In a neutral Persian clause, a direct object stands before the verb: مریم کتاب را خواند “Maryam read the book.” Definite or otherwise discourse-identifiable objects normally take را after the complete object phrase. A speaker can also use را to single out a particular indefinite object, while a bare or newly introduced nonspecific object commonly appears without را and stays especially close to the predicate.
English learners must separate two questions. Word order asks where the object goes; را asks how the speaker presents its reference. Persian is normally SOV whether the object is کتاب “a book/books” or این کتاب را “this book.”
The neutral object zone
The most reliable A2 template is:
| Object type | Neutral pattern | Example | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| bare/nonspecific | subject + object + verb | سارا کتاب خرید | Sara bought a book/books |
| indefinite | subject + یک/ـی object + verb | سارا یک کتاب خرید | Sara bought a book |
| specific/identifiable | subject + object + را + verb | سارا آن کتاب را خرید | Sara bought that book |
امروز برای سفر کمی میوه خریدم.
emruz barâ-ye safar kami mive kharidam.
Today I bought some fruit for the trip. (neutral standard; nonspecific object without را)
در ایستگاه یک مجله خریدم.
dar istgâh yek majalle kharidam.
I bought a magazine at the station. (neutral standard; newly introduced indefinite object)
مجلهای را که معرفی کردی خریدم.
majalle-i râ ke mo'arrefi kardi kharidam.
I bought a magazine that you recommended. (neutral standard; the relative clause singles it out)
The third object is grammatically indefinite but referentially specific: the speaker means one particular magazine. Persian را therefore does not equal English the. Articles and object marking organize reference differently.
را follows the complete noun phrase
را is a postposition. It comes after the noun and every adjective, possessor, numeral, or relative clause that belongs inside the object phrase:
| Complete object phrase | Marked edge | Clause |
|---|---|---|
| این پیام کوتاه | این پیام کوتاه را | این پیام کوتاه را بخوان |
| کتاب جدید سارا | کتاب جدید سارا را | کتاب جدید سارا را پس دادم |
| هر دو بلیت | هر دو بلیت را | هر دو بلیت را خریدم |
این پیام کوتاه را قبل از جلسه دوباره بخوان.
in payâm-e kutâh râ qabl az jalase dobâre bekhân.
Read this short message again before the meeting. (neutral standard; را closes the full object phrase)
کتاب تازهی استادم را فردا پس میدهم.
ketâb-e tâze-ye ostâd-am râ fardâ pas mi-daham.
I will return my professor's new book tomorrow. (neutral standard; را after an ezâfe chain)
Moving را after the first noun would close the phrase too early. It belongs to the right edge of the object phrase, not to the lexical noun alone. The first orientation is reviewed on The Postposition را.
Bare objects stay close to the predicate
A bare object often forms a tight unit with the verb: کتاب خواندن “read books/a book,” قهوه خوردن “drink coffee,” نامه نوشتن “write letters/a letter.” It introduces an activity or an unspecific participant rather than retrieving a known individual.
شبها قبل از خواب کتاب میخوانم.
shab-hâ qabl az khâb ketâb mi-khânam.
At night I read before going to sleep. (neutral standard; bare object describes the activity)
پیش از رسیدن مهمانها چای تازه درست کردم.
pish az residan-e mehmân-hâ chây-e tâze dorost kardam.
Before the guests arrived, I made fresh tea. (neutral standard; nonspecific substance object)
Specific را-marked objects are more independent and move more readily for topic or contrast. A bare object can be fronted in special contexts, but that is not the neutral beginner pattern. Keep it beside the predicate unless discourse provides a reason to move it.
Objects with compound predicates
In a compound predicate, the direct object normally precedes the complete nonverbal-element-plus-light-verb unit:
| Object | Compound predicate | Complete clause |
|---|---|---|
| گزارش را | بررسی کردن | گزارش را بررسی کردم |
| اتاق را | تمیز کردن | اتاق را تمیز کردیم |
| پیشنهاد را | قبول کردن | پیشنهاد را قبول کردند |
The nonverbal element is not automatically the direct object. In گزارش را بررسی کردم, گزارش را is the object; بررسی کردم is the predicate. The entire predicate determines transitivity.
کارشناس مدارک بیمه را پیش از ظهر با دقت بررسی کرد.
kârshenâs madârek-e bime râ pish az zohr bâ deqqat barrasi kard.
The specialist carefully examined the insurance documents before noon. (formal-neutral; object before a compound predicate)
پیشنهادشان را قبول نکردیم.
pishnehâd-eshân râ qabul na-kardim.
We did not accept their proposal. (neutral standard; possessive clitic inside the object)
An object pronoun can also be expressed by a clitic elsewhere in the predicate, but that is a separate placement system. At A2, a full noun phrase plus را is the clearest template.
Placement among time, place, and manner phrases
A common neutral order is time + subject + place + object + manner + verb. This is a tendency, not a chain of compulsory slots:
دیروز مریم در کتابخانه مقاله را کامل خواند.
diruz maryam dar ketâbkhâne maqâle râ kâmel khând.
Yesterday Maryam read the article in full at the library. (neutral standard)
The object remains before the verb even when other material intervenes. A short manner adverb commonly appears immediately before the predicate, while a topic-like را phrase may occur earlier.
این مقاله را مریم دیروز در کتابخانه خواند.
in maqâle râ maryam diruz dar ketâbkhâne khând.
As for this article, Maryam read it yesterday at the library. (standard; marked topical object before the subject)
This second order is marked but natural. را travels with the object. SOV is the neutral template, not a ban on discourse-motivated movement.
Standard and Tehran forms
Standard writing and careful speech use را, pronounced râ. Everyday Tehran has رو or attached ـو (informal: Tehran). The marker still follows the full object phrase.
— اون فیلمو دیدی؟ — آره، دیشب دیدمش.
— un film-o didi? — âre, dishab didam-esh.
— Did you see that film? — Yeah, I saw it last night. (informal: Tehran; ـو and an object clitic)
Do not mix رو with formal verbal morphology in planned standard prose. Register changes the form, not the object's relation to the verb.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English SVO order
⚠️ سارا خواند گزارش را.
sârâ khând gozâresh râ.
Possible only as a marked literary or afterthought order; it is not the neutral A2 pattern for ‘Sara read the report.’
✅ سارا گزارش هفتگی را صبح خواند.
sârâ gozâresh-e haftegi râ sobh khând.
Sara read the weekly report in the morning.
2. Putting را before the object
❌ من را این پیام خواندم.
Incorrect — را is a postposition after the complete object.
✅ من این پیام را دو بار خواندم.
man in payâm râ do bâr khândam.
I read this message twice.
3. Inserting را inside an ezâfe chain
❌ کتاب را جدید استادم را پس دادم.
Incorrect — one را closes the entire object phrase کتاب جدید استادم.
✅ کتاب جدید استادم را دیروز پس دادم.
ketâb-e jadid-e ostâd-am râ diruz pas dâdam.
I returned my professor's new book yesterday.
4. Marking a prepositional complement as a direct object
❌ به همکارم را تلفن کردم.
Incorrect — همکارم is already the complement of به and cannot take را in this frame.
✅ بعد از جلسه به همکارم تلفن کردم.
ba'd az jalase be hamkâr-am telefon kardam.
I called my colleague after the meeting.
