Compound Verbs as Single Lexical Predicates

Much of everyday Persian vocabulary consists of a nonverbal element plus a “light verb”: کار کردن “work,” تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” حرف زدن “talk,” and گوش دادن “listen.” The two written pieces form one lexical predicate. The first piece supplies most of the specific meaning, while the light verb changes to show who acts, when and how the event is viewed, and whether it is negated.

This division has no exact English equivalent. English often uses one word—decide, listen, start—where Persian uses two. The practical consequence is simple but fundamental: learn the entire Persian predicate as one vocabulary item, not a noun and a vague verb assembled during conversation.

One predicate, two written pieces

The first component may be a noun, adjective, adverbial element, or loanword. The second component is a fully conjugated verb whose independent meaning has become lighter. Common light verbs include کردن “do,” شدن “become,” زدن “hit,” دادن “give,” and گرفتن “take.”

Calling the second part “light” does not mean optional or meaningless. It determines the grammatical shape and often decides who does what to whom. باز کردن is transitive “open something,” while باز شدن is intransitive “open/become open.” The adjective باز stays the same, but the light verb decides whether an external agent acts on an object.

هر روز تا ساعت پنج کار می‌کنم.

har ruz tâ sâ'at panj kâr mi-konam.

I work until five every day. (neutral standard)

بعد از شام کمی با خواهرم حرف زدم.

ba'd az shâm kami bâ khâhar-am harf zadam.

After dinner, I talked with my sister for a while. (neutral conversation)

در را باز کردم، ولی پنجره باز نشد.

dar râ bâz kardam, vali panjare bâz nashod.

I opened the door, but the window did not open. (neutral; transitive کردن versus intransitive شدن)

💡
Treat تصمیم گرفتن the way you treat English decide: one vocabulary item. Persian writes it as two words, but you cannot reliably predict its meaning by translating the two pieces separately.

Conjugate the light verb—not both parts

The nonverbal element normally stays fixed. The light verb alone receives می‌, نـ, tense material, and the personal ending:

InfinitivePresentPastNegative
کار کردنکار می‌کنمکار کردمکار نمی‌کنم
تصمیم گرفتنتصمیم می‌گیرمتصمیم گرفتمتصمیم نمی‌گیرم
گوش دادنگوش می‌دهمگوش دادمگوش نمی‌دهم

می‌ attaches to the verb with a ZWNJ: می‌کنم، می‌گیرم، می‌دهم. It does not move onto the noun. The personal ending also belongs to the light verb. For the full tense pattern, see Compound Verbs in the Present.

امروز صبح زود تصمیم گرفتم با مدیرم صحبت کنم.

emruz sobh-e zud tasmim gereftam bâ modir-am sohbat konam.

Early this morning I decided to speak with my manager. (neutral standard)

وقتی رانندگی می‌کنم، به پیام صوتی گوش نمی‌دهم.

vaqti rânandegi mi-konam, be payâm-e sowti gush nemi-daham.

When I drive, I do not listen to voice messages. (neutral standard)

فایل تازه را دانلود کردی یا هنوز اینترنت قطع است؟

fâyl-e tâze râ dânlod kardi yâ hanuz internet qat' ast?

Did you download the new file, or is the internet still down? (neutral conversation)

The whole predicate is negated even though نـ is visibly attached only to the verb. تصمیم نگرفتم means “I did not decide”; it does not mean that a positive “decision” somehow coexists with a negated “taking.” The marker is written on the light verb, but its meaning covers the whole predicate.

Light-verb choice is lexical

The dictionary meaning of the second verb cannot reliably predict the combination. Persian says تصمیم گرفتن, not “decision do”; گوش دادن, not “ear hit”; and حرف زدن, not “speech do.” Some pairs are related in a useful pattern—especially کردن / شدن for transitive versus intransitive change—but many must simply be learned.

مریم بچه را برای مدرسه آماده کرد و خودش هم آماده شد.

maryam bachche râ barâ-ye madrese âmâde kard va khod-ash ham âmâde shod.

Maryam got the child ready for school and got ready herself too. (neutral; transitive کردن versus intransitive شدن)

اگر سؤال داری، همین حالا از استاد کمک بگیر.

agar so'âl dâri, hamin hâlâ az ostâd komak begir.

If you have a question, get help from the instructor right now. (neutral conversation)

Compare کمک کردن به کسی “help someone” with کمک گرفتن از کسی “get help from someone.” Changing the light verb reverses the direction of help and changes the required preposition. This is why a lexical entry should include not just the two words but also its frame.

