Degrees of Lexicalization in Compound Verbs

Persian compound verbs range from combinations whose meaning is easy to calculate, such as تمیز کردن “clean,” to conventional expressions such as تصمیم گرفتن “decide,” and opaque idioms such as جا زدن “give up/chicken out.” These are degrees of lexicalization: the more lexicalized a predicate is, the less its meaning and behavior follow automatically from its visible parts.

There is no single test that divides “real compounds” from freely assembled phrases. Semantic predictability, stress, the mobility of the nonverbal element, possible modifiers, and dictionary treatment often point in the same direction, but they need not do so. The best analysis is a continuum. Even a transparent compound is learned as a predicate, and even an opaque compound may allow a clitic or adverb between its pieces.

A three-zone map, not three sealed boxes

ZoneMeaningTypical flexibilityExamples
transparentclosely follows the nonverbal element and light verboften accepts degree words, complements, or productive alternationتمیز کردن، گرم شدن، بررسی کردن
semi-idiomaticmotivated, but established by conventionsome internal expansion; partner choice is lexicalتصمیم گرفتن، قول دادن، تماس گرفتن
opaquecannot be reliably calculated word by wordoften resists literal modification or replacementجا زدن، از دست دادن، دست به سر کردن

These labels describe prototypes. قول دادن is semantically motivated—one “gives one's word”—but a learner still cannot predict it merely from English “promise.” از دست دادن transparently evokes loss in some contexts, yet its modern range, including losing a person or opportunity, belongs to a conventional predicate.

کارمند میز کار را پیش از رسیدن مهمان‌ها کاملا تمیز کرد.

kârmand miz-e kâr râ pish az residan-e mehmân-hâ kâmelan tamiz kard.

The employee thoroughly cleaned the desk before the guests arrived. (neutral; relatively transparent)

پس از یک ساعت بحث، تصمیم دشواری گرفتیم.

pas az yek sâ'at bahs, tasmim-e doshvâri gereftim.

After an hour of discussion, we made a difficult decision. (neutral; semi-idiomatic and internally expandable)

با اولین مخالفت جا زد و از ادامه‌ی کار منصرف شد.

bâ avvalin mokhâlefat jâ zad va az edâme-ye kâr monsaref shod.

At the first sign of opposition, he backed out and gave up continuing the work. (informal; opaque جا زدن)

💡
“Transparent” does not mean “invent freely.” It means that an established predicate's meaning is comparatively easy to motivate. Conventional light-verb choice still has to be learned.

Semantic predictability and false literal readings

The nonverbal element supplies much of a compound's lexical content, while the light verb contributes event structure and argument roles. At the transparent end, تمیز شدن is readily understood as entering a clean state. At the opaque end, translating each piece can be actively misleading: جا زدن in its informal idiomatic reading does not describe striking a place, and دست به سر کردن does not describe moving a hand toward a head.

با کمی شوینده، لکه از روی میز پاک شد.

bâ kami shuyande, lakke az ru-ye miz pâk shod.

With a little cleaner, the stain came off the table. (neutral; transparent change of state)

مسئول دفتر مراجعه‌کننده را با یک جواب مبهم دست به سر کرد.

mas'ul-e daftar morâje'e-konande râ bâ yek javâb-e mobham dast be sar kard.

The office manager fobbed the visitor off with a vague answer. (informal-neutral; idiomatic)

Context can also select a literal or idiomatic reading of the same written sequence. جا زدن can be used literally in contexts involving fitting or inserting something, while وسط کار جا زدن conventionally means “quit/back out.” The complements and situation disambiguate the readings.

واشر نو را درست جا زدم، اما شلنگ هنوز نشتی داشت.

vâsher-e now râ dorost jâ zadam, ammâ shelang hanuz nashti dâsht.

I fitted the new washer correctly, but the hose was still leaking. (neutral; literal placement reading)

This ambiguity is evidence for separate conventional readings, not for a single vague translation of جا and زدن.

Syntactic mobility is scalar

A compound predicate is one lexical unit, but its written pieces need not be adjacent. The nonverbal element may take an adjective, plural marking, or a complement; an object clitic may attach within the predicate; adverbs and arguments may intervene. Greater internal flexibility often accompanies semantic transparency, but no one placement test is decisive.

In تصمیم دشواری گرفتیم, the noun تصمیم receives an adjective and indefinite marker while retaining the conventional deciding event. In قول محکمی داد, the noun is similarly expanded. By contrast, literal expansion inside highly opaque جا زدن is likely to force the literal “place/fit” reading rather than preserve informal “give up.”

او قول روشنی به خریداران داد و بعد به آن عمل کرد.

u qowl-e rowshani be kharidârân dâd va ba'd be ân amal kard.

