Historical Persian texts can encode number in three very different ways: ordinary number words, learned Arabic-derived ordinals, and letters used as numerical symbols. The last system is called حساب ابجد “Abjad reckoning.” In a مادهتاریخ “chronogram,” the values of letters in a meaningful phrase add up to the year of an event.
These devices belong chiefly to (classical), (literary), epigraphic, and manuscript culture. Modern Iranian Persian uses ordinary cardinal and ordinal words plus Persian digits for everyday counting. The goal here is recognition and responsible interpretation, not the invention of new Abjad dates or the revival of Arabic morphology in modern prose.
Older and learned numeral vocabulary
Classical Persian shares most core number words with the modern language, but readers encounter older variants and more Arabic-derived ordinal vocabulary. Context and meter can favor a shortened form such as چار for modern چهار. Learned ordinals such as ثانی، ثالث، رابع occur in older prose, titles, enumerations, and fixed expressions.

The borrowed ordinal is lexical material inside Persian syntax. Do not add Arabic case endings, gender agreement, or a productive Arabic ordinal paradigm to a Persian sentence. A modern editor normally chooses دوم، سوم، چهارم unless preserving a quotation, title, or historically appropriate register. Review the ordinary system on Ordinals with ـم and ـمین.
The Abjad value table
Abjad assigns a conventional additive value to each letter in the older Arabic alphabetic order. The system is not positional like decimal notation: a letter contributes the same value wherever it occurs, and the total is the sum of all counted letters.

The four specifically Persian letters پ، چ، ژ، گ have no independent slots in the classical Arabic Abjad sequence. Some later calculators equate them with their base-shaped counterparts, but that convention is not safe to assume in a manuscript or inscription. State the convention or consult the edition before counting a phrase that contains them. The historical overview in the Encyclopaedia Iranica Abjad entry likewise notes the lack of independent traditional values for these added letters.

Abjad in manuscripts
Letters could mark numbered items, folios, sections, or values in technical tables. A scribe might draw a line above letters used numerically to distinguish them from surrounding words. Practice varies across period, region, genre, and hand, so an overline is evidence, not an absolute requirement.

Do not confuse Abjad with سیاق, a specialized historical notation used especially in accounts and administration. Both can represent numbers with nonmodern signs, but their forms and reading procedures differ. When the mark is uncertain, transcribe it as uncertain rather than silently converting it to a modern Persian digit.
Poetic dates and مادهتاریخ
A chronogram embeds a year in a phrase whose letter values sum to that year. Persian poets used chronograms for deaths, accessions, buildings, compositions, and other notable events. The device became especially prominent in post-classical Persian poetry and epigraphy, often in the final half-line with a clue such as “seek the date.”

This brief phrase comes from a chronogram by Hafez in his Divan for the death of the vizier Turanshah in 787 AH/1385 CE. The attested example is discussed in the Encyclopaedia Iranica entry on مادهتاریخ. It is cited here as a short public-domain fourteenth-century specimen, not offered as a modern productive model.

The resulting year is commonly a Hijri year, but the calendar must be established from the work, inscription, or edition. A numerical match alone does not prove that a phrase is intentional: spelling variants, omitted words, and disputed readings can change the sum. Editors should report which exact letters were counted.
Recognition-only editorial workflow
First transcribe the visible letters without normalizing them silently. Next identify whether the string is ordinary language, a numbered label, or a candidate chronogram. Then state the value convention, calculate the sum, and compare the proposed year with the historical context. Keep editorial emendation separate from what the witness actually shows.

Common Mistakes
1. Reading Abjad as positional decimal notation
❌ کاف در جایگاه دوم همیشه ارزش ۲۰۰ دارد.
Incorrect — Abjad letters have additive fixed values; position does not multiply کاف by ten.

2. Giving Persian-specific letters automatic classical values