💡
Never select a light verb by translating کردن، دادن، گرفتن، زدن in isolation. Retrieve the stored whole: گوش دادن به, کمک کردن به, کمک گرفتن از.

The pieces can separate without ceasing to be one predicate

“Single lexical predicate” does not mean “one written word” or “unbreakable string.” Persian writes the two core pieces separately. A short object ending—also called an object clitic—can attach to the nonverbal element, and focused material may intervene. In دعوتش کردم, ـش “him/her” attaches to دعوت, while کردم still supplies past tense and first-person agreement. The lexical predicate remains دعوت کردن “invite.”

برای جشن پایان دوره دعوتش کردیم، اما نتوانست بیاید.

barâ-ye jashn-e pâyân-e dowre da'vat-esh kardim, ammâ natavânest biyâyad.

We invited him or her to the end-of-course celebration, but they could not come. (neutral standard)

What remains fixed is the lexical partnership and its grammatical frame, not absolute adjacency in every sentence. At A1, the safest production strategy is still to keep the basic pair together until familiar constructions make alternative placement natural.

How to record and look up a compound predicate

Write the citation form with an infinitive: تماس گرفتن, not only تماس and not finite تماس می‌گیرم. Add the complement pattern and one short example:

Vocabulary entryFrame to recordMeaning
تماس گرفتنبا کسی تماس گرفتنcontact/call someone
گوش دادنبه چیزی گوش دادنlisten to something
کمک کردنبه کسی کمک کردنhelp someone
تصمیم گرفتنتصمیم گرفتن که / ...decide that/to...

This practice prevents three errors at once: choosing the wrong light verb, omitting a required preposition, and looking for the wrong dictionary headword. Dictionaries often file a compound under its nonverbal element but give the full infinitive as an entry or subentry.

— فردا چه کار می‌کنی؟ — صبح خرید می‌کنم و بعد با مادربزرگم تماس می‌گیرم.

— fardâ che kâr mi-koni? — sobh kharid mi-konam va ba'd bâ mâdarbozorg-am tamâs mi-giram.

— What are you doing tomorrow? — I'll shop in the morning and then call my grandmother. (neutral conversation)

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving the light verb as an infinitive

❌ من هر روز در کتابخانه کار کردن.

Incorrect — a finite sentence needs a conjugated light verb.

✅ من سه روز در هفته در کتابخانه کار می‌کنم.

man se ruz dar hafte dar ketâbkhâne kâr mi-konam.

I work at the library three days a week.

2. Attaching می‌ to the nonverbal element

❌ او هنوز می‌تصمیم گیرد.

Incorrect — می‌ attaches to the light verb گرفتن.

✅ او همیشه پیش از خرید تصمیم می‌گیرد.

u hamishe pish az kharid tasmim mi-girad.

He or she always decides before buying.

3. Translating the light verb literally

❌ در راه خانه به موسیقی گوش می‌زنم.

Incorrect — Persian lexicalizes ‘listen’ as گوش دادن, not گوش زدن.

✅ در راه خانه به برنامه‌ی رادیویی گوش می‌دهم.

dar râh-e khâne be barnâme-ye râdiyuyi gush mi-daham.

On the way home, I listen to a radio program.

4. Omitting the predicate's preposition

❌ می‌توانی در حل این تمرین من کمک کنی؟

Incorrect — کمک کردن introduces the person helped with به.

✅ می‌توانی در حل این تمرین به من کمک کنی؟

mi-tavâni dar hall-e in tamrin be man komak koni?

Can you help me solve this exercise?

5. Choosing the wrong member of a کردن / شدن pair

❌ صدای زنگ بچه را از خواب بیدار شد.

Incorrect — with a causer acting on a specific object, use بیدار کردن.

✅ صدای زنگ بچه را از خواب بیدار کرد.

sedâ-ye zang bachche râ az khâb bidâr kard.

The sound of the bell woke the child.

Key Takeaways

  • A nonverbal element plus a light verb forms one lexical predicate, though Persian writes the pieces separately.
  • Conjugate and negate only the light verb: تصمیم می‌گیرم، تصمیم نگرفتم.
  • Store the exact partner and frame: گوش دادن به, کمک گرفتن از, کمک کردن به.
  • Light-verb choice can change argument structure: باز کردن acts on an object; باز شدن presents the object as changing state.
  • Look up and record the whole infinitive, not the light verb alone.
