Auxiliary and Copula Omission

Persian sometimes leaves a copula or perfect auxiliary unspoken, but several different phenomena hide behind that description. In رفته “he/she has gone” (informal: Tehran), third-singular perfect است is absent. In اتاق روشن و گرم است, one final copula is shared by two predicates. In a headline such as بازار ارز همچنان آرام, the telegraphic genre licenses a bare predicate. These are not one free rule deleting every form of “be.”

The decisive questions are register, recoverability, and grammatical information. If the missing form alone carries person, tense, polarity, or contrast, omission is usually impossible in a complete neutral sentence.

نیما رفته؛ کلید رو روی میز گذاشته.

Nimâ rafte; kelid ro ru-ye miz gozâshte.

Nima has left; he put the key on the table. (informal: Tehran; third-singular perfect است omitted)

راهرو خلوت و کاملا تاریک است.

râhro khalvat va kâmelan târik ast.

The hallway is quiet and completely dark.

The first sentence is colloquial and contains two bare participles with recoverable third-singular است. The second is written standard; final است is overt once and applies to both coordinated adjectives.

💡
First decide whether a form is truly absent. خوبه contains the colloquial copula ـه, and خسته‌ام contains first-singular ـام. Neither is a zero-copula sentence.

Third-singular perfect in conversation

Standard present perfect uses a participle plus a present copula: رفته است، رسیده است، تمام شده است. In everyday Tehran speech, third-singular است is routinely omitted, leaving the participle. Time adverbs and context distinguish the perfect from an adjective or a clause fragment.

هنوز تاکسی نرسیده؛ دوباره زنگ بزن.

hanuz tâksi na-reside; dobâre zang be-zan.

The taxi still hasn't arrived; call again. (informal: Tehran)

فکر کنم جلسه تموم شده.

fekr konam jalase tamum shode.

I think the meeting has finished. (informal: Tehran)

In edited standard Persian, write نرسیده است and تمام شده است. The omission is a register feature, not a new tense.

Other persons behave differently. Colloquial رفته‌ام may contract to رفتم, but this is fusion and vowel loss, not simple deletion of all person marking. The resulting string can resemble simple past and relies on stress and context. At B1, use the full standard forms in writing.

تا حالا این مسیر رو نرفتم.

tâ hâlâ in masir ro na-raftam.

I haven't taken this route before. (informal: Tehran; contracted first-singular perfect)

The life-experience phrase تا حالا supports the perfect reading. Without it, نرفتم can be the ordinary simple past “I didn't go.”

Sharing an auxiliary in coordinated perfects

Standard Persian often keeps a single copula or auxiliary at the right edge of coordinated participles. It supplies the same person, number, tense, and polarity to each conjunct.

مدیر نامه را خوانده، امضا کرده و برای بایگانی فرستاده است.

modir nâme râ khânde, emzâ karde va barâ-ye bâyegâni ferestâde ast.

The director has read, signed, and sent the letter for filing.

پیش از رسیدن ما، برق قطع و ساختمان تخلیه شده بود.

pish az residan-e mâ, bargh ghat' va sâkhtemân takhliye shode bud.

Before we arrived, the power had been cut and the building had been evacuated.

The first final است applies to three participles with one subject. In the second, final شده بود participates in two passive/change predicates: قطع شده بود and تخلیه شده بود. Concision is possible because both clauses are third-singular past perfect and context supplies the same passive auxiliary.

Agreement can block sharing. A final بودند cannot serve a first-singular conjunct, and ـام cannot serve a third-plural one. Changed polarity also normally calls for repetition.

من آماده شده بودم، اما آن‌ها هنوز نرسیده بودند.

man âmâde shode budam, ammâ ân-hâ hanuz na-reside budand.

I had gotten ready, but they still had not arrived.

This sentence keeps both auxiliaries because person, number, and polarity differ. The broader coordination pattern appears on verb ellipsis in coordination.

Sharing a copula across predicates

One subject can have several coordinated noun or adjective predicates under one final copula. This is fully standard, not restricted to colloquial speech.

این روش سریع، کم‌هزینه و قابل اعتماد است.

in ravesh sari', kam-hazine va ghâbel-e e'temâd ast.

This method is fast, inexpensive, and reliable.

برادرم پزشک و خواهرم پرستار است.

barâdar-am pezeshk va khâhar-am parastâr ast.

My brother is a doctor, and my sister is a nurse.

