Present Perfect Formation

The Persian present perfect combines a past participle with a present copula: رفته‌ام “I have gone,” دیده‌ای “you have seen,” رسیده است “he/she has arrived.” The lexical participle identifies the event; the copula identifies person and connects its result or relevance to the present.

English uses have as its perfect auxiliary. Persian does not use possessive داشتن here. Think “gone-am, seen-are, arrived-is” as a structural aid, even though the natural English translations are “have gone, have seen, has arrived.”

Build the form in two stages

First add ه to the past stem to form the participle. Then attach or add the present copula:

past participleرفتهgone
participle + first-singular copulaرفته‌امI have gone
participle + third-singular copulaرفته استhe/she has gone

من همه‌ی مدارک را فرستاده‌ام.

man hame-ye madârek râ ferestâde-am.

I have sent all the documents. (neutral written standard; first singular)

پرواز شیراز به فرودگاه رسیده است.

parvâz-e shirâz be forudgâh reside ast.

The Shiraz flight has arrived at the airport. (neutral written standard; third singular)

💡
The lexical verb in the present perfect uses no present stem. Its two ingredients are the past participle and a present copula; searching for می‌ or a present lexical stem leads to the wrong construction.

The six standard forms

With دیدن “to see,” participle دیده, the written-standard paradigm is:

PersonCopulaPerfectReading
Iـامدیده‌امdide-am
you (singular)ـایدیده‌ایdide-i
he/she/itاستدیده استdide ast
weـایمدیده‌ایمdide-im
you (plural/polite)ـایددیده‌ایدdide-id
theyـانددیده‌اندdide-and

این نمایشگاه را پیش از این دیده‌ای؟

in namâyeshgâh râ pish az in dide-i?

Have you seen this exhibition before? (careful spoken standard; second singular)

ما هنوز نتیجه‌ی آزمایش را ندیده‌ایم.

mâ hanuz natije-ye âzmâyesh râ nadide-im.

We have not seen the test result yet. (neutral standard; first plural)

شما این فرم را امضا کرده‌اید؟

shomâ in form râ emzâ karde-id?

Have you signed this form? (polite standard; second plural/polite)

آن‌ها برای دوره‌ی تازه ثبت‌نام کرده‌اند.

ân-hâ barâ-ye dowre-ye tâze sabt-nâm karde-and.

They have registered for the new course. (neutral standard; third plural)

The subject pronoun remains optional when discourse already identifies the referent. فرستاده‌ام itself is first singular; فرستاده‌اند is third plural.

Standard orthography: ZWNJ versus space

The attached copulas begin with a vowel. After participial ه, standard spelling uses a ZWNJ in رفته‌ام، رفته‌ای، رفته‌ایم، رفته‌اید، رفته‌اند. Do not replace it with an ordinary space. Third-person است is the exception because it is an independent written word: رفته است.

تا اینجا پنج فصل نوشته‌ام و دو فصل دیگر مانده است.

tâ injâ panj fasl neveshte-am-o do fasl-e digar mânde ast.

So far I have written five chapters, and two chapters remain. (written standard; attached versus separate copula)

The ZWNJ records a morphological boundary without creating a full word space. It is not optional decoration: search, display, and pronunciation all benefit from the standard form.

Negation belongs inside the participle

Add نـ before the past stem, then keep participial ه and the copula: نرفته‌ام، ندیده‌ای، نرسیده است، ننوشته‌اند. The form denies the anterior event while preserving present relevance.

هنوز پاسخ نهایی را دریافت نکرده‌ایم.

hanuz pâsokh-e nahâyi râ daryâft nakarde-im.

We have not received the final answer yet. (formal-neutral)

سارا امروز به دفتر نیامده است.

sârâ emruz be daftar niyâmade ast.

Sara has not come to the office today. (neutral standard)

In an ordinary negative perfect, do not move negation onto the copula. نرفته‌ام is the productive unit. A structure such as رفته نیست can contrast a resulting state in special contexts, but it is not the default way to say “has not gone.”

