A neutral Persian noun phrase has two differently ordered zones. Demonstratives, numerals, and many quantifiers come before the head noun; descriptive adjectives and possessors normally follow it through ezâfe. Thus این دو کتاب جدید استاد من means “these two new books of my professor.”
English distributes the same information differently: these and two come before books, but new also comes before it, and my professor's can come first of all. Persian begins the ezâfe chain with the head and expands rightward. The learner's task is to know which material belongs on which side.
The two-zone template
| Left zone | Head | Right ezâfe zone | Complete phrase |
|---|---|---|---|
| demonstrative | noun | adjective | این کتاب جدید |
| numeral | noun | adjective | دو کتاب جدید |
| demonstrative + numeral | noun | adjective + possessor | این دو کتاب جدید استاد |
| quantifier | noun | possessor | هر کتاب استاد |
The demonstrative and numeral do not take ezâfe before the noun: این کتاب, not اینِ کتاب; دو کتاب, not دوِ کتاب. Ezâfe begins after the head: این کتابِ جدید.
این کتاب جدید برای کلاس فرداست.
in ketâb-e jadid barâ-ye kelâs-e fardâst.
This new book is for tomorrow's class. (neutral standard; demonstrative before head, adjective after)
آن سه پنجرهی بزرگ رو به حیاط باز میشوند.
ân se panjare-ye bozorg ru be hayât bâz mi-shavand.
Those three large windows open onto the yard. (neutral standard; demonstrative + numeral + head + adjective)
این دو عکس قدیمی پدربزرگم را قاب کردم.
in do aks-e qadimi-ye pedarbozorg-am râ qâb kardam.
I framed these two old photographs of my grandfather. (neutral standard; left zone plus ezâfe chain)
Head noun before adjective
Ordinary descriptive adjectives follow the noun and are joined by ezâfe: ماشین قرمز mâshin-e qermez, خانهی کوچک khâne-ye kuchek. Adjectives do not change for number or gender.
یک ماشین قرمز جلوی خانه پارک شده است.
yek mâshin-e qermez jelow-ye khâne pârk shode ast.
A red car is parked in front of the house. (neutral standard)
چند صندلی خالی کنار پنجره پیدا کردیم.
chand sandali-ye khâli kenâr-e panjare peydâ kardim.
We found several empty chairs by the window. (neutral standard)
The linker after a consonant is normally unwritten but pronounced: ماشینِ قرمز. After silent ه, standard orthography writes هی: خانهی کوچک. Review the basic sound and spelling on Ezâfe: The Invisible Linker.
Possessors follow what they possess
The possessed head comes first: کتاب سارا “Sara's book,” دوست برادرم “my brother's friend.” If an adjective describes the possessed noun, it normally comes before the possessor in the chain: کتاب جدید سارا “Sara's new book.”
کیف سیاه خواهرم روی صندلی است.
kif-e siyâh-e khâhar-am ru-ye sandali ast.
My sister's black bag is on the chair. (neutral standard; head + adjective + possessor)
شمارهی جدید دفتر پزشک را یادداشت کردم.
shomâre-ye jadid-e daftar-e pezeshk râ yâddâsht kardam.
I wrote down the doctor's office's new number. (formal-neutral; multi-link chain)
Every nonfinal member links forward. In شمارهی جدیدِ دفترِ پزشک, the head شماره is narrowed by جدید, then دفتر, then پزشک. The final possessor closes the chain.
Persian does not mark brackets overtly, so a long chain can be ambiguous. Good writers split a chain when world knowledge does not make the attachment clear.
Demonstratives point to the whole phrase
این and آن precede the head but semantically identify the entire expanded phrase: این خانهی بزرگ مریم “this large house of Maryam's.” They do not insert themselves inside an ezâfe chain.
آن دوست قدیمی پدرم هنوز در تبریز زندگی میکند.
ân dust-e qadimi-ye pedar-am hanuz dar tabriz zendegi mi-konad.
That old friend of my father still lives in Tabriz. (neutral standard)
این نسخهی کامل گزارش را برای مدیر بفرست.
in noskhe-ye kâmel-e gozâresh râ barâ-ye modir beferest.