She gave the buyers a clear promise and then kept it. (neutral; expandable nonverbal noun)

بهترین فرصت شغلی‌اش را فقط به‌خاطر تردید از دست داد.

behtarin forsat-e shoghli-ash râ faqat be-khâter-e tardid az dast dâd.

He lost his best job opportunity merely because of hesitation. (neutral; lexicalized multiword predicate)

The pieces of از دست دادن remain separated from the object because the object precedes the predicate; the preposition از is itself part of the stored infinitive. Clitic placement can create closer internal contact, as explained on clitic placement inside compound verbs, but separability does not dissolve the lexical unit.

Stress and prosodic cohesion

In neutral pronunciation, the nonverbal element of many compound predicates carries strong lexical prominence and the light verb may be prosodically less independent than a full lexical verb. More lexicalized and frequent combinations are especially prone to tight prosodic packaging. This is a tendency, not an infallible diagnostic.

Persian verbal morphology can alter the pattern. Negative نـ, imperfective می‌ـ, subjunctive بـ, contrastive focus, and sentence-level information structure all compete for prominence. A speaker correcting “borrowed” to “lost,” for example, can stress از دست داد differently from a neutral narration. Stress must therefore be judged in an unmarked sentence and combined with semantic and syntactic evidence.

گزارش را گم نکردم؛ فرصت ارائه‌اش را از دست دادم.

gozâresh râ gom na-kardam; forsat-e erâ'e-ash râ az dast dâdam.

I didn't lose the report; I missed the opportunity to present it. (neutral; contrastive focus can override default prominence)

💡
Orthographic spacing is not a lexicality test. Persian normally writes the members of a compound verb as separate words whether the meaning is transparent or opaque.

Dictionary treatment and learner entries

A useful dictionary entry records the complete infinitive, not merely the light verb. For تماس گرفتن با کسی, record the required با complement; for از دست دادن, include از as part of the predicate; for informal جا زدن, record its register and idiomatic sense separately from literal placement.

Different dictionaries may organize the same predicate under the nonverbal element, the light verb, or both. That editorial choice does not settle its grammatical status. Corpus frequency and attested frames are more revealing than typography or headword location.

— چرا نیامد؟ — دقیقه‌ی آخر جا زد؛ گفت آمادگی ندارد.

— cherâ na-yâmad? — daqiqe-ye âkhar jâ zad; goft âmâdegi na-dârad.

— Why didn't he come? — He chickened out at the last minute; he said he wasn't ready. (informal dialogue)

For production, a learner's entry should include at least four facts: whole infinitive, meaning, participant frame, and register. Add a natural example whenever literal translation is unreliable.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating only the visible noun or prepositional phrase

❌ او فرصت را از دست به کسی داد.

Incorrect — this tries to build ‘lose’ by translating the pieces separately.

✅ او فرصت شرکت در مسابقه را از دست داد.

u forsat-e sherkat dar mosâbeqe râ az dast dâd.

She lost the opportunity to participate in the competition.

2. Freely replacing a conventional light verb

❌ بعد از بحث طولانی تصمیم زدیم که بمانیم.

Incorrect — the established contemporary predicate is تصمیم گرفتن, not تصمیم زدن.

✅ بعد از بحث طولانی تصمیم گرفتیم یک شب دیگر بمانیم.

ba'd az bahs-e tulâni tasmim gereftim yek shab-e digar be-mânim.

After a long discussion, we decided to stay one more night.

3. Inserting را inside a fixed prepositional predicate

❌ فرصت را از دست را دادیم.

Incorrect — از دست دادن remains a whole predicate; را marks its object once.

✅ فرصت گفت‌وگوی مستقیم را به‌سادگی از دست دادیم.

forsat-e goft-o-gu-ye mostaqim râ be-sâdegi az dast dâdim.

We easily lost the opportunity for direct discussion.

4. Conjugating both pieces

❌ من تصمیمیدم گرفتم زودتر برگردم.

Incorrect — only گرفتن bears tense and person in تصمیم گرفتن.

✅ من همان‌جا تصمیم گرفتم زودتر برگردم.

man hamân-jâ tasmim gereftam zud-tar bar-gardam.

I decided right there to return earlier.

Key Takeaways

  • Lexicalization is a continuum from semantically transparent to opaque, not a binary division.
  • Meaning, syntactic mobility, prosody, and dictionary treatment are converging clues; none is decisive alone.
  • Internal separation is compatible with one lexical predicate, while internal modification can sometimes change an idiomatic reading into a literal one.
  • Store the whole infinitive with its complement frame and register, especially for opaque expressions.
