A Persian lexical predicate can be structurally unified without being typographically or syntactically adjacent. Modern دعوتش کردم places an object clitic between the lexical nonverbal base and the inflected light verb. Classical prose and verse allow heavier intervening material, while manuscripts may supply spacing that reflects scribal habit rather than modern word boundaries.
Philological analysis therefore cannot equate “written together,” “standing next to each other,” and “forming one predicate.” It must combine syntax, argument structure, semantic unity, prosody where recoverable, parallel passages, dictionary evidence, and the edition's own normalization policy.
Four different kinds of separation
| Surface pattern | What intervenes | Diagnostic question | Likely analysis |
|---|---|---|---|
| دعوتش کردم | object clitic on nonverbal host | Is ـش the object of the whole predicate? | one compound predicate |
| سخن کوتاه کرد | modifier of a noun-like element | Does کوتاه describe speech or the manner/result? | context-dependent |
| دست از این کار کشید | prepositional complement | Does the whole mean “cease” rather than pull a hand? | discontinuous idiomatic predicate |
| variable manuscript spacing | scribal joining or division | Does the spacing recur consistently in this witness? | orthographic evidence only |
The same surface distance can arise from different structures. A clitic is phonologically dependent; a prepositional phrase is a syntactic complement; a modifier may make a nominal element more referential; poetic hyperbaton may displace a constituent for meter or focus. “Discontinuous compound” is thus a conclusion to justify, not a label triggered by any intervening word.
فرستاده سخن در ستایش خرد بسیار کرد.
ferestâde sokhan dar setâyesh-e kherad besyâr kard.
The envoy spoke at length in praise of wisdom. (constructed historical-style example; not a quotation)
دبیر نامه را پیش روی امیر باز کرد.
dabir nâme râ pish-e ru-ye amir bâz kard.
The secretary opened the letter before the emir. (constructed historical-style example; not a quotation; ordinary caused-change compound)
The first sentence invites analysis of سخن کردن “speak” with an expanded nominal domain; the second has the transparent predicate باز کردن. Both end in کرد, but the lexical organization differs.
Start from semantic and argument-structure unity
A useful first diagnostic is whether the pieces describe one event and jointly determine its participants. In دست از کار کشیدن “stop working/give up the task,” literal “hand” is not an independently manipulated object, and از کار is licensed by the idiom as a whole. Contrast literal پرده را کنار کشیدن, where an agent physically pulls a curtain.
پس از آن هشدار، بازرگان دست از معامله کشید.
pas az ân hoshdâr, bâzargân dast az mo'âmele keshid.
After that warning, the merchant abandoned the transaction. (constructed literary-style example; not a quotation; discontinuous idiom)
خدمتکار پردهی سنگین را آهسته کنار کشید.
khedmatkâr parde-ye sangin râ âheste kenâr keshid.
The attendant slowly pulled the heavy curtain aside. (constructed literary-style example; not a quotation; literal motion)
Inflection offers another clue. Tense, negation, and agreement occur on the verbal component, but their semantic scope covers the whole predicate: دست نکشید means “did not give up,” not simply “did not pull.” Still, final inflection alone is not sufficient, because ordinary object-plus-verb combinations inflect in the same place.
Classical word order and intervening dependents
Classical Persian was verb-final but permitted discourse-driven rearrangement, heavy constituents, and poetic displacement. A nonverbal predicate element could be expanded or separated from its light verb by complements and modifiers. An editor should ask whether the intervening phrase belongs inside the nonverbal constituent, functions as an argument of the whole predicate, or has been scrambled for focus.
شاه با فرستادگان آن دیار پیمانی استوار بست.
shâh bâ ferestâdegân-e ân diyâr peymân-i ostovâr bast.
The king made a firm covenant with the envoys of that land. (constructed historical-style example; not a quotation)
Here پیمانی استوار is internally modified and more noun-like than bare پیمان بستن. That does not force an all-or-nothing decision between “noun plus heavy verb” and “compound verb.” Persian complex predicates differ in lexicalization, and historical contexts may document a stage at which a construction remains analyzable in both ways.
وزیر در آن کار تأمل بسیار کرد و پاسخ نداد.
vazir dar ân kâr ta'ammol besyâr kard va pâsokh nadâd.
The vizier reflected at length on that matter and gave no answer. (constructed historical-style example; not a quotation; بسیار intervenes adverbially)
A philologist should resist silently modernizing such a line to the first modern synonym that comes to mind. The historically available collocation, meter or cadence, and the manuscript's lexical choices are part of the evidence.
Manuscript spacing is evidence, not a parse
Premodern Persian manuscripts do not follow today's standardized conventions for word spacing, ZWNJ, می, plural suffixes, or compounds. A scribe may join material that a modern editor separates or separate material that modern orthography joins. Different witnesses can divide the same phrase differently.
