گرفتن gereftan: to Take

گرفتن gereftan begins with the concrete idea “take, get, receive, catch,” but it is also one of Persian’s most productive light verbs. Its past stem is گرفتـ gereft- and its unrelated-looking present stem is گیرـ gir-. That contrast must be memorized: the present is می‌گیرم, not a form built from گرفت.

English take is only a rough guide. Persian uses گرفتن in عکس گرفتن “take a photo” and دوش گرفتن “take a shower,” but not in every English take expression. More importantly, combinations such as تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” یاد گرفتن “learn,” and خوابم گرفت “I got sleepy” each have their own argument structure.

Negation is regular but selects the correct stem for the tense: نمی‌گیرم، نگرفتم، نگرفته‌ام، نگیرم. The singular command is بگیر; its negative is نگیر, without affirmative بـ. The general morphology is reviewed on High-Frequency Irregular Present Stems.

هر روز صبح از همین نانوایی نان تازه می‌گیرم.

har ruz-e sobh az hamin nânvâyi nân-e tâze mi-giram.

Every morning I get fresh bread from this same bakery. (neutral standard; present stem گیر)

دیروز نسخه‌ی چاپی گزارش را از دفتر گرفتم.

diruz noskhe-ye châpi-ye gozâresh râ az daftar gereftam.

Yesterday I collected the printed copy of the report from the office. (neutral standard; simple past)

امیدوارم پیش از سفر جواب آزمایش را بگیری.

omidvâram pish az safar javâb-e âzmâyesh râ be-giri.

I hope you get the test result before the trip. (neutral; present subjunctive)

Concrete taking, receiving, and catching

In its central transitive use, گرفتن has an agent or recipient as subject and the thing taken, received, or caught as object. A specific object normally takes را; a source can take از. Context supplies the narrower English verb: بلیت گرفتن may mean “get/buy a ticket,” بسته را گرفتن “receive/take the parcel,” and توپ را گرفتن “catch the ball.”

خواهش می‌کنم این پوشه را بگیر و روی میز مدیر بگذار.

khâhesh mi-konam in pushe râ be-gir-o ru-ye miz-e modir be-gozâr.

Please take this folder and put it on the manager’s desk. (neutral singular command)

دروازه‌بان توپ را با یک دست گرفت.

darvâze-bân tup râ bâ yek dast gereft.

The goalkeeper caught the ball with one hand. (neutral standard)

💡
Do not memorize one English gloss for گرفتن. First identify the Persian frame—object, source, and any nonverbal element—then choose “take,” “get,” “receive,” “catch,” or another natural English translation.

Compounds: the nonverbal element carries the event

In many compounds, گرفتن contributes acquisition, initiation, or control while the preceding noun supplies the lexical meaning. Common current combinations include تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” یاد گرفتن “learn,” تماس گرفتن “make contact/call,” عکس گرفتن “take a photo,” دوش گرفتن “take a shower,” and در نظر گرفتن “take into account.” Treat each as a lexical unit; replacing گرفتن with another light verb may be unidiomatic or may change the meaning.

بعد از مقایسه‌ی قیمت‌ها تصمیم گرفتیم یک هفته صبر کنیم.

ba'd az moqâyese-ye qeymat-hâ tasmim gereftim yek hafte sabr konim.

After comparing the prices, we decided to wait a week. (neutral standard; تصمیم گرفتن plus subjunctive complement)

شماره‌اش را یادداشت کردم تا فردا با او تماس بگیرم.

shomâre-ash râ yâddâsht kardam tâ fardâ bâ u tamâs be-giram.

I wrote down her number so that I can call her tomorrow. (neutral; تماس گرفتن)

The position of the object follows the compound as a whole: از منظره عکس گرفتیم, not an English word-for-word order. In careful writing, productive می‌ remains attached with a ZWNJ: عکس می‌گیریم.

