Light داشتن commonly presents a continuing relation, disposition, need, or attitude: علاقه داشتن “be interested,” اعتماد داشتن “have trust,” نیاز داشتن “need.” Light کردن more readily builds a deliberate activity or bounded intervention: بررسی کردن “examine,” تمرین کردن “practice,” استفاده کردن “use.” The contrast is a tendency in event structure, not permission to exchange the two verbs freely.
English often uses a simple verb for both kinds: trust, need, study, use. Persian asks whether the subject holds a state, performs an activity, or enters a new state. A learner must therefore store the complete predicate and its argument frame, not translate the English verb alone.
State, activity, and change
| Semantic profile | Persian predicate | Typical frame | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| continuing attitude | علاقه داشتن | به چیزی علاقه داشتن | be interested in |
| continuing relation | اعتماد داشتن | به کسی اعتماد داشتن | trust someone |
| requirement/state | نیاز داشتن | به چیزی نیاز داشتن | need something |
| directed activity | توجه کردن | به چیزی توجه کردن | pay attention to / notice |
| deliberate activity | تمرین کردن | چیزی را تمرین کردن | practice something |
| entry into a state | علاقهمند شدن | به چیزی علاقهمند شدن | become interested in |
داشتن does not merely signal “long duration,” and کردن does not merely signal “short duration.” A state can last briefly and an activity can continue for years. The distinction is how the situation is conceptualized: as holding a relation or property, versus doing something that unfolds or can be deliberately initiated.
از نوجوانی به معماری سنتی ایران علاقه داشتهام.
az nowjavâni be me'mâri-ye sonnati-ye Irân alâqe dâshte-am.
I have been interested in Iran's traditional architecture since adolescence. (neutral standard; continuing attitude)
برای سخنرانی فردا تمام عصر تمرین کردم.
barâ-ye sokhanrâni-ye fardâ tamâm-e asr tamrin kardam.
I practiced all afternoon for tomorrow's presentation. (neutral standard; deliberate activity)
علاقه داشتن, علاقهمند بودن, and علاقهمند شدن
به چیزی علاقه داشتن and به چیزی علاقهمند بودن both describe an existing interest. The former is neutral across speech and writing; the latter is slightly more adjectival and often (formal-neutral). علاقهمند شدن marks the onset of that interest—“become interested.” علاقهمند کردن is transitive “make someone interested,” and therefore introduces a causer and an affected object.
در دانشگاه به زبانشناسی تاریخی علاقهمند شدم.
dar dâneshgâh be zabân-shenâsi-ye târikhi alâqe-mand shodam.
At university I became interested in historical linguistics. (neutral standard; change of state)
شیوهی روایت کتاب بسیاری از نوجوانان را به تاریخ علاقهمند کرد.
shive-ye revâyat-e ketâb besyâri az nowjavânân râ be târikh alâqe-mand kard.
The book's narrative style made many teenagers interested in history. (neutral standard; caused change)
حالا به موضوع علاقه دارم، اما در آغاز دوره هیچ شناختی از آن نداشتم.
hâlâ be mowzu' alâqe dâram, ammâ dar âghâz-e dowre hich shenâkht-i az ân nadâshtam.
I am interested in the subject now, but at the start of the course I knew nothing about it. (neutral conversation; present state)
These predicates are not interchangeable tense forms. علاقه داشتم is a past state, while علاقهمند شدم is an event of entering that state. English I became interested also marks the boundary, but English I was interested may correspond to either علاقه داشتم or علاقهمند بودم.
داشتن and کردن with related nouns
Some lexical fields offer a useful state/activity contrast without using exactly the same noun. نیاز داشتن به describes a requirement; استفاده کردن از describes the action of using what meets it. اعتماد داشتن به presents trust as an attitude; اعتماد کردن به can present the act or decision of relying on someone in a particular situation.
این گیاه در زمستان به نور مستقیم نیاز ندارد.
in giyâh dar zemestân be nur-e mostaqim niyâz nadârad.
This plant does not need direct light in winter. (neutral standard; state/requirement)
برای این آزمایش از آب تصفیهشده استفاده کردیم.
barâ-ye in âzmâyesh az âb-e tasfiye-shode estefâde kardim.
