Compound Verbs in the Present

Many everyday Persian verbs contain two written parts: a nonverbal element plus a light verb. In کار کردن “to work,” کار supplies the central lexical idea and کردن carries tense and agreement. The present is therefore کار می‌کنم “I work,” not a form made by changing کار.

The same architecture appears in تلفن زدن “to call,” تصمیم گرفتن “to decide,” شروع شدن “to begin,” and hundreds of other predicates. Learn the two parts as one vocabulary item, but conjugate only the light verb.

The basic construction

The standard present pattern is:

nonverbal element + می‌ + present stem of the light verb + personal ending

Dictionary formPresent stemPresent formMeaning
کار کردنکنکار می‌کنمI work / am working
تلفن زدنزنتلفن می‌زندhe/she calls
تصمیم گرفتنگیرتصمیم می‌گیریمwe decide / are deciding
شروع شدنشوشروع می‌شودit begins / is beginning
کمک کردنکنکمک می‌کنیدyou help / are helping

صبح‌ها در کتابخانه کار می‌کنم.

sobh-hâ dar ketâbkhâne kâr mi-konam.

I work in the library in the mornings. (neutral standard; کار کردن)

مادرم هر شب به مادربزرگم تلفن می‌زند.

mâdar-am har shab be mâdarbozorg-am telefon mi-zanad.

My mother calls my grandmother every night. (neutral standard; تلفن زدن)

جلسه‌ی امروز ساعت سه شروع می‌شود.

jalase-ye emruz sâ'at-e se shoru' mi-shavad.

Today's meeting starts at three. (neutral standard; شروع شدن)

The ending belongs to the light verb: ـم in می‌کنم, ـد in می‌زند, and ـیم in می‌گیریم. The nonverbal element remains unchanged.

Review the complete stem-and-affix map on How a Persian Verb Is Built. The compound predicate adds a nonverbal element but does not create a new set of endings.

💡
When you meet a compound verb, circle its final infinitive mentally. That verb supplies the present stem, می‌, and the person ending; everything before it identifies the lexical predicate.

می‌ belongs immediately before the light verb

In کار می‌کنم, the prefix می‌ attaches to کنم, not to کار. Standard orthography writes a space between the nonverbal element and the inflected light verb, then a ZWNJ inside می‌کنم.

بعد از شام تکالیفم را تمام می‌کنم.

ba'd az shâm takâlif-am râ tamâm mi-konam.

I finish my homework after dinner. (neutral standard; تمام کردن)

برای سفر کدام شهر را انتخاب می‌کنید؟

barâ-ye safar kodâm shahr râ entekhâb mi-konid?

Which city are you choosing for the trip? (polite standard; انتخاب کردن)

The order reveals Persian structure. English treats finish and choose as one-word verbs; Persian packages the same meanings as تمام کردن and انتخاب کردن. You cannot translate one English word at a time and then guess the light verb.

The whole pair has a lexical meaning

The noun or adjective keeps an identifiable meaning, but the compound is a stored lexical unit. حرف زدن means “to talk,” not literally “to hit speech”; تصمیم گرفتن means “to decide,” not “to take a decision” in every English context. Changing the light verb can change the predicate or create an unnatural combination.

بچه‌ها در اتاق کناری آرام حرف می‌زنند.

bachche-hâ dar otâq-e kenâri ârâm harf mi-zanand.

The children are talking quietly in the next room. (neutral standard; حرف زدن)

امروز درباره‌ی پیشنهاد شما تصمیم می‌گیریم.

emruz darbâre-ye pishnehâd-e shomâ tasmim mi-girim.

We will decide about your proposal today. (formal-neutral; تصمیم گرفتن)

The exact light verb must be learned with the expression. عکس گرفتن is “take a photo,” whereas عکس دیدن simply means “see a photo.” The grammar is productive, but lexical choice is not freely predictable.

💡
Write compound verbs on vocabulary cards as complete infinitives—تصمیم گرفتن, not merely تصمیم. Also record the light verb's present stem: گرفتن (گیر). This prevents both vocabulary and conjugation errors.

“Separate” in spelling does not mean freely reorderable

Most noun-plus-light-verb predicates are written as separate words: صحبت کردن، گوش دادن، جواب دادن. Other sentence material normally appears before the compound or at a position licensed by the particular predicate. The two pieces can be phonologically and syntactically less rigid than a single simple verb, but an A1 learner should keep the lexical pair in its ordinary order.

