Persian adverbials are mobile, but neutral clauses have strong placement tendencies. Time expressions often come early, place phrases occupy the middle field, and manner adverbs stay close to the final predicate: امروز مریم در خانه آرام کار میکند “Maryam is working quietly at home today.”
English speakers should not search for one rigid slot equivalent to the position after an English verb. Persian normally keeps the finite verb at the end. Adverbs arrange the circumstances before it, and moving one toward the beginning or the verb changes topic and focus.
A useful neutral map
No single sentence needs every slot, but this map is a reliable starting point:
| Zone | Frequent content | Example |
|---|---|---|
| early frame | day, date, broad time, topic-like setting | امروز، هفتهی آینده |
| subject zone | overt subject when needed | مریم |
| middle field | place, goal, source, object | در خانه، گزارش را |
| pre-predicate zone | manner, degree, short frequency expression | آرام، کامل، همیشه |
| right edge | simple or compound predicate | میخواند، بررسی میکند |
امروز مریم در خانه آرام کار میکند.
emruz maryam dar khâne ârâm kâr mi-konad.
Maryam is working quietly at home today. (neutral standard; time–subject–place–manner–predicate)
پسفردا صبح نسخهی نهایی را برایتان میفرستم.
pas-fardâ sobh noskhe-ye nahâyi râ barâ-ye-tân mi-ferestam.
I will send you the final version the morning after tomorrow. (neutral standard; subject omitted, time early)
کارشناس گزارش را با دقت بررسی کرد.
kârshenâs gozâresh râ bâ deqqat barrasi kard.
The specialist examined the report carefully. (formal-neutral; manner before compound predicate)
Time expressions usually frame the clause
Calendar time and broad temporal settings naturally occur near the beginning: دیروز، فردا صبح، سال گذشته، بعد از کلاس. They tell the listener when to locate everything that follows.
بعد از کلاس با دوستم به کتابخانه رفتم.
ba'd az kelâs bâ dust-am be ketâbkhâne raftam.
After class I went to the library with my friend. (neutral standard; time frame first)
ما هفتهی آینده قرارداد را امضا میکنیم.
mâ hafte-ye âyande qarârdâd râ emzâ mi-konim.
We will sign the contract next week. (neutral standard; time after an overt subject)
Both positions are natural. Initial هفتهی آینده would make the coming week the discourse frame; after ما, it remains neutral information inside a statement about “us.” Time can also occur nearer the predicate when contrastive: قرارداد را فردا امضا میکنیم، نه امروز “We will sign the contract tomorrow, not today.”
Place and directional phrases occupy the middle field
Place expressions normally precede the final predicate. Their order relative to the object depends on weight, givenness, and meaning. A short place frame often comes before a nonspecific object; a specific را-marked object can precede a manner or place phrase.
در بازار کمی میوه خریدم.
dar bâzâr kami mive kharidam.
I bought some fruit at the bazaar. (neutral standard; place before a nonspecific object)
نامه را در کشوی میز گذاشتم.
nâme râ dar keshov-e miz gozâshtam.
I put the letter in the desk drawer. (neutral standard; specific object before goal/location)
بچهها در حیاط با توپ بازی میکنند.
bachche-hâ dar hayât bâ tup bâzi mi-konand.
The children are playing with a ball in the yard. (neutral standard; place before instrument/accompaniment)
Prepositions stay attached to their complements when the phrase moves: در حیاط, به دانشگاه, از اداره. Persian mobility does not permit leaving در behind.
Manner stays near the predicate
Short manner adverbs such as آرام، سریع، خوب، دقیق and phrases such as با دقت commonly stand immediately before a simple or compound predicate. This position makes their event scope clear.
لطفا در را آرام ببند.
lotfan dar râ ârâm beband.
Please close the door quietly. (polite neutral; manner next to simple verb)
پزشک وضعیت بیمار را کامل توضیح داد.
pezeshk vaz'iyat-e bimâr râ kâmel towzih dâd.
The doctor explained the patient's condition fully. (neutral standard; manner/extent before compound predicate)
With a light-verb construction, preserve the lexical predicate. آرام حرف زد is neutral “spoke quietly”; placing an ordinary manner adverb after the finite light verb sounds like an afterthought. More advanced internal focus patterns are covered on Adverb and Focus Placement in Light-Verb Constructions.
Frequency and habituality
Frequency words such as همیشه، معمولا، اغلب، گاهی، هرگز commonly precede the predicate. They can also occur earlier to frame the subject's routine.
من معمولا با مترو به دانشگاه میروم.
man ma'mulan bâ metro be dâneshgâh mi-ravam.
I usually go to the university by metro. (neutral standard; frequency before the middle field/predicate)
خواهرم همیشه قبل از خرید قیمتها را مقایسه میکند.
khâhar-am hamishe qabl az kharid qeymat-hâ râ moqâyese mi-konad.
