Conjugating Only the Light Verb

A Persian compound predicate such as کار کردن “to work” contains two written pieces, but only the light verb is conjugated. کار stays کار; کردن becomes می‌کنم، کردی، نکرده‌ایم، کنیم, and so on. The changing verb carries the grammar of the entire predicate.

English learners often understand the meaning yet build the form incorrectly because English work is one word. The reliable method is to store کار کردن as the lemma, keep its nonverbal element stable, and apply verbal morphology to کردن alone. This page develops that architecture; ordinary tense formation is reviewed on Compound Verbs in the Present.

One lexical predicate, one inflected component

The basic construction is:

SlotWhat it contributesWhat happens to it
nonverbal elementthe specific lexical content: کار، تصمیم، آماده، تماسnormally remains unchanged
light verbwho participates and how (argument structure), plus verbal grammar: کردن، گرفتن، شدنtakes tense, aspect, mood, negation, and person
whole lemmaکار کردن، تصمیم گرفتن، آماده شدن، تماس گرفتنthe unit to learn and look up

من بیشتر روزها از خانه کار می‌کنم.

man bishtar-e ruz-hâ az khâne kâr mi-konam.

I work from home most days. (neutral standard; present)

دیروز درباره‌ی سفرمان تصمیم گرفتیم.

diruz darbâre-ye safar-emân tasmim gereftim.

Yesterday we made a decision about our trip. (neutral standard; past)

تا ساعت شش آماده می‌شوید؟

tâ sâ'at-e shesh âmâde mi-shavid?

Will you be ready by six? (polite standard; future interpretation of the present)

The subject agrees with the light verb, not with the nominal element. من تصمیم گرفتم and ما تصمیم گرفتیم differ only in the ending on گرفتـ. Persian does not pluralize or otherwise alter تصمیم merely because ما is plural.

💡
The spelling contains two words, but the inflectional template contains only one verb. Think “stable lexical partner + changing verbal carrier.”

Where tense, aspect, person, and negation go

Using بررسی کردن “to examine/review,” the main pattern is visible at a glance:

CategoryWhole predicateChanging materialRegister
present indicativeبررسی می‌کنممی‌ + کن + ـمneutral standard
simple pastبررسی کردمکرد + ـمall modern registers
negative pastبررسی نکردمنـ + کرد + ـمall modern registers
present perfectبررسی کرده‌امکرده + ـامneutral standard
subjunctiveبررسی کنمکن + ـمneutral; prefixless form usual in compounds
futureبررسی خواهم کردخواهم + کردformal/written

In the present, می‌ is attached with a ZWNJ to the light verb: بررسی می‌کنم, never to بررسی. Negation likewise attaches to the light verb and takes scope over the whole predicate: بررسی نکردم means “I did not review it.” The nominal element does not keep a separate positive assertion.

هنوز پیام‌های امروز را بررسی نکرده‌ام.

hanuz payâm-hâ-ye emruz râ barrasi na-karde-am.

I haven't reviewed today's messages yet. (neutral standard; negative present perfect)

بهتر است پیش از خرید تحقیق کنیم.

behtar ast pish az kharid tahqiq konim.

It is better for us to research before buying. (neutral standard; subjunctive)

نتیجه را فردا اعلام خواهند کرد.

natije râ fardâ e'lâm khâhand kard.

They will announce the result tomorrow. (formal/written future)

The formal future illustrates a useful refinement. The future auxiliary itself is conjugated, while the light verb appears as the past stem کرد: اعلام خواهم کرد، اعلام خواهیم کرد. The nonverbal element اعلام still remains stable. In ordinary conversation, Persian usually uses the present with a future time expression instead: فردا اعلام می‌کنم (neutral conversation).

Mood and commands

In many compounds with کردن, the affirmative subjunctive and imperative omit بـ: سعی کنم، صبر کنید. With other light verbs, the prefix may be present: تصمیم بگیر، آماده بشو. This choice belongs to the light verb and to conventional usage, not to the nominal element.

لطفا تا فردا صبر کنید.

lotfan tâ fardâ sabr konid.

Please wait until tomorrow. (polite neutral command)

اگر مطمئن نیستی، عجله نکن.

agar motma'en nisti, ajale nakon.

If you're not sure, don't rush. (neutral conversation; negative command)

می‌خواهم امشب زودتر آماده شوم.

mi-khâham emshab zudtar âmâde shavam.