Inceptive and experiencer constructions

Some highly frequent predicates present an event or sensation as taking hold. آتش گرفتن means “catch fire”; گریه‌اش گرفت means “he/she began to cry.” With bodily states, an enclitic pronoun often marks the experiencer: خوابم گرفت literally patterns like “sleep took me,” but idiomatically means “I got sleepy.” دردش گرفت can mean “it started hurting” or “he/she had a sudden pain,” depending on context.

وسط فیلم خوابم گرفت و ده دقیقه‌ی آخر را ندیدم.

vasat-e film khâb-am gereft-o dah daqiqe-ye âkhar râ na-didam.

I got sleepy during the film and missed the last ten minutes. (neutral spoken standard; experiencer clitic ـم)

سیم برق داغ شد، اما خوشبختانه آتش نگرفت.

sim-e barq dâgh shod, ammâ khosh-bakhtâne âtash na-gereft.

The electrical wire became hot, but fortunately it did not catch fire. (neutral standard; inceptive compound)

These patterns are productive only within established collocations. English “become + adjective” does not license a new گرفتن compound automatically; Persian often chooses شدن instead.

Tehran speech

Everyday Tehran reduces the standard endings in می‌گیره، می‌گیرین، می‌گیرن (informal, regional: Tehran). The stem vowel remains i. Past گرفتم is pronounced much like the careful form, while plural گرفتند becomes گرفتن. Colloquial writing may show these reductions, but formal prose keeps می‌گیرد، می‌گیرید، می‌گیرند.

اگه مسیر خلوت باشه، تاکسی می‌گیرم و زود می‌رسم.

age masir khalvat bâshe, tâksi mi-giram-o zud mi-resam.

If the roads are clear, I’ll take a taxi and arrive early. (informal, regional: Tehran)

💡
Experiencer ـم in خوابم گرفت is not the subject ending of گرفت. The verb stays third-person singular because خواب is the element construed as taking hold; the clitic identifies who experiences it.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the past stem in an ordinary present

❌ من هر روز از این فروشگاه قهوه می‌گرفتمم.

Incorrect — می‌گرفتم is past imperfective, and the extra ـم is impossible; present ‘I get’ uses گیر.

✅ من هر هفته از این فروشگاه قهوه‌ی تازه می‌گیرم.

man har hafte az in forushgâh qahve-ye tâze mi-giram.

Every week I get fresh coffee from this shop.

2. Omitting را from an already identified object

❌ همان بسته‌ای که صبح رسید گرفتم و همان‌جا بازش کردم.

Incorrect in careful written Persian — همان makes this direct object specific, so use را.

✅ همان بسته‌ای را که صبح رسید گرفتم و همان‌جا بازش کردم.

hamân baste-i râ ke sobh resid gereftam-o hamân-jâ bâz-ash kardam.

I took that very parcel that arrived this morning and opened it right there.

3. Translating English “take medicine” literally

❌ دکتر گفت این قرص را بعد از شام بگیرم.

Incorrect for ‘take this pill’ — Persian normally uses خوردن for taking medicine orally.

✅ دکتر گفت این قرص را هر شب بعد از شام بخورم.

doktor goft in qors râ har shab ba'd az shâm be-khoram.

The doctor told me to take this pill every night after dinner.

4. Separating the imperfective prefix

❌ برای سفر عکس زیاد می گیرم.

Incorrect standard orthography — productive می‌ attaches to the verb with a ZWNJ.

✅ در سفرهای خانوادگی همیشه عکس‌های زیادی می‌گیریم.

dar safar-hâ-ye khânevâdegi hamishe aks-hâ-ye ziyâdi mi-girim.

We always take lots of photos on family trips.

Key Takeaways

  • Memorize گرفتن — گرفت — گیر — گرفته, with بگیر and negative نگیر.
  • A specific thing taken or received normally takes را; a source can take از.
  • Learn compounds as lexical units: یاد گرفتن، تصمیم گرفتن، تماس گرفتن، عکس گرفتن.
  • In خوابم گرفت, the enclitic marks the experiencer; it is not a first-person verb ending.
  • Keep Tehran می‌گیره/می‌گیرن separate from standard می‌گیرد/می‌گیرند.