The second example has two third-singular subjects, so final است can be understood with both. If the subjects require different copulas, repeat them: من پزشکم و خواهرم پرستار است. The form must match every place where it is interpreted.

💡
Right-edge sharing is not the same as deleting a required copula everywhere. A visible final form anchors the coordination and supplies features to each parallel predicate.

Headlines and labels

News headlines, signs, captions, and notes favor compressed nominal structures. A headline may omit predictable third-singular است after a present predicate.

بازار مسکن در آخرین روز هفته آرام

bâzâr-e maskan dar âkharin ruz-e hafte ârâm

Housing market calm on the last day of the week. (headline)

ورود افراد غیرمسئول ممنوع

vorud-e afrâd-e gheyr-e mas'ul mamnu'

Unauthorized entry prohibited. (sign/notice)

These are acceptable because the genre supplies a telegraphic frame. In running prose, write بازار ... آرام است and ورود ... ممنوع است.

Some headlines are nominalizations rather than finite clauses with one missing copula: افتتاح نمایشگاه کتاب در تهران “Opening of the book fair in Tehran.” Adding است would not recreate the intended event report; the headline names an event. Therefore do not treat every verbless headline as evidence that Persian generally drops “be.”

افتتاح نمایشگاه صنایع دستی در شیراز

eftetâh-e namâyeshgâh-e sanâye'-e dasti dar Shirâz

Opening of the handicrafts exhibition in Shiraz. (nominal headline)

Reduced copulas are not omission

In (informal: Tehran) speech, standard است often appears as ـه after a predicate: هوا سرده “the weather is cold.” Other persons retain endings such as ـم، ـی، ـیم، ـین، ـن. Calling all of these “copula deletion” hides the agreement that remains audible.

امروز هوا ابریه، ولی خیابونا خلوتن.

emruz havâ abri-ye, vali khiyâbunâ khalvat-an.

The weather's cloudy today, but the streets are quiet. (informal: Tehran; reduced copulas)

Standard Persian has ابری است and خیابان‌ها خلوت‌اند. Both colloquial predicates still contain copular material.

When omission is impossible

Keep an overt form when it carries information that cannot be recovered elsewhere:

  • non-third-person agreement in a complete neutral assertion: من خسته‌ام, not bare من خسته;
  • past tense: اتاق سرد بود, not bare اتاق سرد for “was cold”;
  • negative copula: آماده نیست, because نیست carries negation;
  • existential or contrastive هست: وقت هست, “there is time”;
  • mismatched coordinated subjects, tenses, or polarity.

من خسته‌ام، ولی شما هنوز پرانرژی هستید.

man khaste-am, vali shomâ hanuz por-enerzhi hastid.

I'm tired, but you're still energetic.

Here both forms identify their subjects. Omitting them would leave a pair of fragments rather than a neutral complete contrast.

Common Mistakes

Treating a reduced copula as zero

❌ خوبه

without a copula

Incorrect analysis — final ـه is a third-singular copula, not zero.

✅ این غذا هنوز گرمه.

✅ in ghazâ hanuz garm-e.

This food is still warm. (informal: Tehran; reduced copula ـه)

Omitting agreement in a standard assertion

❌ ما برای حرکت آماده.

Incorrect as a neutral complete sentence — first-plural agreement must be expressed.

✅ ما برای حرکت کاملا آماده‌ایم.

✅ mâ barâ-ye harekat kâmelan âmâde-im.

We are completely ready to leave.

Sharing one auxiliary across mismatched persons

❌ من برگشته و دوستانم رفته‌اند.

Incorrect as a shared perfect — ـاند cannot supply first-singular agreement to من.

✅ من برگشته‌ام و دوستانم رفته‌اند.

✅ man bar-gashte-am va dustân-am rafte-and.

I have returned, and my friends have left.

Omitting the negative copula

❌ این نسخه کامل نه.

Incorrect in a standard declarative clause — Persian requires نیست for the negative copula.

✅ این نسخه هنوز کامل نیست.

✅ in noskhe hanuz kâmel nist.

This version is not complete yet.

Key Takeaways

  • Informal third-singular perfects commonly omit است: رفته، نرسیده، تمام شده.
  • A final copula or auxiliary can serve parallel coordinated predicates when all grammatical features match.
  • Headlines and signs license special telegraphic structures that running prose does not.
  • Colloquial ـه and personal copular endings are reduced forms, not absence.
  • Keep the copula or auxiliary when it carries unrecoverable agreement, tense, negation, existence, or contrast.
