Persian coordination can leave a repeated verb unspoken when the missing material is easy to recover. کاوه چای سفارش داد و من قهوه means “Kaveh ordered tea and I [ordered] coffee.” Compound predicates create another frequent pattern: اتاق را مرتب و میز را تمیز کردم, where final کردم completes both مرتب کردن and تمیز کردن.
Ellipsis is not random deletion. The coordinated parts must be structurally parallel enough for the hearer to reconstruct the missing predicate, including its tense, polarity, person, and lexical light verb. When reconstruction competes with another reading, repetition is better Persian.
Three useful coordination patterns
Surface “verb omission” covers several related patterns. Linguists analyze their syntax differently, but learners can distinguish them by what remains overt.
| Pattern | Persian shape | What is understood |
|---|---|---|
| gapping | کاوه چای سفارش داد و من قهوه | the second clause lacks سفارش دادم |
| shared final light verb | اتاق را مرتب و میز را تمیز کردم | کردم completes both compound predicates |
| shared perfect auxiliary | فرم را پر کرده و فرستادهام | ـام supplies perfect person to both participles |
کاوه چای سفارش داد و من قهوه.
Kâve chây sefâresh dâd va man ghahve.
Kaveh ordered tea and I ordered coffee.
صبح اتاق را مرتب و میز کارم را تمیز کردم.
sobh otâgh râ morattab va miz-e kâr-am râ tamiz kardam.
In the morning I tidied the room and cleaned my desk.
درخواست را خوانده و برای مدیر فرستادهام.
darkhâst râ khânde va barâ-ye modir ferestâde-am.
I have read the request and sent it to the director.
The first omits an entire finite predicate in the second coordinate. The second places a single light verb at the right edge. The third gives each event its own participle but lets one final perfect copula apply to both.
Gapping needs contrasting remnants
In gapping, the second coordinate retains elements that contrast with corresponding elements in the first: کاوه / من and چای / قهوه. Those two contrasts make the missing predicate recoverable. A lone noun may instead be understood as part of the first clause.
مریم نسخهی فارسی را خواند و ناهید نسخهی انگلیسی را.
Maryam noskhe-ye fârsi râ khând va Nâhid noskhe-ye englisi râ.
Maryam read the Persian version, and Nahid the English version.
مریم نسخهی فارسی و نسخهی انگلیسی را خواند.
Maryam noskhe-ye fârsi va noskhe-ye englisi râ khând.
Maryam read the Persian and the English versions.
The first has two subjects and two objects, so a second reading of خواند is reconstructed. The second simply coordinates two objects under one overt subject and verb. Word order and را placement guide the parse.
Gapping is natural when the comparison is compact and contrastive. In long prose with several possible antecedents, repeating the verb reduces processing effort and is often stylistically better.
آرمان هزینهی اقامت را پرداخت کرد؛ شرکت، هزینهی رفتوآمد را.
Ârmân hazine-ye eghâmat râ pardâkht kard; sherkat, hazine-ye raft-o-âmad râ.
Arman paid the accommodation costs; the company, the travel costs. (concise written style)
The semicolon separates two substantial coordinates, and the comma after شرکت helps signal the missing predicate. Punctuation supports an available structure; it cannot rescue an unrecoverable one.
Sharing a light verb at the right edge
Because many Persian predicates share کردن, a final finite form can complete two coordinated nonverbal elements. Each element must independently form an established predicate with that light verb.
ویراستار مقدمه را کوتاه و نتیجهگیری را روشنتر کرد.
virâstâr moghaddame râ kutâh va natije-giri râ rowshan-tar kard.
The editor shortened the introduction and made the conclusion clearer.
Here کوتاه کردن and روشنتر کردن are both natural causative predicates. Final کرد carries past tense and third-singular agreement for the shared subject.
Different subjects are possible when agreement is compatible:
مریم اتاق را مرتب و نوید ظرفها را جمع کرد.
Maryam otâgh râ morattab va Navid zarf-hâ râ jam' kard.
Maryam tidied the room, and Navid gathered up the dishes.
Both subjects are third-person singular, so final کرد fits each coordinate. With من and آنها, one final agreeing form could not simultaneously mean کردم and کردند; repeat the verbs.
The shared light verb is licensed lexically, not by the English translation. عکس گرفتن “take a photo” and صحبت کردن “talk” cannot share a final کرد because *عکس کردن is not the intended predicate.