We used purified water for this experiment. (neutral formal; activity)
به تجربهی ناهید اعتماد دارم، ولی این بار به قضاوت خودم اعتماد کردم.
be tajrobe-ye Nâhid e'temâd dâram, vali in bâr be qazâvat-e khod-am e'temâd kardam.
I trust Nahid's experience, but this time I relied on my own judgment. (neutral; disposition versus situated act)
The difference between اعتماد داشتن and اعتماد کردن is not absolute. Both can translate “trust,” and real usage overlaps. داشتن is particularly natural for a standing attitude; کردن makes an act of reliance more salient. This is an honest lexical gray area, not a clean aspect rule.
دوست داشتن is a lexical unit
دوست داشتن means “like/love.” Although it contains داشتن, it does not behave like literal possession, and its object can take را: این فیلم را دوست دارم. There is no ordinary active counterpart دوست کردن meaning “perform liking.” English love is a simple verb, but Persian learners must retrieve the two-part lexical predicate. Its object patterns are developed in the دوست داشتن reference.
این محله را دوست داریم چون همهچیز نزدیک است.
in mahalle râ dust dârim chun hame-chiz nazdik ast.
We like this neighborhood because everything is nearby. (neutral standard)
Progressives, commands, and register
Activity compounds readily answer “what are you doing?” and can occur under progressive داشتن: دارم تمرین میکنم “I am practicing.” A stative داشتن compound ordinarily does not repeat progressive داشتن: not دارم علاقه دارم. To describe a developing attitude, choose دارم علاقهمند میشوم only in a context where the change truly unfolds, or more naturally کمکم علاقهمند میشوم.
— چرا هنوز بیداری؟ — دارم برای مصاحبهی فردا تمرین میکنم.
— cherâ hanuz bidâri? — dâram barâ-ye mosâhebe-ye fardâ tamrin mi-konam.
— Why are you still awake? — I'm practicing for tomorrow's interview. (neutral conversation)
In Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), third-person دارد / میکند normally reduce to داره / میکنه; first- and second-person دارم / داری retain their familiar shapes. State/activity structure stays intact. A colloquial form is not less grammatical; it is simply unsuitable in formal writing.
Common Mistakes
1. Using a progressive with a simple stative reading
❌ من دارم به موسیقی کلاسیک علاقه دارم.
Incorrect for a simple present state — the progressive auxiliary cannot duplicate stative داشتن this way.
✅ من به موسیقی معاصر ایران علاقه دارم.
man be musiqi-ye mo'âser-e Irân alâqe dâram.
I am interested in contemporary Iranian music.
2. Replacing a stored داشتن compound with کردن
❌ این پروژه به بودجهی بیشتری نیاز میکند.
Incorrect for ‘needs’ in neutral Iranian Persian — the stored predicate is نیاز داشتن.
✅ این پروژه به زمان و بودجهی بیشتری نیاز دارد.
in porozhe be zamân va budje-ye bishtari niyâz dârad.
This project needs more time and funding.
3. Confusing a state with entry into it
❌ بعد از دیدن فیلم، ناگهان به موضوع علاقه داشتم شدم.
Incorrect — use علاقهمند شدن for becoming interested.
✅ بعد از دیدن فیلم، ناگهان به موضوع علاقهمند شدم.
ba'd az didan-e film, nâgahân be mowzu' alâqe-mand shodam.
After seeing the film, I suddenly became interested in the subject.
4. Treating دوست as a copular adjective
❌ بچهها این بازی را دوست هستند.
Incorrect for ‘like’ — the lexical predicate is دوست داشتن, not a copular adjective.
✅ بچهها این بازی گروهی را خیلی دوست دارند.
bachche-hâ in bâzi-ye goruhi râ kheyli dust dârand.
The children really like this team game.
Key Takeaways
- Light داشتن favors continuing attitudes, relations, and requirements; کردن favors activities and interventions.
- Duration does not determine the choice, and lexical collocation outranks a broad semantic tendency.
- علاقه داشتن is a state; علاقهمند شدن enters that state; علاقهمند کردن causes it.
- Some near-pairs overlap, as with اعتماد داشتن / اعتماد کردن; learn their discourse tendencies rather than inventing a rigid rule.
