Persian can describe a current condition directly—در باز است “the door is open”—or present the change that produced it—در باز شده است “the door has opened / has been opened.” Both may be true in the same situation, but they answer different questions: What condition holds? versus What has happened?
English often hides this contrast because be + participle can express either a state or a passive event: the door is closed. Persian offers clearer alternatives, yet it also has genuine ambiguities. The learner must combine morphology, lexical meaning, agent phrases, and discourse context.
The basic contrast
An adjective or adjectival participle plus the present copula simply predicates a property. Adding perfect شده است introduces a transition into that property and connects it to the current viewpoint.
| Structure | Example | Default focus |
|---|---|---|
| lexical adjective + copula | در باز است | current state; no opening event asserted |
| adjectival participle + copula | در بسته است | current result state; closer is not profiled |
| property + perfect of شدن | در باز شده است | change into a state, with current relevance |
| passive base + perfect of شدن | در بسته شده است | closing event and its result; possible external actor |
نگران نباش؛ در حیاط باز است.
negarân na-bâsh; dar-e hayât bâz ast.
Don't worry; the courtyard door is open. (neutral conversation; state only)
در حیاط با وزش باد باز شده است.
dar-e hayât bâ vazesh-e bâd bâz shode ast.
The courtyard door has opened in the wind. (neutral standard; inchoative event with present result)
در پشتی طبق دستور نگهبان بسته شده است.
dar-e poshti tebq-e dastur-e negahbân baste shode ast.
The back door has been closed on the guard's instructions. (formal-neutral; passive event plus result)
Lexical adjectives do not contain a hidden event
Words such as باز، خاموش، آماده، خالی، خیس are ordinary adjectives. With است, they describe a state. With شده است, they form the present perfect of an intransitive change-of-state predicate: “has become open/off/ready/empty/wet.”
اتاق جلسه آماده است و میتوانید وارد شوید.
otâq-e jalase âmâde ast-o mi-tavânid vâred shavid.
The meeting room is ready, and you may enter. (formal-neutral; lexical adjective)
اتاق جلسه زودتر از انتظار آماده شده است.
otâq-e jalase zud-tar az entezâr âmâde shode ast.
The meeting room has become ready earlier than expected. (formal-neutral; completed transition)
چراغ راهرو خاموش است، ولی چراغ پلهها روشن است.
cherâgh-e râhro khâmush ast, vali cherâgh-e pelle-hâ rowshan ast.
The hallway light is off, but the stairway light is on. (neutral standard; contrasting states)
چراغ راهرو دوباره خاموش شده است.
cherâgh-e râhro do-bâre khâmush shode ast.
The hallway light has gone out again. (neutral standard; repeated change with current result)
The adverb دوباره favors an event reading because it counts recurrence of a transition. Degree modification such as کاملا آماده است and coordination with another adjective favor property structure.
Participial adjectives describe a result
Forms such as بسته، شکسته، پخته، نوشته originate as past participles, but they can function adjectivally. A participial state implies some prior cause conceptually, yet the clause need not assert a particular event or actor.
پنجره شکسته است؛ نزدیکش نرو.
panjare shekaste ast; nazdik-ash na-rav.
The window is broken; don't go near it. (neutral conversation; result state)
پنجره در جریان اسبابکشی شکسته شده است.
panjare dar jarayân-e asbâb-keshi shekaste shode ast.
The window has been broken during the move. (formal-neutral; event explicitly located)
The second string contains two participial layers: lexical شکسته plus شده, followed by the present copula. In context, شکسته شدن may be understood as an intransitive break or a passive; only an expressed cause or actor makes the analysis more specific.
More adjectival behavior is covered on Participial Adjectives.
Passive event or spontaneous change?
Persian شدن is both a change-of-state verb and the productive passive auxiliary. Therefore پنجره باز شده است can mean that the window opened, perhaps because of wind, or that someone opened it. An agent-oriented phrase favors passive analysis; a natural cause favors inchoative analysis.
پنجره توسط مأمور آتشنشانی باز شده است.
panjare tavassot-e ma'mur-e âtash-neshâni bâz shode ast.
The window has been opened by the firefighter. (formal; explicit passive agent)
پنجره بر اثر اختلاف دما ترک خورده است.
panjare bar asar-e ekhtelâf-e damâ tarak khorde ast.