Sharing perfect and past-perfect auxiliaries
Coordinated participles can share a final present copula or past auxiliary when person, number, tense, and polarity match.
پزشک بیمار را معاینه کرده و نسخه را نوشته است.
pezeshk bimâr râ mo'âyene karde va noskhe râ neveshte ast.
The doctor has examined the patient and written the prescription.
وقتی رسیدیم، سارا شام را پخته و میز را چیده بود.
vaghti residim, Sârâ shâm râ pokhte va miz râ chide bud.
When we arrived, Sara had cooked dinner and set the table.
In each sentence, the final auxiliary applies to two parallel participles with one subject. Repeating است or بود is grammatical but heavier.
Two different subjects can share a final auxiliary only when its agreement suits both:
تا ظهر، فرهاد به دفتر آمده و سارا به جلسه رفته بود.
tâ zohr, Farhâd be daftar âmade va Sârâ be jalase rafte bud.
By noon, Farhad had come to the office and Sara had gone to the meeting.
Both are third-person singular. If the first subject were من, the standard sentence would require آمده بودم separately. Agreement outranks the desire for concision.
For the full participle-plus-copula structure, review present perfect formation.
Polarity, voice, and tense must be recoverable
Ellipsis works best when the coordinates share polarity and temporal viewpoint. If the first event is affirmative and the second negative, or if one is past and the other future, the missing material becomes harder or impossible to reconstruct.
من فرم را امضا کردم، ولی سارا امضا نکرد.
man form râ emzâ kardam, vali Sârâ emzâ na-kard.
I signed the form, but Sara did not.
The contrastive negative verb is repeated because its polarity is new information. Persian can omit a larger predicate in specialized contexts, but a B1 learner should keep overt material when the listener would otherwise have to guess a negation, modal, or voice change.
A short exchange
لیلا پرسید: «کارها را چطور تقسیم کردید؟» امیر گفت: «من متن را نوشتم و نازنین جدولها را؛ بعد هم هر دو بازبینی کردیم.»
Leylâ porsid: «kâr-hâ râ chetor taghsim kardid?» Amir goft: «man matn râ neveshtam va Nâzanin jadval-hâ râ; ba'd ham har do bâzbini kardim.»
Leila asked, “How did you divide the tasks?” Amir said, “I wrote the text and Nazanin the tables; then we both reviewed everything.”
The first coordination contrasts writer and object, making omitted نوشت recoverable. The final plural کردیم has an overt plural subject هر دو and starts a new event; it is not part of the ellipsis.
Common Mistakes
Sharing a light verb that does not belong to both predicates
❌ مریم از منظره عکس و با استاد صحبت کرد.
Incorrect intended sharing — عکس requires گرفتن for ‘take a photo,’ while صحبت takes کردن.
✅ مریم از منظره عکس گرفت و با استاد صحبت کرد.
✅ Maryam az manzare aks gereft va bâ ostâd sohbat kard.
Maryam took a photo of the view and spoke with the professor.
Sharing an auxiliary across incompatible agreement
❌ من آمده و آنها رفته بودند.
Incorrect as a shared past perfect — بودند cannot supply first-singular agreement to من.
✅ من آمده بودم و آنها رفته بودند.
✅ man âmade budam va ân-hâ rafte budand.
I had arrived, and they had left.
Omitting a verb when tense changes
❌ من دیروز گزارش دادم و سارا فردا نتیجه را.
Incorrect — the second coordinate requires a future verb that cannot be recovered from دادم.
✅ من دیروز گزارش دادم و سارا فردا نتیجه را اعلام میکند.
✅ man diruz gozâresh dâdam va Sârâ fardâ natije râ e'lâm mi-konad.
I reported yesterday, and Sara will announce the result tomorrow.
Omitting the only finite predicate
❌ چون مریم کتاب را و ناهید مجله را.
Incorrect — no coordinate contains an overt finite predicate from which a verb can be recovered.
✅ مریم کتاب را خواند و ناهید مجله را.
✅ Maryam ketâb râ khând va Nâhid majalle râ.
Maryam read the book, and Nahid the magazine.
Key Takeaways
- Ellipsis requires a recoverable predicate and clear parallel contrasts.
- A final light verb may complete two established compounds, but lexical light-verb choice must match both.
- Coordinated perfect participles can share one copula or auxiliary when agreement, tense, and polarity match.
- Punctuation guides parsing; it does not license missing material by itself.
- Repeat the verb whenever tense, polarity, voice, agreement, or interpretation changes.
