Persian coordinates parallel words, phrases, and clauses with و “and,” یا “or,” and اما “but.” A shared constituent need not be repeated when both coordinated parts clearly use it: مریم چای خورد و کتاب خواند shares the subject مریم; فرم را تکمیل و امضا کردم shares both the object and the light verb.
English uses similar coordination, but Persian subject omission and verb-final order create different compression points. The key is parallelism: coordinate constituents that do the same grammatical job, and repeat material when omission would hide agreement, polarity, or argument structure.
Coordinate like with like
| Unit coordinated | Persian pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nouns | noun + و + noun | چای و قهوه |
| adjectives | adjective + و + adjective | روشن و آرام |
| prepositional phrases | PP + و + PP | در خانه و در اداره |
| predicates | predicate + و + predicate | آمد و نشست |
| clauses | clause + اما + clause | زنگ زدم، اما جواب نداد |
برای صبحانه چای یا قهوه میخواهی؟
barâ-ye sobhâne chây yâ qahve mi-khâhi?
Would you like tea or coffee for breakfast? (neutral conversation; coordinated nouns)
اتاق جدید روشن و آرام است.
otâq-e jadid rowshan va ârâm ast.
The new room is bright and quiet. (neutral standard; coordinated predicate adjectives)
او هم در خانه و هم در کتابخانه درس میخواند.
u ham dar khâne va ham dar ketâbkhâne dars mi-khânad.
He or she studies both at home and at the library. (neutral standard; paired prepositional phrases)
هم ... هم ... makes additive pairing explicit. It is useful when two long constituents might otherwise be parsed unevenly.
و joins additions
In careful formal reading, conjunction و may be pronounced va. In ordinary Iranian speech it is often unstressed o or vo, depending on the surrounding sounds (informal/careful-spoken variation). Standard spelling remains و in every register.
مریم نان و پنیر خرید.
maryam nân va panir kharid.
Maryam bought bread and cheese. (careful spoken standard; coordinated object nouns)
رضا وارد شد، سلام کرد و کنار پنجره نشست.
rezâ vâred shod, salâm kard va kenâr-e panjare neshast.
Reza came in, said hello, and sat by the window. (neutral narration; shared subject)
The second sentence states رضا once. All three third-singular verbs maintain him as subject. Repeating او before each verb would create unnecessary contrast. Persian's ordinary subject omission is reviewed on Subject Omission and Verb Agreement.
یا presents alternatives
یا links alternatives at the same structural level: چای یا قهوه, امروز یا فردا, میآیی یا میمانی؟ Context determines whether the alternatives are exclusive.
میتوانیم امروز عصر یا فردا صبح ملاقات کنیم.
mi-tavânim emruz asr yâ fardâ sobh molâqât konim.
We can meet this evening or tomorrow morning. (neutral standard; alternative time phrases)
خودت میآیی یا بلیت را برایت بفرستم؟
khod-at mi-âyi yâ belit râ barâ-yat beferestam?
Are you coming yourself, or should I send you the ticket? (neutral conversation; alternative clauses with different subjects)
When alternatives have different subjects or moods, keep both finite verbs. Sharing would erase necessary grammar.
اما marks contrast between clauses
اما normally joins contrasting propositions. It can begin the second clause and is commonly preceded by a Persian comma in planned writing. Both clauses keep whatever subjects and verbs clarity requires.
به سارا زنگ زدم، اما جواب نداد.
be sârâ zang zadam, ammâ javâb nadâd.
I called Sara, but she did not answer. (neutral standard; subject changes and is recovered from context)
اتوبوس دیر رسید، اما خوشبختانه پرواز را از دست ندادیم.
otobus dir resid, ammâ khoshbakhtâne parvâz râ az dast nadâdim.
The bus arrived late, but fortunately we did not miss the flight. (neutral standard; contrasting clauses)
Everyday speech also uses ولی “but” frequently (neutral/informal). This page concentrates on architecture; the fine pragmatic differences among linkers belong to a dedicated conjunction guide.
Sharing a subject
When coordinated predicates have the same subject, state it once and conjugate every finite verb for that subject:
بچهها شام خوردند، ظرفها را شستند و خوابیدند.
bachche-hâ shâm khordand, zarf-hâ râ shostand va khâbidand.
The children ate dinner, washed the dishes, and went to sleep. (neutral standard; shared plural subject)
The subject's agreement is not “shared” in the sense of appearing only once: خوردند، شستند، خوابیدند each carries plural agreement. Only the independent noun phrase is omitted after the first predicate.