The window has cracked because of the temperature difference. (formal-neutral; spontaneous change, no agent)
Formal توسط is possible when an actor truly matters. Ordinary Persian often prefers an active clause—مأمور پنجره را باز کرده است—rather than a heavy passive agent phrase. The absence of an agent never proves a passive reading; suppression of the actor is precisely what passives commonly do.
Diagnostics, not mechanical tests
Several cues help, but no single cue solves every case:
- همین الان، دوباره، دیروز، در جریان تعمیرات locate or count an event and favor شده است.
- توسط + actor strongly favors a passive event (formal).
- هنوز، کاملا، همچنان readily describe a persistent state, though they can also modify a resulting perfect.
- a command based on current conditions—“the door is open, so close it”—usually needs the simple property predicate.
- an explanation of a new situation—“the road has closed because of snow”—normally profiles change or result with شده است.
جاده هنوز باز است، اما گردنه بهتازگی بسته شده است.
jâdde hanuz bâz ast, ammâ gardane be-tâzegi baste shode ast.
The road is still open, but the mountain pass has recently been closed. (formal-neutral; state versus new event/result)
This minimal contrast shows why English is closed can be misleading. Persian بسته است foregrounds the closed condition; بسته شده است foregrounds the closing transition and often receives English has been closed.
Agreement and colloquial speech
Adjectives and participles themselves do not agree for gender or number. The copula or شدن carries verbal agreement. Human plurals normally take plural forms. Inanimate plurals may take singular collective agreement in formal Persian or plural agreement when treated as separate items.
همهی خروجیها بسته است و مسافران منتظر ماندهاند.
hame-ye khoruji-hâ baste ast-o mosâferân montazer mânde-and.
All the exits are closed, and the passengers have remained waiting. (formal-neutral; collective singular with inanimate plural, plural with humans)
In Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), third-singular است is often omitted: در بازه؟ uses colloquial copula ـه, while perfect باز شده؟ may omit standard است after the participle.
— پنجره بازه؟ — نه، انگار گیر کرده.
— panjare bâze? — na, engâr gir karde.
— Is the window open? — No, it seems to be stuck. (informal, regional: Tehran; state predicates)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English copula position
❌ اتاق است آماده برای جلسه.
Incorrect — a Persian predicate adjective normally precedes its copula; English ‘the room is ready’ cannot be copied word for word.
✅ بفرمایید وارد شوید؛ اتاق برای جلسه آماده است.
be-farmâyid vâred shavid; otâq barâ-ye jalase âmâde ast.
Please come in; the room is ready for the meeting.
2. Omitting شدن when reporting a new transition
❌ دیشب جاده بهخاطر برف بسته است.
Incorrect for the intended event report — the dated closing requires a finite change or passive construction.
✅ دیشب جاده بهخاطر برف بسته شد.
dishab jâdde be-khâter-e barf baste shod.
Last night the road was closed because of snow.
3. Treating every شدن clause as passive
❌ هوا سرد شده است توسط زمستان.
Incorrect — سرد شدن is an intransitive change of state, and a season is not introduced as a passive agent with توسط.
✅ بعد از غروب هوا ناگهان سرد شده است.
ba'd az ghorub havâ nâgahân sard shode ast.
After sunset, the weather has suddenly turned cold.
4. Making the adjective agree with a plural noun
❌ پنجرهها بازها هستند.
if بازها is deliberately substantivized as ‘the open ones’ rather than inflected to agree with پنجرهها
Incorrect for ordinary adjective agreement — Persian predicate adjectives do not take a plural suffix to agree with their subject.
✅ پنجرههای طبقهی بالا باز هستند.
panjare-hâ-ye tabaqe-ye bâlâ bâz hastand.
The upstairs windows are open. (plural agreement appears on the copula, not the adjective)
Key Takeaways
- باز است predicates a present property; باز شده است presents a prior transition with present relevance.
- Participles such as بسته and شکسته can function as result-state adjectives without asserting a particular event.
- شدن can mark spontaneous change or passive voice; context and agent/cause phrases distinguish them.
- Event-time expressions and توسط favor event readings, while degree and condition contexts favor state readings.
- Persian adjectives and participles are invariant; verbal agreement belongs to the copula or شدن.
