Nominal Modification inside a Compound

The nonverbal element of a Persian light-verb construction may retain genuine noun-like structure. تصمیم گرفتن means “decide,” but Persian can also say تصمیم سختی گرفتن “make a difficult decision,” چند تصمیم گرفتن “make several decisions,” or همان تصمیم را گرفتن “make that same decision.” Ezâfe, adjectives, plurals, and determiners reveal different degrees of nominal independence.

This does not disprove the compound's lexical unity. The light verb still completes the predicate, and conventional pairing still matters. Instead, Persian permits a continuum from tightly lexicalized combinations to transparent noun-plus-light-verb structures.

A continuum, not a yes-or-no test

Modification is easiest when the nonverbal element denotes a recognizable participant or event token:

ShapeExampleWhat becomes visibleReading
bare elementتصمیم گرفتthe lexical predicate as a wholedecided
adjective through ezâfeتصمیم سختی گرفتa decision with a propertymade a difficult decision
pluralتصمیم‌های مهمی گرفتseveral decision tokensmade important decisions
determiner + راهمان تصمیم را گرفتan identified decisionmade that same decision

The more internal nominal syntax appears, the more compositional the phrase becomes. Yet گرفتن remains the conventional partner for “make a decision.” English uses make; Persian does not therefore switch to کردن.

بعد از چند هفته فکر کردن، تصمیم سختی گرفتم.

ba'd az chand hafte fekr kardan, tasmim-e sakhti gereftam.

After thinking for several weeks, I made a difficult decision. (neutral standard; adjective linked by ezâfe)

هیئت‌مدیره در یک روز چند تصمیم مهم گرفت.

hey'at-modire dar yek ruz chand tasmim-e mohem gereft.

The board made several important decisions in one day. (formal-neutral; numeral and adjective)

با وجود اطلاعات تازه، او همان تصمیم قبلی را گرفت.

bâ vojud-e ettelâ'ât-e tâze, u hamân tasmim-e qabli râ gereft.

Despite the new information, he or she made the same decision as before. (neutral standard; identified nominal element)

💡
Modification diagnoses noun-like structure inside the predicate; it does not license a different light verb. Learn تصمیم گرفتن even when تصمیم expands into a full noun phrase.

Ezâfe and adjectives

A Persian adjective follows a noun through ezâfe. Consonant-final nouns do not write the linker, so تصمیم سخت is pronounced tasmim-e sakht. With indefinite ـی, the expanded nonverbal phrase can be تصمیم سختی “a difficult decision.”

مدیر قول روشنی داد و به آن عمل کرد.

modir qowl-e rowshani dâd-o be ân amal kard.

The manager made a clear promise and kept it. (formal-neutral; modified قول inside قول دادن)

دوستم پیشنهاد جالبی داد که قبلا به ذهنم نرسیده بود.

dust-am pishnehâd-e jâlebi dâd ke qablan be zehn-am na-reside bud.

My friend made an interesting suggestion that had not occurred to me before. (neutral standard; modified پیشنهاد)

امروز از مدیر اجازه‌ی کتبی گرفتم.

emruz az modir ejâze-ye katbi gereftam.

Today I obtained written permission from the manager. (formal-neutral; modified اجازه)

For the form of this linker itself, review Noun + Adjective with Ezâfe. The light-verb construction adds no special ezâfe rule.

Plural marking changes event individuation

When a count noun inside a compound becomes plural, the sentence often refers to multiple acts or results: قول‌های زیادی داد “made many promises,” اشتباه‌های عجیبی کرد “made strange mistakes.” Standard ـها attaches with a ZWNJ.

در مصاحبه چند اشتباه کوچک کردم.

dar mosâhebe chand eshtebâh-e kuchek kardam.

I made several small mistakes in the interview. (neutral standard; counted nonverbal noun)

نامزد انتخابات قول‌های زیادی داد، اما برنامه‌ی دقیقی ارائه نکرد.

nâmzad-e entekhâbât qowl-hâ-ye ziyâdi dâd, ammâ barnâme-ye daqiqi erâ'e na-kard.

The election candidate made many promises but presented no detailed plan. (formal-neutral; plural nonverbal noun)

Pluralization is not available merely because a compound is written with a noun. Tightly idiomatic or mass-like elements may resist it, and a plural can force a literal reading. گوش دادن means “listen”; plural گوش‌ها دادن does not mean “listen repeatedly.” The lexical element گوش is not a freely countable event noun in this predicate.

Adverbial versus nominal modification

Word order creates important minimal contrasts:

Nominal modificationAdverbial modification
کار خوبی کرد — did a good deedخوب کار کرد — worked well
حرف عجیبی زد — made a strange remarkعجیب حرف زد — spoke strangely
تصمیم سریعی گرفت — made a quick decisionسریع تصمیم گرفت — decided quickly

In the left column, the adjective follows the noun and ezâfe links them; it describes a thing or event token. In the right column, the adverb precedes the compound and describes how the whole event unfolds.

