Persian does not divide noun phrases with a simple equivalent of English a versus the. یک yek, the suffix ی -i, bare nouns, demonstratives, discourse accessibility, and object marker را contribute different pieces of the interpretation. A noun can be indefinite but specific: the listener may not know its identity even though the speaker has one particular referent in mind.
This page treats their interaction as one system; Specific Indefinites with یک + ـی develops the information-structure analysis further.
This distinction explains forms such as پزشکی را میشناسم که شبها رایگان کار میکند: “I know a doctor who works for free at night.” The doctor is indefinite for the listener but specific enough for the speaker to continue describing and to mark as a direct object with را.
Definiteness and specificity are different questions
Ask two questions separately:
- Can speaker and listener identify the referent from the discourse or situation? If yes, it is discourse-definite.
- Does the speaker have a particular individual or bounded set in mind? If yes, it is specific.
| Form | Common contribution | Possible English rendering |
|---|---|---|
| کتاب خریدم | bare, number-neutral/nonspecific object | I bought a book/books |
| یک کتاب خریدم | one or an introduced book | I bought one/a book |
| کتابی خریدم | explicit indefinite, often discourse-introducing | I bought a book |
| کتاب را خریدم | accessible specific direct object | I bought the book |
| پزشکی را میشناسم | specific indefinite direct object | I know a certain doctor |
Bare nouns can be number-neutral
A bare object next to the verb often describes an activity or nonspecific acquisition rather than one individuated item. کتاب خریدم can report book-buying without fixing whether one or several books were involved.
برای سفر کتاب خریدم.
barâ-ye safar ketâb kharidam.
I bought a book or books for the trip; the quantity and identity are not foregrounded.
مهمان داریم، پس میوه بخر.
mehmân dârim, pas mive bekhar.
We have guests, so buy fruit.
English requires an article or plural marking with many count nouns. Persian can leave the nominal bare because the event type matters more than an individuated object.
یک introduces one or an indefinite referent
یک is both the numeral “one” and an indefinite determiner. Context and stress decide whether counting is prominent. یک کتاب خریدم may answer “How many?” or simply introduce a book into the discourse.
یک کتاب دربارهی معماری خریدم.
yek ketâb darbâre-ye me'mâri kharidam.
I bought a book about architecture.
فقط یک صندلی خالی باقی مانده است.
faqat yek sandali-ye khâli bâqi mânde ast.
Only one empty seat remains.
In the second sentence, فقط forces the numeral reading. In the first, exact cardinality may be less central.
In (informal, regional: Tehran) speech, یک commonly reduces to یه:
یه کتاب خوب پیدا کردم.
ye ketâb-e khub peydâ kardam.
I found a good book. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Indefinite ی marks an indefinite phrase
The suffix ی attaches at the right edge of the nominal expression. With a simple noun, کتابی is ketâb-i; with a following adjective, کتاب خوبی is ketâb-e khub-i. This suffix can introduce a new referent or select an unspecified member of a class. Its exact specificity effect is context-sensitive rather than a mechanical “specific” switch.
کتابی روی میز بود که نام نویسنده نداشت.
ketâb-i ru-ye miz bud ke nâm-e nevisande nadâsht.
There was a book on the table that did not have the author's name.
کتاب خوبی برای تعطیلات پیدا کردم.
ketâb-e khub-i barâ-ye ta'tilât peydâ kardam.
I found a good book for the holidays.
The suffix follows the adjective in the second example because it scopes over the complete noun phrase. It is not the same ی as derivational adjectival ی or the written ezâfe carrier after a vowel.
یک ... ی can foreground a particular indefinite
Combining preverbal یک with final ی often introduces a salient “certain” referent, especially in narrative or before a relative clause: یک پزشکی آمده بود که.... The identity is not shared with the listener, but the speaker treats the person as a particular participant.
یک پزشکی آمده بود که همه او را میشناختند.
yek pezeshk-i âmade bud ke hame u râ mi-shenâkhtand.
A certain doctor had come whom everyone knew.
یک نامهای رسید که مسیر سفر را عوض کرد.
yek nâme-i resid ke masir-e safar râ avaz kard.
A certain letter arrived that changed the course of the trip.
This combination is not obligatory for every English a. Overusing it makes ordinary new referents sound narratively singled out.
