Modern Persian builds an enormous share of its verbal lexicon from a noun, adjective, adverbial, or borrowed item plus a small set of light verbs: پذیرش کردن، روشن شدن، پاسخ دادن، تصمیم گرفتن، آسیب دیدن. This system did not arise in one moment or from one source. It reflects a long internal movement toward analytic predicates, intensified by contact vocabulary and renewed by every generation's need to name new activities.
The historical lesson is not that “old Persian had simple verbs and modern Persian has compounds.” Early and Classical New Persian already contained complex predicates, and simple verbs remain current today. What changed is their relative density, productivity, and stylistic distribution. Many lexical fields now offer both an inherited simple verb and a compound competitor.
Four forces behind the expansion
| Historical force | What it contributed | Illustrative result | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| internal analytic development | full-verb lexemes were recruited into lighter event-structural uses | کردن، شدن، دادن، گرفتن | not every use of these verbs is “light” |
| contact vocabulary | borrowed nouns entered Persian predicates | تحقیق کردن، تلفن کردن | the Persian construction was not simply borrowed wholesale |
| competition with simple verbs | new compounds overlapped with inherited lexemes | پذیرفتن / قبول کردن | replacement is rarely total |
| modern lexical productivity | technical and social innovations received finite verbal grammar | اسکن کردن، بهروزرسانی کردن | productive does not mean stylistically uniform |
The contrast between heavy and light uses is semantic, not merely phonetic. In literal نامه را گرفت “took the letter,” گرفتن denotes possession-changing acquisition. In تصمیم گرفت “decided,” it helps package inception or commitment but does not describe physically taking a decision. The noun and light verb form one event. The system's basic lexical architecture remains visible throughout its history.
پس از چند روز گفتوگو، هر دو طرف پیشنهاد تازه را پذیرفتند.
pas az chand ruz goft-o-gu, har do taraf pishnehâd-e tâze râ paziroftand.
After several days of discussion, both sides accepted the new proposal. (neutral formal; current simple verb)
پس از چند روز گفتوگو، هر دو طرف با پیشنهاد تازه موافقت کردند.
pas az chand ruz goft-o-gu, har do taraf bâ pishnehâd-e tâze movâfeqat kardand.
After several days of discussion, both sides agreed to the new proposal. (formal; related compound predicate, not a word-for-word duplicate of پذیرفتن)
Contact supplied material, not the whole grammar
After Arabic became a major source of learned vocabulary, Persian could combine Arabic-origin nouns and verbal nouns with native light verbs: اعلام کردن، تحقیق کردن، تصمیم گرفتن، توضیح دادن. This made it possible to integrate new lexical material without creating a new simple conjugation. The finite morphology remained Persian and appeared on the light verb.
It is misleading to say Arabic “caused” the light-verb system. Iranian languages already had analytic resources, and many compounds use native material: یاد گرفتن، کار کردن، رنج بردن، زمین خوردن. Contact enlarged the stock of nonverbal elements; internal Persian grammar determined how they became predicates.
پژوهشگر دادههای تازه را بررسی کرد و نتیجه را توضیح داد.
pezhuheshgar dâde-hâ-ye tâze râ barrasi kard va natije râ towzih dâd.
The researcher examined the new data and explained the result. (academic/formal; Arabic-origin and native material in Persian compounds)
کودک راه رفتن را از خواهر بزرگترش یاد گرفت.
kudak râh raftan râ az khâhar-e bozorg-tar-ash yâd gereft.
The child learned to walk from his or her older sister. (neutral; native nonverbal element)
Replacement, coexistence, and specialization
Compound predicates have displaced some simple verbs in everyday usage, but “replacement” is often a shift in frequency or register rather than extinction. Compare نگریستن / نگاه کردن, آغازیدن / آغاز کردن, کوشیدن / تلاش کردن, افزودن / اضافه کردن, and پذیرفتن / قبول کردن. The first member of several pairs sounds more (literary) or (formal); others, especially پذیرفتن, remain ordinary in careful modern prose.
راوی لحظهای به پنجره نگریست و سپس سخن آغاز کرد.
râvi lahze-i be panjare negarist va sepas sokhan âghâz kard.
The narrator looked at the window for a moment and then began to speak. (constructed literary-style example; not a quotation)
یه لحظه به این عکس نگاه کن؛ چیزی عجیب نمیبینی؟
ye lahze be in aks negâh kon; chiz-i ajib nemi-bini?
