Cardinals from Zero to Twenty

Persian cardinal numbers answer چند؟ “how many?” This page teaches the words and Persian digits from صفر “zero” through بیست “twenty,” including the irregular teens, their careful Iranian pronunciation, and the basic pattern number + singular noun.

English speakers face three immediate differences. Persian running text uses Persian digits ۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹; the teens are single words that cannot always be predicted from one through ten; and a noun directly counted by a cardinal normally stays singular: سه کتاب, literally “three book,” not سه کتاب‌ها.

Zero through ten

نه “nine” and negative نه “no/not” have the same unpointed spelling. Their vowels and syntactic positions distinguish them: number نه is noh, while negative answer نه is na. Context normally makes the reading immediate.

Eleven through twenty

The words from eleven through nineteen end historically and visibly in ده, but their first element is not always the free form of the smaller number. Treat each teen as one word and memorize its established stem.

There is no fully reliable shortcut: یازده is not built from modern یک, and دوازده is not simply دو + ده. The consonants also contract in پانزده، شانزده، هفده، هجده. Memorize the table in two rhythmic groups, eleven through fifteen and sixteen through twenty.

In careful citation pronunciation, stress normally falls on the final syllable of a multisyllabic cardinal, including the -dah syllable of the teens. Sentence focus can override this ordinary word stress. Everyday Tehrani speech often compresses the teen forms, especially پانزده and شانزده, but learners should first master the written-standard forms in the table; the spelling does not change to follow every casual reduction.

A counted noun remains singular

The core noun phrase is cardinal + singular noun: دو دفتر، هفت روز، بیست صندلی. The numeral already contributes plural quantity, so adding ـها or ـان to the directly counted noun is normally redundant and ungrammatical in neutral standard Persian.

The singular form of the noun does not mean that the referent is singular. A counted human subject is semantically plural and normally takes a plural verb, as دانشجو ... ماندند shows. Inanimate agreement has additional register-sensitive options, treated on Quantifier and Numeral Syntax.

یک is a cardinal “one” and can also help introduce an indefinite referent. Persian has no article system identical to English a/the, so do not assume that every English a must become یک or that every یک is semantically empty.

Persian digits and number words

In Iranian Persian running text, write ۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹, not ASCII 0123456789 or Arabic-Indic ٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩. A figure and its word have the same cardinal grammar: ۳ کتاب and سه کتاب both use singular کتاب. The Persian Digits page explains Unicode identity and bidirectional typing.

Linking و and the boundary at twenty

The cardinals from zero through twenty are lexical words; no و appears inside the teens. Above twenty, Persian joins a ten and a smaller unit with written و, pronounced unstressed -o- in the compound: بیست و یک bist-o-yek “twenty-one.” Omitting it produces neither the standard compound nor an ordinary coordination.

The final component bears the main lexical stress of the compound. A careful speaker may give و more vowel quality in emphatic reading, but numeric linking و is normally o, not the full independent conjunction reading va.

Do not reuse one pattern for every numerical expression

Dates, decimals, fractions, and approximations contain cardinal words, but each has its own structure. The following is a recognition preview, not a full treatment:

English month–day dates and decimal point do not supply Persian word order or vocabulary. Notice also the contrast between required و inside exact بیست و یک and absent و in approximate ده دوازده “ten or twelve, roughly.”
