Building Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands

Persian builds most exact cardinals above twenty by arranging values from largest to smallest and joining every nonzero part with و: دویست و چهل و سه “243.” The written linker is the ordinary letter و, but inside a number it is normally pronounced as a short, unstressed -o- rather than the independent conjunction va.

The logic is additive. دویست و چهل و سه means “two hundred + forty + three.” English sometimes omits and in two hundred forty-three; standard Persian does not omit its numeric و. Once the round tens and irregular hundred forms are memorized, the same pattern scales through هزار “thousand” and میلیون “million.”

The round tens

The tens are lexical forms. Several cannot be predicted from the digits they contain, so there is no honest shortcut: learn them as a set.

70هفتادhaftâdهفتاد و سهhaftâd-o-se
80هشتادhashtâdهشتاد و ششhashtâd-o-shesh
90نودnavadنود و هشتnavad-o-hasht

این اتوبوس چهل و دو صندلی دارد.

in otobus chehel-o-do sandali dârad.

This bus has forty-two seats. (neutral standard)

شماره‌ی پرونده‌ی من هفتاد و شش است.

shomâre-ye parvande-ye man haftâd-o-shesh ast.

My file number is seventy-six. (neutral; a number used as a label)

The final unit is simply absent in an exact multiple of ten: هشتاد, not a phrase meaning “eight tens.” Do not add و صفر unless you are deliberately reading separate values or digits.

و is structural inside an exact number

Numeric و joins adjacent nonzero value groups: tens to units, hundreds to the remainder, and thousands to the remainder. It is written as a separate word, while fluent pronunciation attaches its short o rhythmically to the surrounding number words.

قبض این ماه نود و پنج هزار تومان شد.

qabz-e in mâh navad-o-panj hezâr tumân shod.

This month’s bill came to ninety-five thousand tomans. (neutral conversation)

روی این فرم عدد سی و هشت را بنویسید.

ru-ye in form adad-e si-o-hasht râ be-nevisid.

Write the number thirty-eight on this form. (careful instruction)

💡
In a fluent exact cardinal, hear و as part of the number’s internal architecture: si-o-hasht. Full va is possible in slow dictation or deliberate emphasis, but it is not the ordinary citation rhythm of 38.

Do not confuse numeric و with approximation. چهل و پنج is exactly 45; a loose range such as “forty or fifty” needs a different construction. Exact composition always descends through place values.

The hundreds

صد is “one hundred” without obligatory یک. یکصد is also correct (formal), especially in banking, legal, and administrative wording where the writer wants each place value explicit. In ordinary speech and prose, صد is the unmarked form.

دویست and پانصد are genuine lexical irregularities. Forms such as دو صد and پنج صد are not neutral modern Iranian cardinals. The round hundred is one word; a nonzero remainder follows with و.

کتاب سیصد و دوازده صفحه دارد.

ketâb sisad-o-davâzdah safhe dârad.

The book has three hundred and twelve pages. (neutral standard)

برای تعمیر آسانسور ششصد و هشتاد میلیون تومان بودجه لازم است.

barâ-ye ta'mir-e âsânsur sheshsad-o-hashtâd milyun tumân budje lâzem ast.

A budget of six hundred and eighty million tomans is needed to repair the elevator. (formal-neutral)

هزار and میلیون

هزار and میلیون follow a multiplier: سه هزار, دو میلیون. With 1,000, bare هزار is normal; یک هزار is possible when the value must be contrasted or made explicit, but it sounds needlessly heavy in most everyday contexts. With میلیون, یک میلیون is ordinary because the scale noun readily takes an explicit multiplier.

Place-value groups remain in descending order:

thousand group + و + remainderچهار هزار و نود4,090

جمعیت این شهر حدود یک میلیون و دویست هزار نفر است.

jam'iyyat-e in shahr hodud-e yek milyun-o-devist hezâr nafar ast.

The population of this city is about one million two hundred thousand. (formal-neutral estimate)

کد را اشتباه خواندی؛ چهار هزار و نوزده بود، نه چهار هزار و نود.

kod râ eshtebâh khândi; chahâr hezâr-o-nuzdah bud, na chahâr hezâr-o-navad.

You read the code incorrectly; it was 4,019, not 4,090. (neutral conversation; place-value contrast)

💡
Read from the largest nonzero group downward. Say the group, name its scale (میلیون، هزار), add و, and continue. Never reverse the order to imitate how another language groups numbers.

Digits, words, and labels

Persian prose uses Persian digits ۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹. Digit strings can denote quantities, but also labels such as room numbers, codes, and bus routes. A quantity is normally read as one cardinal; a code may be read digit by digit if that is how speakers identify it. Context, not the shapes alone, decides.

اتاق ۳۰۷ طبقه‌ی سوم است.

otâq-e sisad-o-haft tabaqe-ye sevvom ast.

Room 307 is on the third floor. (neutral; here the room label is read as a whole number)

The romanization of a genuinely variable label reading cannot honestly encode both options. For controlled pronunciation practice, spell the intended number in words; use figures when typography or real-world reading is the lesson. The Persian Digits page covers the Unicode forms and typing direction in detail.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting linking و

❌ این دستگاه چهل سه قطعه دارد.

Incorrect exact cardinal — tens and units must be linked by و.

✅ این دستگاه چهل و سه قطعه‌ی متحرک دارد.

in dastgâh chehel-o-se qet'e-ye motaharrak dârad.

This machine has forty-three moving parts.

2. Saying the linker as full va in ordinary fluent counting

❌ صد و بیست

sad VA bist

Misreading in ordinary fluent counting — numeric و is normally the weak linker -o-.

✅ قیمت بلیت صد و بیست هزار تومان است.

qeymat-e belit sad-o-bist hezâr tumân ast.

The ticket costs one hundred and twenty thousand tomans.

3. Building irregular hundreds word by word

❌ پنج صد نفر در نظرسنجی شرکت کردند.

Incorrect neutral modern form — 500 is the lexical word پانصد.

✅ پانصد نفر به پرسش‌نامه پاسخ دادند.

pânsad nafar be porsesh-nâme pâsokh dâdand.

Five hundred people answered the questionnaire.

4. Inserting یک before every صد or هزار

❌ من یک صد و یک هزار تومان پرداخت کردم.

Incorrect ordinary phrasing — bare صد and هزار already mean one hundred and one thousand in their scale positions.

✅ برای ثبت‌نام صد و یک هزار تومان پرداخت کردم.

barâ-ye sabt-nâm sad-o-yek hezâr tumân pardâkht kardam.

I paid one hundred and one thousand tomans for registration.

5. Using non-Persian digit shapes in Persian text

❌ شماره‌ی سفارش 245 است.

Incorrect Iranian Persian typography — the number is written with ASCII digits.

✅ شماره‌ی سفارش ۲۴۵ است.

shomâre-ye sefâresh devist-o-chehel-o-panj ast.

The order number is 245.

Key Takeaways

  • Memorize the round tens and the irregular hundreds دویست and پانصد.
  • Arrange values from largest to smallest and write و between nonzero groups.
  • Pronounce numeric و as weak -o- in ordinary fluent counting.
  • Bare صد and هزار normally express 100 and 1,000; یکصد is a marked formal alternative.
  • Use Persian digits in Persian text, and distinguish a numerical quantity from a code or label.
