Ellipsis of a Shared Light Verb

When two or more coordinated compound predicates use the same light verb with the same inflection, Persian can express that light verb only once: فرم را تکمیل و امضا کردم “I completed and signed the form.” The understood structure contains تکمیل کردم and امضا کردم, but shared کردم appears at the end.

This compression is natural in conversation and especially useful in formal lists. It works only when the omitted verb is easy to recover and the coordinated elements are genuinely parallel. The rule does not license learners to coordinate any two Persian nouns and attach a convenient general verb.

The basic shared-verb pattern

The most transparent cases have one subject, one tense and polarity, one shared object, and two nonverbal elements that both conventionally select the same light verb:

Full parallel predicatesCompressed formWhat is shared
فرم را تکمیل کردم و امضا کردمفرم را تکمیل و امضا کردمکردم
اتاق را مرتب کرد و تمیز کرداتاق را مرتب و تمیز کردکرد
طرح را بررسی کردند و تصویب کردندطرح را بررسی و تصویب کردندکردند

فرم را تکمیل و امضا کردم.

form râ takmil-o emzâ kardam.

I completed and signed the form. (neutral standard; shared کردن)

پیش از تحویل خانه، دیوارها را تعمیر و رنگ کردند.

pish az tahvil-e khâne, divâr-hâ râ ta'mir-o rang kardand.

Before handing over the house, they repaired and painted the walls. (neutral standard; shared subject and object)

هیئت‌مدیره پیشنهاد را بررسی و تصویب کرد.

hey'at-modire pishnehâd râ barrasi-o tasvib kard.

The board reviewed and approved the proposal. (formal; compact coordination)

The final light verb supplies person, tense, aspect, and mood for every coordinated nonverbal element. The construction therefore depends on structural sharing, not merely on avoiding repeated words.

💡
Expand the sentence mentally. If every coordinated element forms a real predicate with the final light verb and the resulting clauses share their inflection, ellipsis is likely available.

Parallelism and recoverability

Good coordination places units of the same kind together. بررسی و تصویب کرد coordinates two nominal elements inside compounds with کردن. مرتب و تمیز کرد coordinates two result expressions with the same causative structure. A listener can restore the omitted verb without changing the meaning or argument frame.

لطفا متن را کوتاه، روشن و یکدست کنید.

lotfan matn râ kutâh, rowshan-o yekdast konid.

Please make the text concise, clear, and consistent. (formal-neutral; three coordinated result expressions)

کارشناس همه‌ی شماره‌ها را ثبت و کنترل کرده است.

kârshenâs hame-ye shomâre-hâ râ sabt-o kontrol karde ast.

The specialist has recorded and checked all the numbers. (formal-neutral; shared present perfect)

Ellipsis becomes harder when the coordinated pieces differ strongly in length or syntactic type. Formal prose sometimes tolerates a long series, but clarity matters more than compression. If the reader must search for the final verb across several clauses, repeat the verb.

The light verb must really be the same

Lexical selection sets a hard limit. Persian says تصمیم گرفتن “decide” but اعلام کردن “announce.” Consequently, تصمیم گرفت و اعلام کرد cannot become تصمیم و اعلام کرد: final کرد would incorrectly create تصمیم کردن.

پس از جلسه تصمیم گرفتیم و نتیجه را اعلام کردیم.

pas az jalase tasmim gereftim va natije râ e'lâm kardim.

After the meeting, we decided and announced the result. (neutral standard; verbs must be repeated because the light verbs differ)

از منظره عکس گرفت و همان لحظه منتشرش کرد.

az manzare aks gereft-o hamân lahze montasher-ash kard.

He or she took a photo of the view and published it immediately. (neutral standard; گرفتن and کردن cannot be shared)

The same restriction applies to near-synonyms. زنگ زدن and تماس گرفتن may both translate “call/contact,” but their light verbs differ. Their English overlap does not create Persian ellipsis.

This follows directly from the light-verb choice and meaning principle: the whole combination is lexical.

Shared arguments—and mismatched frames

A single object can serve both predicates when both select it in the same role: گزارش را بررسی و خلاصه کردم. When complement frames differ, squeezing them into one coordination can obscure which phrase belongs where.

گزارش را خواندم، خلاصه کردم و برای مدیر فرستادم.

gozâresh râ khândam, kholâse kardam-o barâ-ye modir ferestâdam.

I read the report, summarized it, and sent it to the manager. (neutral standard; different simple and compound verbs remain overt)

به شکایت پاسخ دادند و درخواست تازه را بررسی کردند.

be shekâyat pâsokh dâdand-o darkhâst-e tâze râ barrasi kardand.

