Objects and را with Compound Verbs

A Persian compound predicate can place two noun-like expressions before its light verb, but they do different jobs. In مریم نامه را امضا کرد “Maryam signed the letter,” امضا belongs to the predicate امضا کردن “sign,” while نامه را is its specific direct object. Only the true object receives را.

English learners often see “noun + noun + do” and cannot tell which noun is the object. The solution is not a rule that the noun nearest the verb is always fixed. Instead, identify the stored compound predicate first, retrieve its participant frame, and then decide whether an additional noun phrase is a specific direct object.

Find the predicate before finding the object

Sentence coreDirect objectNonverbal predicate elementWhole predicate
نامه را امضا کردمنامه راامضاامضا کردن — sign
مسئله را توضیح دادممسئله راتوضیحتوضیح دادن — explain
در را باز کرددر رابازباز کردن — open
نکته را یاد گرفتنکته رایادیاد گرفتن — learn
با شرکت تماس گرفتnoneتماستماس گرفتن با — contact
به موسیقی گوش دادnoneگوشگوش دادن به — listen

The stored expression tells you which item belongs to the predicate. If the dictionary entry is توضیح دادن, then توضیح is not the thing being explained; it helps form “explain.” The variable thing can be مسئله، قانون، دلیل، برنامه, and that is the direct object.

وکیل بند آخر قرارداد را با حوصله توضیح داد.

vakil band-e âkhar-e qarârdâd râ bâ howsele towzih dâd.

The lawyer patiently explained the final clause of the contract. (formal-neutral; object plus توضیح دادن)

قبل از خروج همه‌ی چراغ‌ها را خاموش کردیم.

qabl az khoruj hame-ye cherâgh-hâ râ khâmush kardim.

We turned off all the lights before leaving. (neutral standard; object plus خاموش کردن)

Here چراغ‌ها را is the affected object, while adjective خاموش combines with کردن to express causing a change of state. The same division holds whether one light is affected or an entire identified set.

صبح با شرکت بیمه تماس گرفتم و شماره‌ی پرونده را گفتم.

sobh bâ sherkat-e bime tamâs gereftam va shomâre-ye parvande râ goftam.

This morning I contacted the insurance company and gave the case number. (neutral standard; تماس is not an object)

💡
Start with the citation form: توضیح دادنِ چیزی، تماس گرفتن با کسی، گوش دادن به چیزی. Once that frame is known, را placement is no longer a guess based on word order.

Specificity controls را on the true object

A direct object already identifiable or singled out in discourse normally takes را. A bare nonspecific object can remain unmarked. This is the same specificity system used with simple verbs; compound predicates merely make the object harder to spot.

پزشک صبح چند بیمار معاینه کرد.

pezeshk sobh chand bimâr mo'âyene kard.

The doctor examined several patients this morning. (neutral; nonspecific plural object without را)

پزشک همان بیمار را دوباره معاینه کرد.

pezeshk hamân bimâr râ dubâre mo'âyene kard.

The doctor examined that same patient again. (neutral; identified object with را)

استاد یک مثال تازه مطرح کرد و بعد همان مثال را توضیح داد.

ostâd yek mesâl-e tâze matrah kard va ba'd hamân mesâl râ towzih dâd.

The professor introduced a new example and then explained that same example. (academic; new versus discourse-specific object)

English articles provide an imperfect clue, because را is not “the.” A specific indefinite object can take it, and a discourse-definite subject never takes it merely for being definite. See Specificity across یک، ی، and را.

💡
Ask two separate questions: “Is this phrase the direct object?” and “Is it specific or discourse-prominent?” Only if the answers support both roles should را appear.

The nonverbal element usually has no را—but the system is flexible

Bare تماس in تماس گرفتن and گوش in گوش دادن identify predicates rather than discourse objects. Adding را to them destroys the intended ordinary compound reading: با شرکت تماس را گرفتم does not mean “I contacted the company.”

در راه برگشت به پادکست تازه‌ای گوش دادیم.

dar râh-e bargasht be pâdkast-e tâze-i gush dâdim.

On the way back, we listened to a new podcast. (neutral; به complement plus fixed گوش)

This is a strong foundation rule, not an absolute claim that a nonverbal member can never expand. Persian compound predicates vary in syntactic tightness. فریب خوردن permits expanded فریبش را خوردن “fall for his/her trick,” and تصمیم گرفتن permits آن تصمیم را گرفتن “make/adopt that decision.” When a determiner or possessor makes the noun referential, its structure approaches an ordinary object phrase while the conventional verb partnership remains recognizable.

به دوستم هشدار داده بودم، اما او باز هم فریب همان فروشنده را خورد.

be dust-am hoshdâr dâde budam, ammâ u bâz ham farib-e hamân forushande râ khord.

I had warned my friend, but they fell for that same seller’s trick again. (neutral; expanded nominal inside a lexical predicate)

There is no perfectly mechanical boundary here. For production, memorize the high-frequency frame first; learn expanded variants as constructions in their own right rather than adding را freely.

A revealing minimal contrast: کار کردن versus کار را کردن

کار کردم ordinarily means “I worked”: کار is part of compound کار کردن. آن کار را کردم means “I did that task/deed”: demonstrative آن makes کار a referential object, را marks it, and کردن has its fuller “do” sense.

دیروز تا ساعت هفت کار کردم.

diruz tâ sâ'at-e haft kâr kardam.