را marks specific direct objects, not definiteness everywhere
را follows a direct object that is treated as specific or discourse-prominent. It can occur with a definite object, a demonstrative, or a specific indefinite. It does not mark subjects, objects of prepositions, or every noun translated with English the.
کتاب را دیروز خریدم.
ketâb râ diruz kharidam.
I bought the contextually identifiable book yesterday.
پزشکی را میشناسم که شبها رایگان کار میکند.
pezeshk-i râ mi-shenâsam ke shab-hâ râygân kâr mi-konad.
I know a doctor who works for free at night.
The second doctor is not necessarily identifiable to the listener, yet the speaker has a particular doctor in mind. That is why “را equals the” fails.
One noun phrase can accumulate cues
Consider آن یک کتاب قدیمی را: distal demonstrative makes the referent accessible, یک contrasts one item, ezâfe links قدیمی, and را marks the entire specific object. Each element has its own job.
آن یک کتاب قدیمی را نگه داشتم و بقیه را بخشیدم.
ân yek ketâb-e qadimi râ negah dâshtam va baqiye râ bakhshidam.
I kept that one old book and gave the rest away.
This is not Persian imitating a stack of English articles. Demonstrative, numeral contrast, modification, and object marking compose a precise discourse instruction.
Discourse changes later reference
An indefinite can introduce a participant; a later bare noun can be definite because that participant is now accessible.
مردی وارد شد و کنار پنجره نشست.
mard-i vâred shod va kenâr-e panjare neshast.
A man entered and sat beside the window.
مرد کیف کوچکی همراه داشت.
mard keyf-e kuchak-i hamrâh dâsht.
The man had a small bag with him.
The second مرد has no article-like morpheme, yet discourse supplies a definite reading. کیف کوچکی introduces another indefinite.
A short exchange about a specific indefinite
کسی را میشناسی که این متن را ترجمه کند؟
kas-i râ mi-shenâsi ke in matn râ tarjome konad?
Do you know someone who could translate this text?
بله، مترجمی را میشناسم که در تبریز زندگی میکند.
bale, motarjem-i râ mi-shenâsam ke dar tabriz zendegi mi-konad.
Yes, I know a translator who lives in Tabriz.
The question need not identify anyone, while the answer commits to one particular translator.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating یک as a mandatory article
✅ من یک میوه برای مهمانی خریدم.
man yek mive barâ-ye mehmâni kharidam.
I bought one piece or kind of fruit for the party; this is grammatical when one is intended.
✅ من برای مهمانی میوه خریدم.
man barâ-ye mehmâni mive kharidam.
I bought fruit for the party.
Both sentences are grammatical. The mistake is inserting یک mechanically when the intended activity is number-neutral.
2. Equating را with English “the”
❌ با مرد را صحبت کردم.
Incorrect — the noun is inside a prepositional phrase, so را cannot serve as a definite article.
✅ با مردی دربارهی کار صحبت کردم.
bâ mard-i darbâre-ye kâr sohbat kardam.
I spoke with a man about work.
3. Marking a subject with را
❌ یک مردی را وارد شد.
Incorrect — را marks a direct object, but یک مردی is the subject of وارد شد.
✅ یک مردی وارد شد و سراغ شما را گرفت.
yek mard-i vâred shod va sorâgh-e shomâ râ gereft.
A certain man came in and asked for you.
4. Misreading a post-را adverb as an attributive adjective
✅ کتاب را خوب خریدم.
ketâb râ khub kharidam.
I bought the book well or at a good price; خوب modifies the buying event here, not کتاب.
✅ کتاب خوبی را که معرفی کردی خریدم.
ketâb-e khub-i râ ke mo'arrefi kardi kharidam.
I bought a good book that you recommended.
5. Assuming every ی makes the referent specific
The claim that every noun ending in indefinite ی must denote someone or something known to the speaker is false: interpretation remains context-sensitive.
✅ شاید کسی فردا تماس بگیرد.
shâyad kas-i fardâ tamâs begirad.
Perhaps someone will call tomorrow; no particular person need be intended.
Key Takeaways
- Definiteness is shared identifiability; specificity is commitment to a particular referent.
- Bare nouns can be number-neutral, یک can count or introduce, and final ی marks an indefinite phrase.
- یک ... ی often foregrounds a particular new participant, but it is not required for every indefinite.
- را marks specific direct objects, including some indefinites; it is not a general definite article.
- Discourse can make a later bare noun definite without adding any article-like word.
