Light-Verb Choice and Meaning Change

Changing a Persian light verb can change who participates, how the event unfolds, or the lexical meaning itself. فریب دادن means “deceive,” while فریب خوردن means “be deceived”; پیدا کردن is “find,” while پیدا شدن is “turn up/be found.” The shared nonverbal element is only part of the predicate.

There are useful tendencies: کردن and دادن often introduce an external initiator, شدن often marks change, خوردن often profiles an affected participant, and گرفتن often marks acquisition or inception. Yet these tendencies do not generate vocabulary automatically. Conventional pairing can reinforce, narrow, or override the literal meaning of the light verb.

What the major light verbs tend to contribute

Light verbFrequent contributionExamplesWarning
کردنactivity, causation, performanceتمیز کردن، بررسی کردنnot universal “do/make”
دادنtransfer, causing an effect outwardخبر دادن، تکان دادنnot freely replaceable by کردن
گرفتنacquisition, adoption, onsetاجازه گرفتن، تصمیم گرفتنthe source frame is lexical
خوردنundergoing contact, impact, or adverse resultضربه خوردن، فریب خوردنnot literal eating
شدنbecoming, inchoative or passive-like eventآماده شدن، پیدا شدنnot the pair of every کردن compound

The whole predicate contributes the final meaning. تصمیم گرفتن is conventional “decide”; replacing گرفتن with کردن does not create a stylistic variant. Conversely, تلفن کردن and تلفن زدن can overlap in the meaning “telephone,” but that overlap is a lexical fact about those combinations, not a general license to alternate کردن and زدن. Begin from the architecture of compound verbs as single lexical predicates.

بعد از مقایسه‌ی سه گزینه تصمیم گرفتیم قرارداد را تمدید نکنیم.

ba'd az moqâyese-ye se gozine tasmim gereftim qarârdâd râ tamdid nakonim.

After comparing three options, we decided not to extend the contract. (neutral standard; lexical گرفتن compound)

💡
Semantic tendencies help you remember established predicates; they do not authorize new ones. Verify the whole combination in a dictionary or reliable corpus before producing it.

Initiator versus affected participant

Several robust pairs reverse perspective. In فریب دادن, the subject causes someone to adopt a false belief; in فریب خوردن, the subject undergoes that result. شکست دادن / شکست خوردن similarly express defeating and being defeated. These are lexical voice pairs, but خوردن is not a general passive auxiliary.

فروشنده با توضیحات مبهم چند خریدار را فریب داد.

forushande bâ towzihât-e mobham chand kharidâr râ farib dâd.

The seller deceived several buyers with vague explanations. (neutral standard; initiator perspective)

خریداران این بار فریب تبلیغ دروغین را نخوردند.

kharidârân in bâr farib-e tabligh-e dorughin râ nakhordand.

This time the buyers were not fooled by the deceptive advertisement. (neutral standard; affected perspective)

تیم میزبان حریف باتجربه را با یک گل شکست داد.

tim-e mizbân harif-e bâ-tajrobe râ bâ yek gol shekast dâd.

The home team defeated the experienced opponent by one goal. (neutral standard)

حریف تا دقیقه‌ی آخر جنگید، اما در وقت اضافه شکست خورد.

harif tâ daqiqe-ye âkhar jangid, ammâ dar vaqt-e ezâfe shekast khord.

The opponent fought until the final minute but lost in extra time. (neutral standard)

The affected reading of خوردن is especially common with unwanted contact, impact, or setback: ضربه خوردن “suffer a blow,” گلوله خوردن “be shot,” شکست خوردن “be defeated.” It consistently profiles the participant that undergoes the event, but it is not a general-purpose passive.

Discovery, emergence, and change

پیدا کردن selects a finder and a found object; پیدا شدن places the thing that turns up as subject. تغییر دادن means “change something,” while intransitive تغییر کردن means “change.” Notice that the intransitive partner here is کردن, not شدن: lexicalization prevents a single universal valency template.

کارشناس علت اصلی خطا را در گزارش قدیمی پیدا کرد.

kârshenâs ellat-e asli-ye khatâ râ dar gozâresh-e qadimi peydâ kard.