They responded to the complaint and reviewed the new request. (formal-neutral; different frames and light verbs remain explicit)

Even with the same light verb, separate objects can make repetition clearer: اتاق را تمیز کرد و لباس‌ها را مرتب کرد. The compressed اتاق را تمیز و لباس‌ها را مرتب کرد is possible in carefully balanced prose, but learners should use it only when the parallel structure is unmistakable.

Negation and mixed polarity

A single final negative verb can take scope over the coordinated predicate: گزارش را بررسی و تأیید نکرد normally presents both actions as unrealized in a suitable context. It can nevertheless invite a logical ambiguity between “did neither” and “did not do both.” Repeat the light verb or use نه ... نه ... when the distinction matters.

گزارش را نه بررسی کرد و نه تأیید کرد.

gozâresh râ na barrasi kard-o na ta'yid kard.

He or she neither reviewed nor approved the report. (neutral standard; explicit wide negation)

گزارش را بررسی کرد، اما تأیید نکرد.

gozâresh râ barrasi kard, ammâ ta'yid na-kard.

He or she reviewed the report but did not approve it. (neutral standard; mixed polarity requires two verbs)

Tense and mood must also match. If one event is past and the other future, no single light verb can realize both: امروز بررسی کردم و فردا تأیید خواهم کرد.

Punctuation and register

Two short items normally join with و and no comma: تکمیل و امضا کرد. A series of three or more commonly uses Persian commas between earlier items and و before the last: بررسی، اصلاح و تصویب کرد. A comma alone should not replace the final coordinator in ordinary prose.

دبیر جلسه متن را تنظیم، ویرایش و منتشر کرد.

dabir-e jalase matn râ tanzim, virâyesh-o montasher kard.

The meeting secretary prepared, edited, and published the text. (formal; compact three-item series)

Formal and bureaucratic Persian uses this compression readily because it keeps repeated inflection out of lists. Conversation also permits it, especially with short familiar pairs, though speakers often repeat the light verb for rhythm or emphasis.

— اتاقو مرتب و تمیز کردی؟ — مرتب کردم، ولی هنوز تمیز نکردم.

— otâq-o morattab-o tamiz kardi? — morattab kardam, vali hanuz tamiz na-kardam.

— Did you tidy and clean the room? — I tidied it, but I haven't cleaned it yet. (informal: Tehran; the answer separates the two actions)

💡
Ellipsis is optional. Repeating a light verb is not clumsy when it clarifies polarity, tense, arguments, or contrast.

Common Mistakes

1. Sharing a light verb across incompatible predicates

❌ تصمیم و اعلام کردیم که فردا تعطیل است.

Incorrect — تصمیم selects گرفتن, while اعلام selects کردن.

✅ تصمیم گرفتیم و اعلام کردیم که فردا تعطیل است.

tasmim gereftim-o e'lâm kardim ke fardâ ta'til ast.

We decided and announced that tomorrow is a holiday.

2. Hiding a polarity contrast under one final verb

⚠️ درخواست را بررسی و قبول نکردم.

darkhâst râ barrasi-o qabul na-kardam.

Grammatical but scope-ambiguous: it can suggest that neither action happened or merely that both did not; repeat کردم to state a positive review followed by nonacceptance.

✅ درخواست را بررسی کردم، اما قبول نکردم.

darkhâst râ barrasi kardam, ammâ qabul na-kardam.

I reviewed the request but did not accept it.

3. Coordinating mismatched argument frames

❌ به نامه و پرونده را پاسخ و بررسی کردیم.

Incorrect — پاسخ دادن takes به, while بررسی کردن takes a direct object.

✅ به نامه پاسخ دادیم و پرونده را بررسی کردیم.

be nâme pâsokh dâdim-o parvande râ barrasi kardim.

We answered the letter and reviewed the file.

4. Treating punctuation as the coordinator

❌ مدیر طرح را بررسی، تصویب کرد.

Incorrect ordinary punctuation — two coordinated items require و.

✅ مدیر طرح را بررسی و تصویب کرد.

modir tarh râ barrasi-o tasvib kard.

The manager reviewed and approved the plan.

Key Takeaways

  • Parallel nonverbal elements may share one final light verb with one tense, polarity, and agreement value.
  • Mental expansion must produce established predicates with the same light verb.
  • Shared arguments make ellipsis easiest; mismatched frames favor repetition.
  • Repeat the verb when polarity, tense, or scope differs.
  • Use و between two items and commas plus final و in longer formal series.
