بروند | that they go |
باید پیش از ساعت پنج بروم.
bâyad pish az sâ'at-e panj beravam.
I have to leave before five. (neutral standard; obligation licenses the subjunctive)
شاید امشب پاسخ را بنویسند.
shâyad emshab pâsokh râ be-nevisand.
They may write the reply tonight. (neutral standard; possibility)
بهتر است کمی استراحت کنی.
behtar ast kami esterâhat koni.
It is better for you to rest a little. (neutral advice; compound کردن normally omits بـ)
The endings are the ordinary present-system endings. Unlike the singular imperative, which can be bare برو, second-person singular subjunctive has ـی: بروی.
The shape of بـ before consonants and vowels
Before most consonant-initial present stems, the prefix is written directly against the stem and pronounced be- or bo- according to established phonology: بخوانم، بخورم، بگویم، بروم. There is no ZWNJ between prefix and stem.
Vowel-initial stems trigger visible allomorphy. The sequence is not written as a free-standing ب plus the dictionary stem:
| Infinitive | Present stem | First singular subjunctive | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| آمدن | آی | بیایم | that I come |
| آوردن | آور | بیاورم | that I bring |
| افتادن | افت | بیفتم | that I fall |
| انداختن | انداز | بیندازم | that I throw/put |
ممکن است فردا دیرتر بیایم.
momken ast fardâ dir-tar biyâyam.
I may come later tomorrow. (neutral standard)
لازم است اصل مدرک را هم بیاورید.
lâzem ast asl-e madrak râ ham biyâvarid.
You need to bring the original document too. (formal-neutral instruction; polite/plural)
There is no safe spelling shortcut that covers every vowel-initial stem. Learn frequent forms such as بیایم، بیاورم، بیفتم as the regular surface realizations of known present stems.
Lexical preverbs occupy the prefix position
Verbs such as برگشتن “return” and برداشتن “pick up” already contain a preverb برـ. Their neutral subjunctives are برگردم and بردارم, not forms with an extra initial بـ. The lexical preverb stays closest to its stem.
اجازه بده زودتر برگردم.
ejâze bede zud-tar bar-gardam.
Let me come back earlier. (careful spoken standard; برگشتن keeps its preverb)
میشود این صندلی را برداریم؟
mi-shavad in sandali râ bar-dârim?
May we take this chair? (careful spoken standard; برداشتن)
Calling every initial ب “the subjunctive prefix” would therefore be misleading. In برگردم, برـ is part of the lexical verb; in بروم, بـ marks the subjunctive on stem رو.
Compound predicates and omission with کردن
In a compound predicate, subjunctive marking belongs to the light verb, never to the noun or adjective: تصمیم بگیرم، تلفن بزنید، آماده بشوند. With کردن, however, neutral modern Persian commonly omits affirmative بـ: کار کنم، بررسی کنید، صحبت کنیم. بکنم remains possible when کردن is used independently or receives emphasis, but mechanically adding it to every compound sounds unnatural.
پیشنهاد میکنم پیش از خرید قیمتها را مقایسه کنید.
pishnehâd mi-konam pish az kharid qeymat-hâ râ moqâyese konid.
I suggest that you compare prices before buying. (neutral standard; compound کردن without بـ)
شاید هفتهی بعد تصمیم بگیریم.
shâyad hafte-ye ba'd tasmim begirim.
We may decide next week. (neutral standard; prefix on light verb گرفتن)
The placement follows the two-stem architecture developed on Compound Verbs in the Present: the nonverbal element carries lexical content, while the finite light verb carries mood and agreement.
بودن and داشتن
Two high-frequency verbs require special treatment. The subjunctive of بودن uses باشـ with no بـ: باشم، باشی، باشد، باشیم، باشید، باشند. Possessive داشتن normally uses its participle plus this subjunctive: داشته باشم، داشته باشی, and so on. Standalone بدارم belongs to restricted formal or literary meanings such as “hold/maintain,” not ordinary “have.”
امیدوارم فردا حالت بهتر باشد.
omidvâram fardâ hâl-at behtar bâshad.
I hope you feel better tomorrow. (neutral standard; بودن → باشد)
باید همیشه یک نسخهی پشتیبان داشته باشیم.
bâyad hamishe yek noskhe-ye poshtibân dâshte bâshim.
We should always have a backup copy. (neutral standard; possessive داشتن)
These are genuine irregularities. Treating باشـ as though it were transparently derivable from modern infinitive بودن obscures information learners must simply memorize.
Stress and register
In a regular affirmative simple verb, the subjunctive بـ normally bears the main word stress: the first syllable of بروم and بخوانم is prominent. The written script does not mark this stress. Compound predicates without بـ and verbs with lexical preverbs have their own prosodic patterns, so “stress the first written letter” is not a valid general rule.
The standard forms occur across formal writing and ordinary careful speech. Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) reduces endings and stems: بروم → برم، بشود → بشه، بگویند → بگن. Use a complete colloquial pattern in dialogue; do not attach a formal ending to a reduced stem.
فکر کنم بهتره الان برم.
fekr konam behtare alân beram.
I think I'd better leave now. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Using the past stem
❌ باید نامه را بنوشتم.
as a modern present subjunctive; بنوشتم can occur as a prefixed past form in older or literary Persian
Incorrect in this modern subjunctive context — present subjunctive uses present stem نویس, not past stem نوشت.
✅ باید تا ظهر نامه را بنویسم.
bâyad tâ zohr nâme râ be-nevisam.
I must write the letter by noon.
2. Keeping می inside the subjunctive
❌ شاید فردا بمیرود.
Incorrect — affirmative subjunctive بـ replaces the indicative می prefix.
✅ شاید فردا با قطار برود.
shâyad fardâ bâ qatâr beravad.
She may go by train tomorrow.
3. Doubling بـ before a lexical preverb
❌ میخواهم زود ببرگردم.
Incorrect — برگشتن keeps lexical برـ and does not add another initial بـ.
✅ میخواهم پیش از تاریکی برگردم.
mi-khâham pish az târiki bar-gardam.
I want to return before dark.
4. Regularizing بودن
❌ لازم است ساعت هشت ببیم.
Incorrect — the subjunctive of بودن uses irregular stem باشـ without بـ.
✅ لازم است ساعت هشت در ایستگاه باشم.
lâzem ast sâ'at-e hasht dar istgâh bâsham.
I need to be at the station at eight.
Key Takeaways
- The default affirmative frame is بـ + present stem + present ending.
- Vowel-initial stems have surface forms such as بیایم، بیاورم، بیفتم.
- Lexical preverbs block an extra subjunctive بـ: برگردم، بردارم.
- In compound verbs, mood sits on the light verb; compounds with کردن normally omit affirmative بـ.
- Memorize باشم and ordinary possessive داشته باشم as irregular patterns.