Send this complete version of the report to the manager. (neutral standard)
The object marker را follows the whole phrase, after the final modifier or possessor. It is outside the ezâfe chain.
Numerals and quantifiers
Cardinal numerals and چند precede a normally singular-count noun: سه کتاب, چند سؤال. Persian does not ordinarily pluralize that noun after a numeral. هر also precedes a singular noun: هر روز، هر دانشجو.
| Quantifier type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| cardinal | number + singular noun | چهار صندلی خالی |
| indefinite count | چند
| چند سؤال مهم |
| distributive | هر
| هر دانشجوی جدید |
| totality | همهی
| همهی کتابهای جدید |
همه links to its noun with visible همهی. That noun is commonly plural when a countable set is intended: همهی دانشجوها. This pattern differs from the numeral construction.
هر دانشجوی جدید یک کارت کتابخانه میگیرد.
har dâneshju-ye jadid yek kârt-e ketâbkhâne mi-girad.
Every new student receives a library card. (neutral standard; هر + singular noun)
همهی پروندههای قدیمی اداره را بررسی کردیم.
hame-ye parvande-hâ-ye qadimi-ye edâre râ barrasi kardim.
We reviewed all the office's old files. (formal-neutral; totality + plural + ezâfe chain)
Chain order controls scope
The position of a modifier guides what it describes. Compare عکس قدیمی دوست مریم “the old photo of Maryam's friend” with عکس دوست قدیمی مریم “the photo of Maryam's old friend.” قدیمی attaches most naturally to the noun immediately before it.
عکس قدیمی دوست مریم در نمایشگاه بود.
aks-e qadimi-ye dust-e maryam dar namâyeshgâh bud.
The old photo of Maryam's friend was in the exhibition. (neutral standard; old describes photo)
عکس دوست قدیمی مریم را دیروز پیدا کردم.
aks-e dust-e qadimi-ye maryam râ diruz peydâ kardam.
I found the photo of Maryam's old friend yesterday. (neutral standard; old describes friend)
Ezâfe links words but does not eliminate every structural ambiguity. With three or four possessors, recast the phrase rather than expecting stress alone to show all attachments. The detailed parsing method appears on Building Two- and Three-Link Ezâfe Chains.
Attributive phrase versus predicate
خانهی بزرگ is a noun phrase “the big house.” خانه بزرگ است is a clause “the house is big.” The visible ی after خانه and the final copula distinguish the structures.
— کدام خانه را اجاره کردید؟ — همان خانهی کوچک نزدیک دانشگاه را.
— kodâm khâne râ ejâre kardid? — hamân khâne-ye kuchek-e nazdik-e dâneshgâh râ.
— Which house did you rent? — That same small house near the university. (neutral conversation; noun-phrase answer)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting an ordinary adjective before the noun
❌ این جدید کتاب مال من است.
Incorrect — the demonstrative precedes the head, but the descriptive adjective follows it.
✅ این کتاب جدید مال من است.
in ketâb-e jadid mâl-e man ast.
This new book is mine.
2. Putting the possessor before the possessed noun
❌ سارا کیف سیاه روی میز است.
Incorrect for ‘Sara's black bag’ — the possessed head comes first in an ezâfe chain.
✅ کیف سیاه سارا روی میز است.
kif-e siyâh-e sârâ ru-ye miz ast.
Sara's black bag is on the table.
3. Pluralizing a noun after a numeral
❌ سه کتابها روی میز بود.
Incorrect — after a cardinal numeral, the count noun is normally singular.
✅ سه کتاب جدید روی میز بود.
se ketâb-e jadid ru-ye miz bud.
Three new books were on the table.
4. Inserting را before the chain ends
❌ نسخهی را کامل گزارش فرستادم.
Incorrect — را follows the complete object phrase نسخهی کامل گزارش.
✅ نسخهی کامل گزارش را صبح فرستادم.
noskhe-ye kâmel-e gozâresh râ sobh ferestâdam.
I sent the complete version of the report this morning.
Key Takeaways

- Ordinary adjectives and possessors follow the head through ezâfe.
- A useful full template is demonstrative + numeral/quantifier + head + adjective + possessor.
- Numerals normally take a singular count noun; همهی commonly introduces a plural set.
- Modifier position inside an ezâfe chain controls its most natural scope.