Yesterday I worked until seven. (neutral; compound کار کردن)

آن کار را کردم چون هیچ راه دیگری نداشتیم.

ân kâr râ kardam chun hich râh-e digari na-dâshtim.

I did that because we had no other option. (neutral; referential object of کردن)

The surface sequence differs by only آن... را, but its lexical organization changes. This is why translations alone cannot locate the boundary.

Word order with objects and recipients

The neutral order places a direct object before the complete predicate. With a recipient or goal, a useful default is object + به phrase + nonverbal element + light verb: فایل را به مدیر نشان دادم. Persian permits discourse-motivated scrambling, so this is a production template rather than an iron law.

نسخه‌ی نهایی را به مدیر نشان دادیم و نظرش را پرسیدیم.

noskhe-ye nehâyi râ be modir neshân dâdim va nazar-ash râ porsidim.

We showed the final version to the manager and asked for her opinion. (neutral standard)

این حرکت را مربی مرحله‌به‌مرحله به ما یاد داد.

in harekat râ morabbi marhale-be-marhale be mâ yâd dâd.

The coach taught us this move step by step. (neutral; focused object before the subject)

The second sentence moves the specific object to the left as a discourse topic. را keeps its role clear. Non-SOV order is not automatically wrong; Persian uses position and marking together to organize information.

Object and recipient clitics

An object clitic may attach to the nonverbal element: دعوتش کردم “I invited him/her,” پیدایش کردم “I found it.” A recipient clitic often attaches to به: بهش توضیح دادم “I explained [it] to him/her.” The light verb still carries tense and agreement.

نشانی را برایش فرستادم و دوباره دعوتش کردم.

neshâni râ barâ-yash ferestâdam va dubâre da'vat-ash kardam.

I sent them the address and invited them again. (neutral spoken Persian; object clitic on دعوت)

فایل رو بهش نشون دادم، ولی توضیحش ندادم.

fâyl ro be-hash neshun dâdam, vali towzih-ash na-dâdam.

I showed them the file, but I did not explain it. (informal, regional: Tehran; recipient and object clitics)

If ـش could be a possessor, object, or recipient, expand the phrase. Compact speech depends heavily on context; careful writing prioritizes recoverable participant roles.

Three practical diagnostics

No single diagnostic is infallible, but these questions work together:

  1. What is the dictionary predicate? In امضا کردن, امضا belongs to the predicate.
  2. What can vary while the event stays the same? A person can sign a letter, form, or contract; those variable items are objects.
  3. Can the proposed object be omitted while the predicate survives? امضا کردم still means “I signed [it],” but نامه را کردم does not mean “I signed the letter.”

These tests are better than “the nearest noun is the verb part,” especially when adverbs, recipients, and topic movement intervene.

A short exchange

— قرارداد را امضا کردی؟ — نه، اول باید بند آخر را بررسی کنم.

— qarârdâd râ emzâ kardi? — na, avval bâyad band-e âkhar râ barrasi konam.

— Did you sign the contract? — No, I first need to examine the final clause. (careful spoken standard)

Common Mistakes

1. Marking تماس as the direct object

❌ دیروز با فروشگاه تماس را گرفتم.

Incorrect — تماس is the fixed nonverbal element; the contacted party takes با.

✅ دیروز با مسئول فروشگاه تماس گرفتم.

diruz bâ mas'ul-e forushgâh tamâs gereftam.

Yesterday I contacted the store manager.

2. Omitting را from an identified true object

❌ همان قرارداد قدیمی امضا کردیم.

Incorrect — همان makes قرارداد an identified direct object.

✅ همان قرارداد قدیمی را دوباره امضا کردیم.

hamân qarârdâd-e qadimi râ dubâre emzâ kardim.

We signed that same old contract again.

3. Adding را to the adjectival member of باز کردن

❌ نگهبان در را باز را کرد.

Incorrect — در is the direct object; باز belongs to the predicate باز کردن.

✅ نگهبان در اصلی را برای ما باز کرد.

negahbân dar-e asli râ barâ-ye mâ bâz kard.

The guard opened the main door for us.

4. Combining prepositional and object marking

❌ به مدیر را گزارش دادم.

Incorrect — a noun phrase introduced by به cannot also take object marker را.

✅ مشکل را به مدیر گزارش دادم.

moshkel râ be modir gozâresh dâdam.

I reported the problem to the manager.

5. Dropping را from the affected participant of شکست دادن

❌ تیم ما همان حریف اصلی شکست داد.

Incorrect — همان makes حریف اصلی an identified direct object, so it requires را; شکست is the nonverbal predicate element.

✅ تیم ما همان حریف اصلی را با اختلاف یک گل شکست داد.

tim-e mâ hamân harif-e asli râ bâ ekhtelâf-e yek gol shekast dâd.

Our team defeated that same main rival by one goal.

Key Takeaways

  • Identify the stored compound predicate before deciding which noun phrase is the object.
  • را marks a specific direct object, not the fixed nonverbal element simply because it is a noun.
  • A bare nonspecific object can remain unmarked; an identified object normally takes را.
  • Expanded nominal members show that compoundhood is a continuum, so learn licensed patterns rather than an absolute “never را” rule.
  • Use predicate frames and multiple diagnostics when word order, recipients, or clitics make the structure ambiguous.