I want to get ready earlier tonight. (neutral standard; subjunctive شدن)

There is no honest shortcut that predicts every affirmative prefix. Learn the citation form and a useful command or subjunctive along with it: کمک کردن — کمک کن, تصمیم گرفتن — تصمیم بگیر, آماده شدن — آماده شو.

Separation does not create two predicates

The lexical partners are usually adjacent, but clitics and certain focused material can intervene. In دعوتش کردم, the object clitic ـش attaches to دعوت, while کردم carries past tense and subject agreement. The lemma remains دعوت کردن “to invite.”

برای شام دعوتشان کردیم، ولی وقت نداشتند.

barâ-ye shâm da'vat-eshân kardim, vali vaqt na-dâshtand.

We invited them to dinner, but they didn't have time. (neutral standard; object clitic inside the compound)

That separation is syntactic, not evidence that دعوت alone means “invite.” A dictionary entry or flashcard should still record دعوت کردن, ideally with its object pattern.

Stress and spoken rhythm

In a neutral sentence, without special contrastive emphasis, a familiar compound is normally spoken as one rhythmic predicate without a deliberate pause between its partners. The nonverbal element is often prominent and the light verb relatively weak; negation can attract prominence to نـ. Contrastive focus can override this pattern—someone correcting “reviewed” to “SIGNED” will stress امضا.

English speakers sometimes pause after the noun because they are mentally translating each word. That can make an ordinary compound sound like a list or a repaired sentence. Preserve the written space, but pronounce تصمیم گرفتم as a fluent unit.

— بالاخره چه تصمیمی گرفتی؟ — تصمیم گرفتم پیشنهاد را قبول کنم.

— bâlâkhare che tasmimi gerefti? — tasmim gereftam pishnehâd râ qabul konam.

— What did you finally decide? — I decided to accept the offer. (neutral conversation)

💡
Do not memorize a compound as “noun + any conjugation of some general verb.” Store the infinitive تصمیم گرفتن, then retrieve the ordinary present stem, command, complements, and register of that exact predicate.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving the light verb unconjugated

❌ من هر روز تا ساعت پنج کار کردن.

Incorrect — کردن is an infinitive; a finite clause needs کار می‌کنم.

✅ من روزهای جمعه هم تا ظهر کار می‌کنم.

man ruz-hâ-ye jom'e ham tâ zohr kâr mi-konam.

I work until noon on Fridays too.

2. Conjugating both pieces

❌ ما تصمیم‌ها گرفتیم که زود برویم.

Incorrect for ‘we decided’ — pluralizing تصمیم treats the lexical partner as an ordinary count noun.

✅ ما تصمیم گرفتیم پیش از تاریکی برگردیم.

mâ tasmim gereftim pish az târiki bargardim.

We decided to return before dark.

3. Putting می‌ on the nominal element

❌ مدیر می‌اعلام کند که جلسه لغو است.

Incorrect — می‌ belongs on the light verb: اعلام می‌کند.

✅ مدیر نتیجه‌ی جلسه را عصر اعلام می‌کند.

modir natije-ye jalase râ asr e'lâm mi-konad.

The manager will announce the meeting's outcome this evening.

4. Negating only an imagined independent light verb

❌ من تصمیم گرفتم نه کنم.

Incorrect — negate the light verb inside the whole predicate: تصمیم نگرفتم.

✅ هنوز تصمیم نگرفته‌ام کدام مسیر بهتر است.

hanuz tasmim na-gerefte-am kodâm masir behtar ast.

I haven't decided yet which route is better.

5. Using only the changing piece

❌ من دیروز درباره‌ی سفر گرفتم.

Incorrect — گرفتن alone means ‘take’; ‘decide’ requires the whole predicate تصمیم گرفتن.

✅ این ترکیب را در دفترم به صورت «تصمیم گرفتن» نوشته‌ام.

in tarkib râ dar daftar-am be surat-e ‘tasmim gereftan’ neveshte-am.

I have written this expression in my notebook as ‘تصمیم گرفتن.’

Key Takeaways

  • The nonverbal element normally stays stable; the light verb carries the predicate's inflection.
  • می‌, negation, personal endings, participles, and mood marking belong to the verbal component.
  • A clitic may separate the written pieces without changing the compound's lexical identity.
  • Fluent compounds form one prosodic predicate, although contrastive focus can move prominence.
  • Record the entire infinitive, not the light verb by itself.
