Valency Shifts through Light-Verb Alternation

Changing a Persian light verb can reorganize the entire participant structure of a predicate. آرام شدن has one central participant that becomes calm; کسی را آرام کردن adds a causer and turns that participant into a direct object. اجازه دادن به کسی presents the source of permission as subject, while اجازه گرفتن از کسی presents the recipient as subject.

These are changes in valency: the number and grammatical realization of a predicate's participants. Persian has no noun case endings to label agent, experiencer, and theme. Instead, subject agreement, را, prepositions, and word order reveal the roles selected by the complete compound.

A frame-based view

Do not compare light verbs in isolation. Compare complete lexical frames:

AlternationFrameRole shift
آرام شدنtheme/experiencer + becomes calmone participant changes state
کسی را آرام کردنcauser + affected participant + راadds an external causer
به کسی اجازه دادنsource + recipient with بهprofiles transfer outward
از کسی اجازه گرفتنrecipient + source with ازprofiles acquisition
کسی را فریب دادنinitiator + affected objectprofiles causation
فریب خوردنaffected participant as subjectprofiles adverse result

The nonverbal element helps connect the pair semantically, but the light verb determines which perspective becomes grammatical subject and which complements are licensed.

صدای آرام پرستار کودک را آرام کرد.

sedâ-ye ârâm-e parastâr kudak râ ârâm kard.

The nurse's calm voice soothed the child. (neutral standard; causer plus affected object)

کودک بعد از چند دقیقه آرام شد.

kudak ba'd az chand daqiqe ârâm shod.

The child calmed down after a few minutes. (neutral standard; affected participant as subject)

💡
Translate roles, not word order alone. In Persian, the same participant may be a را-marked object with کردن and the agreeing subject with شدن.

Adding a causer: کردن versus شدن

The most systematic valency increase pairs an intransitive change with a causative predicate. شدن presents the transition; کردن adds the entity responsible for it.

باد پنجره را باز کرد و اتاق سرد شد.

bâd panjare râ bâz kard-o otâq sard shod.

The wind opened the window, and the room became cold. (neutral standard; causer and subsequent change)

این خبر همه‌ی کارکنان را نگران کرد.

in khabar hame-ye kârkonân râ negarân kard.

This news worried all the employees. (neutral standard; stimulus as causer, experiencers as objects)

همه‌ی کارکنان با شنیدن خبر نگران شدند.

hame-ye kârkonân bâ shenidan-e khabar negarân shodand.

All the employees became worried when they heard the news. (neutral standard; experiencers as subjects)

The causer need not be intentional: wind can open a door, news can worry people, and sunlight can warm a room. “Causer” is therefore broader than “agent.” An agent acts intentionally; a cause merely brings about the result.

This alternation is productive with many result expressions but not universal. Persian uses تغییر دادن / تغییر کردن for “change something / change,” not a mechanically predicted تغییر شدن in the same ordinary lexical contrast. Existing pairs outrank the template.

Reversing perspective: دادن versus گرفتن

Transfer-like pairs preserve a broad event while changing the profiled endpoint. With دادن, the source or provider is subject and the recipient commonly appears with به. With گرفتن, the recipient is subject and the source commonly appears with از.

مدیر به من اجازه داد امروز دورکاری کنم.

modir be man ejâze dâd emruz durkâri konam.

The manager allowed me to work remotely today. (neutral standard; source as subject)

من از مدیر اجازه گرفتم امروز دورکاری کنم.

man az modir ejâze gereftam emruz durkâri konam.

I got the manager's permission to work remotely today. (neutral standard; recipient as subject)

استاد روش جست‌وجوی منابع را به ما یاد داد.

ostâd ravesh-e jost-o-ju-ye manâbe' râ be mâ yâd dâd.

The professor taught us how to search for sources. (academic-neutral; teacher/source as subject)

ما روش جست‌وجوی منابع را از استاد یاد گرفتیم.

mâ ravesh-e jost-o-ju-ye manâbe' râ az ostâd yâd gereftim.

We learned how to search for sources from the professor. (academic-neutral; learner/recipient as subject)

These are not active and passive forms of one verb. Each is a separately stored predicate with its own subject choice and preposition. The more detailed comparison appears on دادن versus گرفتن Perspective Pairs.

Initiator versus affected participant

Some pairs place the initiator in subject position with دادن or زدن, but place the affected participant there with خوردن. فریب دادن / فریب خوردن and شکست دادن / شکست خوردن are high-frequency examples.

تبلیغ گمراه‌کننده بسیاری از خریداران را فریب داد.

tabligh-e gomrâh-konande besyâri az kharidârân râ farib dâd.

The misleading advertisement deceived many buyers. (formal-neutral; initiator as subject)

این بار هیچ‌کس فریب وعده‌ی تخفیف را نخورد.

in bâr hich-kas farib-e va'de-ye takhfif râ na-khord.