Look at this photo for a moment; don't you see anything strange? (informal, regional: Tehran; current compound competitor)
ویراستار دو بند تازه به مقدمه افزود.
virâstâr do band-e tâze be moqaddame afzud.
The editor added two new paragraphs to the introduction. (formal; current simple verb)
لطفا نام همکار جدید را هم به فهرست اضافه کنید.
lotfan nâm-e hamkâr-e jadid râ ham be fehrest ezâfe konid.
Please add the new colleague's name to the list as well. (neutral formal; compound competitor)
These are not always exact semantic twins. قبول کردن has colloquial and institutional senses that do not perfectly match every use of پذیرفتن; آغاز کردن and شروع کردن differ in stylistic associations. Historical competition produces lexical differentiation as well as replacement.
Modern productivity
New loans and technical nouns enter compounds rapidly: اسکن کردن، دانلود کردن، بایگانی کردن، بهروزرسانی کردن. کردن is especially productive for deliberate activities, while alternative light verbs can encode affectedness or change. Speakers still reject arbitrary pairings when an established predicate exists.

form râ emzâ konid, eskan konid va dar sâmâne bârgozâri konid.
Sign the form, scan it, and upload it to the system. (neutral technical/formal)
گوشیام بهطور خودکار بهروزرسانی شد و همهی تنظیماتش عوض شد.
gushi-am be-towr-e khodkâr be-ruz-resâni shod va hame-ye tanzimât-ash avaz shod.
My phone updated automatically, and all its settings changed. (neutral standard; intransitive modern coinage)
Register stratification is not a timeline
Simple verbs are not automatically ancient, and compounds are not automatically casual. بررسی کردن is neutral-formal; مورد بررسی قرار دادن is bureaucratic; نگریستن is literary; پذیرفتن is current. Modern Persian can even prefer a long nominal predicate in official prose while conversation uses a shorter compound.
Historical reading therefore requires two separate questions: when is the form attested, and what register does it carry in the text being read? A form's modern stylistic value cannot be projected unchanged onto a tenth- or thirteenth-century context.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating all compounds as Arabic imports
❌ فارسی همهی فعلهای مرکبش را از عربی گرفته است.
Incorrect historical claim — contact supplied much vocabulary, while Persian internally developed and extended the construction.
✅ فارسی واژههای وامگرفته را با فعلهای سبک خود به کار میبرد.
fârsi vâzhe-hâ-ye vâm-gerefte râ bâ fe'l-hâ-ye sabok-e khod be kâr mi-barad.
Persian uses borrowed words with its own light verbs.
2. Assuming a compound exactly duplicates a simple verb
❌ هر جا پذیرفتن میآید، قبول کردن همان معنی و همان سبک را داردند.
Incorrect — the agreement is malformed, and historical competitors can differ in sense and register.
✅ پذیرفتن و قبول کردن در بسیاری از بافتها هممعنیاند، اما همیشه همسبک نیستند.
paziroftan va qabul kardan dar besyâri az bâft-hâ ham-ma'ni-and, ammâ hamishe ham-sabk nistand.
پذیرفتن and قبول کردن are synonymous in many contexts, but they do not always share the same register.
3. Conjugating the borrowed element
❌ دیروز فایل را اسکنیدم.
Incorrect — the loan اسکن remains fixed; کردن carries past tense and agreement.
✅ دیروز همهی صفحهها را اسکن کردم.
diruz hame-ye safhe-hâ râ eskan kardam.
Yesterday I scanned all the pages.
4. Treating کردن as a universal historical solution
❌ کودک راه رفتن را یاد کرد.
Incorrect for ‘learned’ — the established predicate is یاد گرفتن; یاد کردن has another meaning.
✅ کودک نام خیابان را خیلی زود یاد گرفت.
kudak nâm-e khiyâbân râ kheyli zud yâd gereft.
The child learned the street name very quickly.
Key Takeaways
- Persian light verbs expanded through internal grammatical development, contact vocabulary, lexical competition, and modern coinage.
- Compounds often competed with simple verbs without eliminating them completely.
- Etymological origin and grammatical structure are different questions.
- Modern productivity is real but lexically constrained; store every predicate with its light verb and register.