If the subject changes, express the new one when context cannot recover it:
مینا شام را آماده کرد و علی میز را چید.
minâ shâm râ âmâde kard va ali miz râ chid.
Mina prepared dinner, and Ali set the table. (neutral standard; two overt subjects)
Sharing an object or verb
A direct object may scope over two coordinated predicates when both select it: گزارش را خواندم و خلاصه کردم. Repeating را is unnecessary because گزارش را is one shared phrase.
گزارش را خواندم و برای مدیر خلاصه کردم.
gozâresh râ khândam va barâ-ye modir kholâse kardam.
I read the report and summarized it for the manager. (neutral standard; shared object)
When parallel compound predicates use the same light verb, Persian can express it once: فرم را تکمیل و امضا کردم. This is especially compact in formal writing.
درخواست عضویت را تکمیل و امضا کردم.
darkhâst-e ozviyat râ takmil va emzâ kardam.
I completed and signed the membership application. (formal-neutral; shared object and light verb)
Ellipsis works only if the final verb forms an established predicate with every coordinated element. تصمیم گرفتن and اعلام کردن require تصمیم گرفت و اعلام کرد, not a compressed form with one کرد. The advanced limits are detailed on Ellipsis of a Shared Light Verb.
Punctuation and scope
Two short items use و without a comma: چای و قهوه. In a series of three or more, Persian commas separate earlier items and و introduces the final item: نان، پنیر و میوه. A comma does not replace و between the final pair.
برای سفر نان، پنیر، میوه و آب خریدیم.
barâ-ye safar nân, panir, mive va âb kharidim.
We bought bread, cheese, fruit, and water for the trip. (neutral standard; list punctuation)
Negation can make sharing ambiguous. گزارش را بررسی و تأیید نکرد may mean neither action occurred or that the combined sequence did not. If one action is positive and the other negative, repeat the verb: بررسی کرد، اما تأیید نکرد.
طرح را بررسی کردیم، اما تصویب نکردیم.
tarh râ barrasi kardim, ammâ tasvib na-kardim.
We reviewed the plan but did not approve it. (formal-neutral; mixed polarity kept explicit)
A short dialogue
— امشب خونه میمونی یا میای بیرون؟ — اول شام میخورم و بعد بهتون زنگ میزنم.
— emshab khune mi-muni yâ miyây birun? — avval shâm mi-khoram-o ba'd be-tun zang mi-zanam.
— Are you staying home tonight or coming out? — I'll eat dinner first and then call you. (informal: Tehran; shared omitted subjects within each turn)
Common Mistakes
1. Repeating the subject before every action
⚠️ مریم رسید و مریم نشست و مریم چای خورد.
maryam resid va maryam neshast va maryam chây khord.
Grammatical, but repeated مریم sounds contrastive, insistent, or childlike rather than like neutral continuous narration.
✅ مریم رسید، نشست و چای خورد.
maryam resid, neshast va chây khord.
Maryam arrived, sat down, and drank tea.
2. Using singular agreement with coordinated human subjects
❌ علی و مریم به جلسه آمد.
Incorrect — coordinated human subjects require plural agreement.
✅ علی و مریم به جلسه آمدند.
ali va maryam be jalase âmadand.
Ali and Maryam came to the meeting.
3. Sharing an incompatible light verb
❌ دربارهی سفر تصمیم و اعلام کردیم.
Incorrect — تصمیم selects گرفتن, while اعلام selects کردن.
✅ دربارهی سفر تصمیم گرفتیم و نتیجه را اعلام کردیم.
darbâre-ye safar tasmim gereftim va natije râ e'lâm kardim.
We made a decision about the trip and announced the result.
4. Replacing the final و with a comma
⚠️ نان، پنیر، میوه خریدم.
nân, panir, mive kharidam.
Understandable as a clipped or list-like delivery, but planned standard prose normally introduces the final item with و.
✅ نان، پنیر و میوه خریدم.
nân, panir va mive kharidam.
I bought bread, cheese, and fruit.
Key Takeaways
- Coordinate parallel words, phrases, predicates, or clauses with و، یا، اما.
- Shared subjects are omitted after the first clause, but each finite verb retains agreement.
- Objects and light verbs can be shared only when every predicate selects the same structure.
- Repeat material when subjects, polarity, tense, or lexical frames differ.
- Use commas within longer lists and و before the final item.