Consequently, a diplomatic transcription should preserve what the witness shows, while a normalized edition should state its policy. Modern میکرد and خانهها may be editorial normalizations even when the underlying morphology is secure. The same caution applies to the boundaries inside a complex predicate. The historical orthography page gives parallel principles for ezafe.
در نسخهی دوم، کاتب همان عبارت را با فاصلهای دیگر نوشته است.
dar noskhe-ye dovvom, kâteb hamân ebârat râ bâ fâsele-i digar neveshte ast.
In the second manuscript, the scribe wrote the same expression with different spacing. (academic/philological)
Avoiding false segmentation
Begin with the longest plausible lexical unit, then test it. روی آوردن به means “turn to/adopt”; parsing روی as an ordinary possessed “face” loses the construction. Conversely, not every noun before a frequent verb is a light-verb element: نامه را گرفت ordinarily means “received/took the letter,” with نامه as a referential object of heavy گرفتن.
پس از شکست، گروه به روشی تازه روی آورد.
pas az shekast, goruh be ravesh-i tâze ruy âvard.
After the failure, the group turned to a new method. (formal/literary; lexical predicate روی آوردن به)
پیک نامه را از نگهبان گرفت و بیدرنگ رفت.
peyk nâme râ az negahbân gereft va bi-darang raft.
The courier took the letter from the guard and left immediately. (constructed narrative; heavy گرفتن with a direct object)
Parallel contexts are crucial. If روی آوردن به repeatedly selects a goal with به and means adopting a practice, that distribution supports one lexical entry. If نامه varies freely with other concrete objects and accepts ordinary modifiers, heavy گرفتن is the better analysis.
Modern clitics preserve the old analytical problem
Discontinuity is not merely historical. In معرفیاش کردم, ـش is hosted by معرفی but is the object of معرفی کردن. In معرفیاش را خواندم, the same suffix is possessive inside the object noun phrase “his/her introduction.” The next verb and را distinguish the parses.
در مجلس معرفیاش کردند، ولی نامش را درست نشنیدم.
dar majles mo'arrefi-ash kardand, vali nâm-ash râ dorost nashenidam.
They introduced him or her at the gathering, but I did not hear the name correctly. (neutral standard; object clitic inside a compound)
The dedicated clitic analysis supplies the full modern comparison. It also demonstrates why a word-by-word gloss can produce a false possessive reading.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating manuscript spacing as syntactic proof
❌ چون کاتب دو واژه را جدا نوشته، آنها یک فعل را نمیسازند است.
Incorrect — the copula is malformed, and scribal spacing alone cannot decide predicate structure.
✅ فاصلهگذاری نسخه فقط یکی از قرینههای تحلیل است، نه داور نهایی آن.
fâsele-gozâri-ye noskhe faqat yeki az qarine-hâ-ye tahlil ast, na dâvar-e nahâyi-ye ân.
A manuscript's spacing is only one of several clues for analysis, not its final judge.
2. Translating only the noun
❌ بازرگان دست از معامله کشید را با دستش کشیدن ترجمه کرد.
Incorrect structure and analysis — دست از ... کشیدن means ‘give up/cease,’ not literally pull a hand.
✅ مترجم عبارت «دست از معامله کشید» را بهعنوان گزارهای کامل به معنی «منصرف شد» تحلیل کرد.
motarjem ebârat-e «dast az mo'âmele keshid» râ be-onvân-e gozâre-i kâmel be ma'ni-ye «monsaref shod» tahlil kard.
The translator analyzed دست از معامله کشید as a complete predicate meaning ‘withdrew.’
3. Calling every noun plus frequent verb a compound
❌ در نامه را گرفت، نامه جزئی از فعل گرفتن گرفت.
Incorrect — the repeated malformed predicate also misses that نامه is an ordinary direct object here.
✅ در جملهی «نامه را گرفت»، گرفتن معنای عادی «دریافت کردن» دارد.
dar jomle-ye «nâme râ gereft», gereftan ma'nâ-ye âdi-ye «daryâft kardan» dârad.
In نامه را گرفت, گرفتن has its ordinary meaning ‘receive/take.’
4. Modernizing without declaring it
❌ ویراستار املای نسخه را عوض کرد و گفت چیزی تغییر نکردهاند.
Incorrect — the agreement is malformed, and silent normalization is not textually neutral.
✅ ویراستار شکل اصلی را در حاشیه ثبت کرد و املای متن را با توضیح نوسازی کرد.
virâstâr shekl-e asli râ dar hâshiye sabt kard va emlâ-ye matn râ bâ towzih now-sâzi kard.
The editor recorded the original form in a note and modernized the text's spelling with an explanation.
Key Takeaways
- Syntactic or typographic separation does not prevent two elements from forming one lexical predicate.
- Diagnose unity through meaning, argument structure, lexical selection, inflectional scope, and parallel contexts.
- Classical order and manuscript spacing require witness-specific analysis; modern boundaries may be editorial.
- Test both errors: falsely splitting an idiom and falsely merging a referential object with a heavy verb.