همسایه‌مان کار خوبی کرد و خریدهای پیرمرد را تا خانه برد.

hamsâye-mân kâr-e khubi kard-o kharid-hâ-ye pirmard râ tâ khâne bord.

Our neighbor did a good deed and carried the old man's shopping home. (neutral standard; good describes the deed)

همکار تازه‌مان خیلی خوب کار می‌کند.

hamkâr-e tâze-mân kheyli khub kâr mi-konad.

Our new colleague works very well. (neutral standard; well modifies working)

او حرف عجیبی زد و همه ساکت شدند.

u harf-e ajibi zad-o hame sâket shodand.

He or she made a strange remark, and everyone fell silent. (neutral standard; nominal modification)

او امروز عجیب حرف می‌زد؛ انگار نگران بود.

u emruz ajib harf mi-zad; engâr negarân bud.

He or she was speaking strangely today, as if worried. (neutral conversation; adverbial modification)

Lexical integrity and blocked modifications

Some nonverbal elements are transparent enough to host rich modification; others are tightly integrated. A modifier is acceptable only if the intended noun-like reading makes sense. Inserting an adjective into گوش دادن or pluralizing دست in idiomatic دست زدن can destroy the intended lexical reading.

تمام راه با دقت به توضیحات راهنما گوش دادیم.

tamâm-e râh bâ deqqat be towzihât-e râhnamâ gush dâdim.

We listened carefully to the guide's explanations the whole way. (neutral standard; manner modifies the predicate externally)

Here با دقت modifies listening as a whole. An invented internal phrase such as گوش دقیق دادن would describe a “precise ear,” not ordinary careful listening.

Idioms can also become ambiguous when the noun is expanded. دست زدن means “touch” with به, or “applaud” in another frame. A phrase about someone's hands may instead receive a literal noun reading. Context, complement choice, and prosody resolve the result.

💡
When internal modification sounds possible, check whether it creates a sensible referential noun. If it does not, modify the entire predicate with an adverbial phrase instead.

Register and discourse effects

Expanded nominal elements are common across registers. Formal prose favors combinations such as بررسی دقیقی انجام دادن and تصمیم نهایی را گرفتن because they package an event as a referential noun. Conversation often prefers a bare compound unless the modifier matters to the story.

— بالاخره تصمیم گرفتی؟ — آره، ولی تصمیم آسونی نبود.

— bâlâkhare tasmim gerefti? — âre, vali tasmim-e âsuni na-bud.

— Did you finally decide? — Yeah, but it wasn't an easy decision. (informal: Tehran; bare predicate followed by a modified referential noun)

The colloquial adjective آسون corresponds to standard آسان. The first تصمیم belongs to تصمیم گرفتن; the second is an independent copular noun phrase. Identical spelling does not guarantee identical syntax.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting indefinite ـی on both the noun and adjective

❌ او تصمیمی سختی گرفت.

Incorrect — the indefinite suffix belongs at the end of this noun-plus-adjective phrase, not on both words.

✅ او در شرایط سخت تصمیم مهمی گرفت.

u dar sharâyet-e sakht tasmim-e mohemmi gereft.

Under difficult conditions, he or she made an important decision.

2. Pluralizing a fixed body-part element

❌ در طول سخنرانی به حرف‌های استاد گوش‌ها دادیم.

Incorrect — گوش دادن ‘listen’ does not pluralize its lexical element گوش.

✅ در طول سخنرانی با دقت به حرف‌های استاد گوش دادیم.

dar tul-e sokhanrâni bâ deqqat be harf-hâ-ye ostâd gush dâdim.

During the lecture, we listened carefully to the professor.

3. Confusing a modified noun with an adverb

⚠️ او کار خوبی کرد.

u kâr-e khubi kard.

Grammatical, but it means ‘he or she did a good deed/action’; it does not mean ‘worked well.’

✅ او با وجود خستگی خیلی خوب کار کرد.

u bâ vojud-e khastegi kheyli khub kâr kard.

Despite being tired, he or she worked very well.

4. Changing the selected light verb after expansion

❌ هیئت‌مدیره چند تصمیم مهم کرد.

Incorrect — modification does not change the lexical predicate تصمیم گرفتن.

✅ هیئت‌مدیره چند تصمیم مهم درباره‌ی بودجه گرفت.

hey'at-modire chand tasmim-e mohem darbâre-ye budje gereft.

The board made several important decisions about the budget.

Key Takeaways

  • The nonverbal element can host ezâfe, adjectives, plurals, determiners, and را when it has genuine noun-like structure.
  • More internal modification produces a more compositional, individuated reading without erasing lexical light-verb selection.
  • کار خوبی کرد / خوب کار کرد contrasts nominal with adverbial modification.
  • Tightly lexicalized elements may resist plural or adjective insertion.
  • Context can distinguish a noun inside a predicate from an independent referential noun.