دانشجو با دقت به توضیح استاد گوش می‌دهد.

dâneshju bâ deqqat be towzih-e ostâd gush mi-dahad.

The student listens carefully to the professor's explanation. (neutral standard; گوش دادن)

Here به توضیح استاد is the prepositional complement of the whole predicate گوش دادن. It does not turn دادن into the ordinary verb “give.” Similarly, به سؤال جواب دادن means “answer the question” as a unit.

مسئول پذیرش به همه‌ی پرسش‌ها جواب می‌دهد.

mas'ul-e paziresh be hame-ye porsesh-hâ javâb mi-dahad.

The receptionist answers all the questions. (neutral standard; جواب دادن)

Advanced pages explain clitics, focus, and true discontinuity. For now, preserve nonverbal element + inflected light verb unless you have learned a specific alternative pattern.

Negation stays on the light verb

To make a negative present, change می‌ to نمی‌ on the light verb: کار نمی‌کنم، تلفن نمی‌زند، تصمیم نمی‌گیریم. Do not put نـ on the noun.

جمعه‌ها کار نمی‌کنیم و بیشتر استراحت می‌کنیم.

jom'e-hâ kâr nemi-konim-o bishtar esterâhat mi-konim.

We don't work on Fridays and mostly rest. (neutral standard)

Some frequent predicates use a light verb whose ordinary present lacks می‌. Most importantly, دوست داشتن is دوست دارم “I like/love,” not دوست می‌دارم in neutral contemporary speech. The latter exists in elevated or literary usage, so it is not an error in every context; learn neutral دوست دارم as a lexical pattern.

من موسیقی سنتی را خیلی دوست دارم.

man musiqi-ye sonnati râ kheyli dust dâram.

I really like traditional music. (neutral standard; دوست داشتن has no می‌ in its ordinary present)

A short exchange

بعد از کلاس چه کار می‌کنی؟

ba'd az kelâs che kâr mi-koni?

What are you doing after class? (careful spoken standard)

اول خرید می‌کنم، بعد به سارا تلفن می‌زنم.

avval kharid mi-konam, ba'd be sârâ telefon mi-zanam.

First I'll do the shopping, then I'll call Sara. (careful spoken standard)

The present forms receive future readings because بعد از کلاس، اول، بعد establish a plan. Persian does not need a separate future form for every scheduled action.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving the light verb as an infinitive

❌ من هر روز ورزش کردن.

Incorrect — کردن is an infinitive and does not identify person or tense.

✅ من سه روز در هفته ورزش می‌کنم.

man se ruz dar hafte varzesh mi-konam.

I exercise three days a week.

2. Attaching می‌ to the noun

❌ من می‌کار کنم.

Incorrect — می‌ belongs on the light verb کن, not on کار.

✅ من امروز از خانه کار می‌کنم.

man emruz az khâne kâr mi-konam.

I'm working from home today.

3. Using the past stem in the present

❌ او الان تلفن می‌زدم.

Incorrect — third-person present تلفن زدن requires present stem زن and ending ـد.

✅ او الان به شرکت تلفن می‌زند.

u alân be sherkat telefon mi-zanad.

He or she is calling the company now.

4. Giving the nonverbal noun a person ending

❌ ما کاریم می‌کند.

Incorrect — person agreement belongs on the light verb; کاریم reads like a separate noun form.

✅ ما در یک گروه کوچک کار می‌کنیم.

mâ dar yek goruh-e kuchek kâr mi-konim.

We work in a small group.

5. Guessing the light verb from English

❌ لطفا به توضیحات راهنما گوش بزنید.

Incorrect lexical pairing — standard Persian uses گوش دادن for ‘listen.’

✅ خواهش می‌کنم به توضیحات راهنما گوش بدهید.

khâhesh mi-konam be towzihât-e râhnamâ gush be-dahid.

Please listen to the guide's explanations.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn the nonverbal element and light verb as one vocabulary item.
  • Conjugate only the light verb: تصمیم می‌گیرم، تلفن می‌زنید، شروع می‌شود.
  • Put می‌ or نمی‌ immediately before the light verb and write the required ZWNJ.
  • Separate spelling does not permit arbitrary order; preserve the lexical pair's construction.
  • Remember lexical exceptions such as neutral دوست دارم, which ordinarily has no می‌.