The specialist found the main cause of the error in an old report. (neutral standard)

کلید یدکی زیر صندلی عقب پیدا شد.

kelid-e yadaki zir-e sandali-ye aqab peydâ shod.

The spare key turned up under the back seat. (neutral standard)

شهرداری مسیر اتوبوس را از هفته‌ی آینده تغییر می‌دهد.

shahrdâri masir-e otobus râ az hafte-ye âyande taghyir mi-dahad.

The municipality will change the bus route starting next week. (formal-neutral; transitive تغییر دادن)

ساعت حرکت قطار چند بار تغییر کرد.

sâ'at-e harekat-e qatâr chand bâr taghyir kard.

The train's departure time changed several times. (neutral standard; lexical intransitive تغییر کردن)

This apparent irregularity is exactly why the complete infinitive matters. General argument-structure tendencies explain much, but the Persian lexicon determines which light verb realizes each member.

💡
Do not reduce all intransitive change to شدن. Learn actual pairs: پیدا کردن / پیدا شدن, but تغییر دادن / تغییر کردن.

Acquisition and onset with گرفتن

گرفتن can profile gaining a transferable item or entering a conventional state: اجازه گرفتن “obtain permission,” تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” تماس گرفتن “make contact.” The “acquisition” idea is often abstract and should not be translated word for word.

برای فیلم‌برداری داخل موزه از قبل اجازه گرفتند.

barâ-ye film-bardâri dâkhel-e muze az qabl ejâze gereftand.

They obtained permission in advance to film inside the museum. (neutral formal)

— به تعمیرگاه زنگ زدی؟ — بله، تماس گرفتم و برای فردا وقت گرفتم.

— be ta'mirgâh zang zadi? — bale, tamâs gereftam va barâ-ye fardâ vaqt gereftam.

— Did you call the repair shop? — Yes, I contacted them and booked an appointment for tomorrow. (neutral conversation; several lexical choices)

Overlap, register, and lexical convention

Some alternatives share a broad English translation but differ in frequency or style. زنگ زدن is the everyday default “call by phone”; تلفن کردن is neutral but less colloquial in some contexts; تماس گرفتن با is neutral-formal “contact.” None is wrong simply because another is more frequent. Register alternatives should be shown as separate correct forms, not corrected with ❌.

Common Mistakes

1. Using کردن in a fixed affected-participant predicate

❌ تیم مهمان در نیمه‌ی دوم شکست کرد.

Incorrect — ‘be defeated/lose’ is شکست خوردن.

✅ تیم مهمان در نیمه‌ی دوم سه گل خورد و شکست خورد.

tim-e mehmân dar nime-ye dovvom se gol khord va shekast khord.

The visiting team conceded three goals in the second half and lost.

2. Treating خوردن literally

❌ او فریب را خوردن کرد.

Incorrect — فریب خوردن is a stored predicate ‘be deceived’; خوردن cannot itself be inserted as a noun before کردن.

✅ او به پیام جعلی اعتماد کرد و فریب خورد.

u be payâm-e ja'li e'temâd kard va farib khord.

He or she trusted the fake message and was deceived.

3. Giving تغییر the wrong intransitive partner

❌ برنامه‌ی حرکت اتوبوس را تغییر شد.

Incorrect — intransitive تغییر کردن takes the changing schedule as subject, not a را-marked object with شدن.

✅ برنامه‌ی حرکت اتوبوس از اول مهر تغییر می‌کند.

barnâme-ye harekat-e otobus az avval-e Mehr taghyir mi-konad.

The bus timetable changes from the first of Mehr.

4. Inventing a light-verb synonym

❌ پس از جلسه تصمیم دادیم که صبر کنیم.

Incorrect — the ordinary predicate for deciding is تصمیم گرفتن.

✅ پس از جلسه تصمیم گرفتیم تا هفته‌ی بعد صبر کنیم.

pas az jalase tasmim gereftim tâ hafte-ye ba'd sabr konim.

After the meeting, we decided to wait until the following week.