This time nobody was fooled by the promise of a discount. (neutral standard; affected participant as subject)

English may translate the second sentence with a passive, but خوردن is not a general passive auxiliary. It belongs to a limited lexical family. Similarly, ضربه زدن به چیزی and ضربه خوردن reverse impact perspective, but the exact complement frame must be checked for each predicate.

Adding or reclassifying an experiencer

Experiencers may surface as subjects of states and changes, or as objects of a causative. Compare a three-way field:

FrameExperiencer's roleSituation
به موضوع علاقه داشتنsubjectholds an interest
به موضوع علاقه‌مند شدنsubjectenters the interested state
کسی را به موضوع علاقه‌مند کردنرا-marked objecta causer creates the interest

از دبیرستان به تاریخ محلی علاقه داشتم.

az dabirestân be târikh-e mahalli alâqe dâshtam.

I had been interested in local history since high school. (neutral standard; experiencer state)

این پادکست مرا به تاریخ محلی علاقه‌مند کرد.

in pâdkast marâ be târikh-e mahalli alâqe-mand kard.

This podcast got me interested in local history. (neutral standard; stimulus/causer plus experiencer object)

بعد از شنیدن آن برنامه به تاریخ محلی علاقه‌مند شدم.

ba'd az shenidan-e ân barnâme be târikh-e mahalli alâqe-mand shodam.

After hearing that program, I became interested in local history. (neutral standard; experiencer as changing subject)

The prepositional content phrase به تاریخ محلی remains stable, while the experiencer changes grammatical role. That is a valency alternation, not simply a tense contrast.

How Persian marks roles without noun cases

Persian nouns do not inflect for nominative or accusative case. Several independent signals work together:

  • the finite light verb agrees with the subject;
  • را commonly marks a specific direct object;
  • prepositions such as به and از introduce lexically selected roles;
  • neutral word order places the subject before complements and the compound predicate last;
  • discourse can scramble constituents, so the predicate's stored frame remains essential.

این تجربه به ما اعتمادبه‌نفس داد.

in tajrobe be mâ e'temâd-be-nafs dâd.

This experience gave us self-confidence. (neutral standard; cause/source subject and recipient with به)

ما از این تجربه اعتمادبه‌نفس گرفتیم.

mâ az in tajrobe e'temâd-be-nafs gereftim.

We gained self-confidence from this experience. (neutral standard; recipient subject and source with از)

💡
Because Persian lacks noun case endings, a wrong preposition can reverse or erase a role. Record به کسی اجازه دادن and از کسی اجازه گرفتن as complete frames.

Lexical gaps and register

Valency tendencies are productive only within lexical limits. کمک گرفتن از کسی pairs semantically with به کسی کمک کردن, not invented کمک دادن. تغییر دادن / تغییر کردن uses two different light verbs from the common کردن / شدن causative template. Formal prose may favor passive or nominal alternatives, but the underlying lexical restrictions remain.

— از کسی کمک گرفتی؟ — بله، سارا در تنظیم گزارش به من کمک کرد.

— az kasi komak gerefti? — bale, sârâ dar tanzim-e gozâresh be man komak kard.

— Did you get help from anyone? — Yes, Sara helped me organize the report. (neutral conversation; asymmetric lexical pair)

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping را after switching to شدن

❌ کودک را با صدای موسیقی آرام شد.

Incorrect — with شدن, the changing participant is the subject and does not take را.

✅ کودک با صدای موسیقی آرام شد.

kudak bâ sedâ-ye musiqi ârâm shod.

The child calmed down to the sound of the music.

2. Reversing source and recipient

❌ از دانشجو اجازه دادم زودتر برود.

Incorrect — the permission giver uses به for the recipient; از belongs with گرفتن from a source.

✅ به دانشجو اجازه دادم زودتر برود.

be dâneshju ejâze dâdam zudtar beravad.

I allowed the student to leave earlier.

3. Treating خوردن as a universal passive

❌ نامه دیروز نوشته خورد.

Incorrect — genuine periphrastic passives use a participle plus شدن, not خوردن.

✅ نامه دیروز نوشته شد و امروز ارسال شد.

nâme diruz neveshte shod-o emruz ersâl shod.

The letter was written yesterday and sent today.

4. Generating a nonexistent symmetrical pair

❌ مربی به بازیکن کمک داد.

Incorrect — Persian uses کمک کردن به for the helper's perspective.

✅ پرستار به بیمار کمک کرد و بیمار از تخت بلند شد.

parastâr be bimâr komak kard-o bimâr az takht boland shod.

The nurse helped the patient, and the patient got out of bed.

Key Takeaways

  • Light-verb alternation can add a causer, reverse transfer perspective, or promote an affected participant to subject.
  • را, prepositions, agreement, and stored frames mark roles because Persian nouns lack case endings.
  • Causers need not be intentional agents; stimuli and natural forces can cause changes.
  • Related predicates are separate lexical frames, not automatically active/passive versions.
  • Semantic tendencies guide analysis, but lexical gaps prevent free generation.