Compound verbs

Only the light verb becomes a participle: کار کرده‌ام، تصمیم گرفته‌ای، شروع شده است، جواب نداده‌اند. The nonverbal element remains separate.

تا امروز سه بار با بخش فروش تماس گرفته‌ام.

tâ emruz se bâr bâ bakhsh-e forush tamâs gerefte-am.

Up to today I have contacted the sales department three times. (neutral standard)

کارشناسان بررسی پرونده را شروع کرده‌اند.

kârshenâsân barrasi-ye parvande râ shoru' karde-and.

The experts have begun examining the file. (formal-neutral)

The perfect auxiliary does not change the argument structure of the compound predicate. تماس گرفتن still takes با, and شروع کردن remains transitive here.

Colloquial Tehran reduction

In everyday Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), the participial vowel and following copula often contract. Every person except third singular can become segmentally identical to the corresponding colloquial simple-past form: for example, standard رفته‌ام and colloquial perfect رفتم; standard رفته‌ای and colloquial perfect رفتی. Stress and context carry the contrast. Third singular normally drops است, leaving رفته, which remains distinct from simple-past رفت.

Standard perfectTehran conversational formPotential ambiguity
رفته‌امرفتمalso spells simple past “I went”
رفته‌ایرفتیalso spells simple past “you went”
رفته استرفتهperfect remains segmentally distinct
رفته‌ایمرفتیمalso spells simple past “we went”
رفته‌ایدرفتینalso spells colloquial simple past “you went”
رفته‌اندرفتنalso spells colloquial simple past “they went”

نیما هنوز نرسیده.

nimâ hanuz naraside.

Nima hasn't arrived yet. (informal, regional: Tehran; است omitted)

تا حالا یزد رفتین؟

tâ hâlâ yazd raftin?

Have you ever been to Yazd? (informal, regional: Tehran; reduced plural/polite perfect)

The app's house romanization does not mark stress, so the time phrase تا حالا is especially valuable: it forces the life-experience reading. In careful writing, use آیا تا به حال به یزد رفته‌اید؟ and preserve the full participle.

💡
Do not “correct” colloquial رفتم to simple past without context. In Tehran speech it may represent رفته‌ام; time expressions and stress distinguish the perfect reading.

Common Mistakes

1. Replacing the ZWNJ with a space

❌ من تکلیف را نوشته ام.

Incorrect standard spelling — the first-person copula attaches to نوشته with a ZWNJ.

✅ من تکلیف امروز را نوشته‌ام.

man taklif-e emruz râ neveshte-am.

I have written today's homework.

2. Joining third-singular است with a ZWNJ

❌ قطار رسیده‌است.

Incorrect standard spelling — third-singular است is written as a separate word.

✅ قطار به ایستگاه آخر رسیده است.

qetâr be istgâh-e âkhar reside ast.

The train has reached the final station.

3. Using داشتن as the perfect auxiliary

❌ من دارم گزارش را نوشته.

Incorrect — English perfect ‘have’ is not possessive داشتن in Persian.

✅ من گزارش را برای مدیر نوشته‌ام.

man gozâresh râ barâ-ye modir neveshte-am.

I have written the report for the manager.

4. Adding می‌ to the basic perfect

❌ تا حالا این کتاب را می‌خوانده‌ام.

as the basic experience meaning ‘I have read this book’

Incorrect for the intended basic perfect — می‌خوانده‌ام has a different imperfective/evidential structure.

✅ تا حالا دو کتاب از این نویسنده خوانده‌ام.

tâ hâlâ do ketâb az in nevisande khânde-am.

So far I have read two books by this author.

5. Mismatching the subject and copula

❌ ما زودتر رسیده‌اند.

Incorrect — first-plural ما requires ـایم, not third-plural ـاند.

✅ ما پیش از بقیه به محل رسیده‌ایم.

mâ pish az baqiyye be mahall reside-im.

We have arrived at the location before the others.
