کردن versus شدن Transitivity Pairs

Persian often pairs the same nonverbal element with کردن and شدن. The کردن member presents an external cause acting on an object; the شدن member presents the affected participant as the subject of a change: اتاق را گرم کردم “I warmed the room” versus اتاق گرم شد “the room became warm.”

This is more than replacing English “make” with one verb and “become” with another. The light verb reorganizes the argument structure of the whole lexical predicate. It decides whether the clause requires a causer, whether a specific affected object can take را, and whether the event is viewed from outside or from the changing participant.

The central alternation

Nonverbal elementCaused/transitiveChange/intransitiveCore contrast
گرمچیزی را گرم کردنچیزی گرم شدنwarm something / become warm
بازچیزی را باز کردنچیزی باز شدنopen something / open
آمادهچیزی را آماده کردنچیزی آماده شدنprepare something / get ready
شروعچیزی را شروع کردنچیزی شروع شدنstart something / begin
حلچیزی را حل کردنچیزی حل شدنsolve something / get solved

In the transitive member, the subject is the causer and the changed entity is the object. In the intransitive member, that entity becomes the grammatical subject. Persian does not need an explicit equivalent of English itself: یخ آب شد simply means “the ice melted.”

قبل از رسیدن مهمان‌ها اتاق را گرم کردیم.

qabl az residan-e mehmân-hâ otâq râ garm kardim.

We warmed the room before the guests arrived. (neutral standard; caused change)

با طلوع آفتاب، هوا خیلی زود گرم شد.

bâ tolu'-e âftâb, havâ kheyli zud garm shod.

At sunrise, the weather warmed up very quickly. (neutral standard; change of state)

پرونده‌ها را پیش از جلسه آماده کنید.

parvande-hâ râ pish az jalase âmâde konid.

Please prepare the files before the meeting. (neutral formal; transitive)

گزارش نهایی تا فردا آماده می‌شود.

gozâresh-e nahâyi tâ fardâ âmâde mi-shavad.

The final report will be ready by tomorrow. (neutral standard; resulting readiness)

💡
Follow the changed participant. If it is a را-marked object, choose the transitive predicate with کردن. If it is the subject undergoing the change, choose the intransitive predicate with شدن.

Adjectives and nouns behave alike—but not mechanically

Adjectival elements make the result especially visible: تمیز کردن / تمیز شدن, خاموش کردن / خاموش شدن, بیدار کردن / بیدار شدن. Nominal elements can create the same valency contrast: شروع کردن / شروع شدن, تمام کردن / تمام شدن, لغو کردن / لغو شدن.

نوسان برق دستگاه را خاموش کرد و ضبط صدا ناگهان متوقف شد.

navasân-e barq dastgâh râ khâmush kard va zabt-e sedâ nâgahân motavaqqef shod.

A power fluctuation turned off the device, and the audio recording suddenly stopped. (neutral standard)

مسئول سالن برنامه را ده دقیقه دیرتر شروع کرد.

mas'ul-e sâlon barnâme râ dah daqiqe dir-tar shoru' kard.

The hall manager started the program ten minutes late. (neutral standard)

برنامه به‌دلیل مشکل فنی ده دقیقه دیرتر شروع شد.

barnâme be-dalil-e moshkel-e fanni dah daqiqe dir-tar shoru' shod.

The program began ten minutes late because of a technical problem. (neutral standard)

The pattern is productive, but vocabulary still constrains it. کار کردن means “work”; کار شدن is not its general passive or intransitive partner. فکر کردن “think” does not pair with فکر شدن. Learn the whole predicate first, then recognize an alternation only when speakers actually use both members.

Change of state or passive?

A شدن predicate can leave the causer unexpressed. With a state adjective, this often yields a genuine anticausative reading: در باز شد “the door opened,” with no commitment about who opened it. With an event noun such as لغو, the same morphology readily receives a passive-like reading: جلسه لغو شد “the meeting was canceled.”

پنجره با وزش باد باز شد.

panjare bâ vazesh-e bâd bâz shod.

The window opened in the wind. (neutral; spontaneous/externally triggered change without an agent)

پرواز عصر به‌علت مه شدید لغو شد.

parvâz-e asr be-ellat-e meh-e shadid laghv shod.

The evening flight was canceled because of heavy fog. (neutral; passive-like event)

An explicit agent with توسط strongly favors a syntactic passive interpretation and a (formal) register: پرواز توسط شرکت لغو شد. In ordinary conversation Persian often avoids naming a passive agent and instead uses an active clause: شرکت پرواز را لغو کرد. The full tense system belongs on the first passive page.

شرکت هواپیمایی پرواز صبح را لغو کرد، اما پرواز عصر انجام شد.

sherkat-e havâpeymâyi parvâz-e sobh râ laghv kard, ammâ parvâz-e asr anjâm shod.

The airline canceled the morning flight, but the evening flight operated. (neutral active alternative)

💡
Do not force every شدن compound into one label. Some clearly describe spontaneous change, some are conventional passives, and some are ambiguous. The presence of an agent phrase, the nonverbal element, and context decide the reading.

A connected contrast in conversation

— در را باز کردی؟ — نه، خودش باز شد؛ قفلش خراب است.

— dar râ bâz kardi? — na, khod-ash bâz shod; qofl-ash kharâb ast.

— Did you open the door? — No, it opened by itself; its lock is broken. (neutral conversation; explicit causation versus spontaneous change)

In Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran), the same contrast appears with کرد / شد and reduced present forms می‌کنه / می‌شه. The valency does not change with register: colloquial pronunciation never licenses را with the intransitive member.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping را with the intransitive member

❌ هوا اتاق را گرم شد.

Incorrect — with گرم شدن, the changed entity is the subject, not a را-marked object.

✅ اتاق بعد از چند دقیقه گرم شد.

otâq ba'd az chand daqiqe garm shod.

The room became warm after a few minutes.

2. Using شدن with a causer and direct object

❌ تعمیرکار دستگاه خراب را روشن شد.

Incorrect — a repairer causing a specific device to turn on requires روشن کردن.

✅ تعمیرکار دستگاه خراب را دوباره روشن کرد.

ta'mirkâr dastgâh-e kharâb râ do-bâre rowshan kard.

The repairer switched the broken device on again.

3. Treating every کردن compound as a pair

❌ بعد از تعطیلی اداره، دو ساعت کار شدم.

Incorrect for ‘I worked’ — کار کردن has no general intransitive partner کار شدن.

✅ بعد از تعطیلی اداره، دو ساعت دیگر کار کردم.

ba'd az ta'tili-ye edâre, do sâ'at-e digar kâr kardam.

After the office closed, I worked for another two hours.

4. Conjugating the nonverbal element

❌ بچه‌ها آماده‌اند شدند.

Incorrect — آماده remains unchanged; only شدن carries tense and agreement.

✅ همه‌ی دانشجوها پیش از جلسه آماده شدند.

hame-ye dâneshju-hâ pish az jalase âmâde shodand.

All the students got ready before the session.

Key Takeaways

  • X را Y کردن adds a causer; X Y شدن presents X as undergoing a change.
  • Both adjectives and nouns participate, but lexical gaps prevent automatic pairing.
  • A شدن member may be anticausative, passive-like, or contextually ambiguous.
  • The whole combination is the lemma: record گرم کردن and گرم شدن, not merely کردن / شدن.