My sister always compares prices before buying. (neutral standard)
من هرگز رمز بانکیام را برای کسی نمیفرستم.
man hargiz ramz-e bânki-am râ barâ-ye kasi nemi-ferestam.
I never send my bank password to anyone. (neutral standard; negative-polarity frequency adverb)
هرگز naturally accompanies negation. همیشه نمیرود can be scope-ambiguous between “doesn't always go” and, in some contexts, “always fails to go.” Use هرگز نمیرود for “never goes” and a fuller phrase such as همیشه نمیرود؛ فقط بعضی روزها میرود for “does not always go.”
Degree adverbs attach to what they grade
خیلی، کمی، کاملا، تقریبا normally precede the adjective, adverb, quantity, or gradable predicate they modify: خیلی خسته, کمی آرامتر, تقریبا تمام شد. Position identifies their scope.
بعد از سفر خیلی خسته بودیم.
ba'd az safar kheyli khaste budim.
We were very tired after the trip. (neutral standard; degree before adjective predicate)
کار بازسازی ساختمان تقریبا تمام شده است.
kâr-e bâzsâzi-ye sâkhtemân taqriban tamâm shode ast.
The building renovation is almost finished. (formal-neutral; degree before result predicate)
من این محله را خیلی دوست دارم.
man in mahalle râ kheyli dust dâram.
I like this neighborhood very much. (neutral standard; degree before the whole lexical predicate)
Mobility, topic, and focus
Moving an adverbial earlier makes it a frame or contrastive topic; keeping it near the predicate makes it part of the new event description.
در تهران معمولا با مترو رفتوآمد میکنم.
dar tehrân ma'mulan bâ metro raft-o-âmad mi-konam.
In Tehran I usually get around by metro. (neutral standard; place as topic frame)
من فقط امروز با ماشین آمدهام.
man faqat emruz bâ mâshin âmâde-am.
Only today have I come by car. (neutral standard; فقط focuses the time)
من امروز فقط با ماشین آمدهام، نه با مترو.
man emruz faqat bâ mâshin âmâde-am, na bâ metro.
Today I came only by car, not by metro. (neutral standard; فقط focuses the means)
The two sentences contain the same words but different focus domains. Persian order is flexible because position is meaningful, not because it is random.
Postverbal afterthoughts and register
Planned standard prose normally keeps adverbials before the verb. Spontaneous Tehran speech can add a time or place phrase after a completed clause as an afterthought: دیدمش، دیروز “I saw him/her—yesterday” (informal: Tehran). The pause matters; this is right-dislocation, not neutral SVO-style placement.
— کی باهاش حرف زدی؟ — دیروز عصر توی دانشگاه دیدمش و همونجا حرف زدیم.
— key bâhâsh harf zadi? — diruz asr tu-ye dâneshgâh didam-esh-o hamun-jâ harf zadim.
— When did you talk with them? — I saw them at the university yesterday afternoon, and we talked there. (informal: Tehran; ordinary preverbal adverbials)
Common Mistakes
1. Placing manner after the final verb in a neutral clause
❌ مریم گزارش را خواند با دقت آرام.
Incorrect neutral organization — the manner phrase belongs before the final verb, and آرام does not modify reading coherently here.
✅ مریم گزارش را با دقت خواند.
maryam gozâresh râ bâ deqqat khând.
Maryam read the report carefully.
2. Splitting a preposition from its place phrase
❌ خانه امروز در کار میکنم.
Incorrect — در must remain before خانه as one place phrase.
✅ امروز در خانه کار میکنم.
emruz dar khâne kâr mi-konam.
I am working at home today.
3. Putting a degree word after its adjective
❌ بعد از سفر خسته خیلی بودیم.
Incorrect neutral degree order — خیلی precedes the adjective it grades.
✅ پس از پرواز طولانی خیلی خسته بودیم.
pas az parvâz-e tulâni kheyli khaste budim.
We were very tired after the long flight.
4. Inserting manner inside a fixed compound without a focus reason
⚠️ او با مدیر حرف آرامی زد.
u bâ modir harf-e ârâmi zad.
Grammatical, but it means that he or she made a calm remark; for ‘spoke quietly,’ آرام modifies the whole compound and precedes حرف زدن.
✅ او با مدیر خیلی آرام حرف زد.
u bâ modir kheyli ârâm harf zad.
He or she spoke very quietly with the manager.
Key Takeaways
- Broad time frames tend to occur early; place phrases fill the middle field; manner stays close to the final predicate.
- Frequency usually precedes the predicate, while degree words immediately precede what they grade.
- Adverbials are mobile, but movement changes topic, contrast, or scope.
- Prepositions move with their complements, and compound predicates remain lexical units.
- Postverbal afterthoughts belong mainly to spontaneous speech, not neutral planned order.
