An unpointed Persian verb can preserve the consonants while concealing the vowels, morpheme boundaries, and sometimes the tense or mood. The string بود may represent bud “was” or historical bovad “is, may be”; برد may be bord “took” or barad in a historical present-stem reading. An editor who adds vowels, punctuation, or a modern paraphrase is therefore making an argument, not merely decorating the text.
The historical inventory follows the Encyclopaedia Iranica account of Early New Persian, which documents multiple “be” stems, variable present endings, and changing auxiliary constructions. All manuscript cases below are constructed demonstrations unless explicitly called a formula. Sigla الف، ب، ج are hypothetical; they do not represent real codices.
Keep four editorial layers separate
| Layer | What it records | Example treatment of بود |
|---|---|---|
| diplomatic transcription | letters and visible spacing of one witness | بود |
| normalized text | standard characters, controlled word division, editorial punctuation | بود |
| vocalized reading | one proposed pronunciation and parse | bud or bovad |
| modern paraphrase | meaning recast in current Persian | بود or باشد |
Only the last two layers must choose a reading. A diplomatic transcription should not insert a vowel sign or an editorial morpheme boundary merely because the editor expects bovad. Conversely, a learner edition that supplies audio must document which reading it voices.
در نسخه فقط بود نوشته شده است و مصحح آن را با خوانش دوهجایی گزارش میکند.
dar noskhe faqat bovad neveshte shode ast-o mosahheh ân râ bâ khân-esh-e do-hejâyi gozâresh mi-konad.
The manuscript has only بود, and the editor reports it with the two-syllable reading bovad. (modern philological statement; target text remains unpointed)
Homographic past and present-stem forms
The most consequential ambiguity often pits a one-syllable past stem against a historical present form containing a short vowel that the script does not show. Syntax and meter may both distinguish them.
فرستاده فرمان را برد و پیش از نیمهشب بازگشت.
ferestâde farmân râ bord-o pish az nime-shab bâz-gasht.
The envoy took the decree and returned before midnight. (constructed historical-style; برد is one-syllable past bord in a completed sequence)
شاید که فرستاده این پیام برد و پاسخ بازآورد.
shâyad ke ferestâde in peyâm barad-o pâsokh bâz-âvarad.
Perhaps the envoy will take this message and bring back an answer. (constructed archaic-style; برد is read barad as a licensed prefixless present form)
In the first sentence, برد coordinates with past بازگشت and follows a definite object, strongly favoring bord. In the second, شاید که opens a nonasserted future-oriented domain, and parallel بازآورد supports barad. A modern writer would normally say ببرد after شاید; the prefixless form is historical.
چون شب بود، کاروان کنار چشمه فرود آمد.
chun shab bud, kâravân kenâr-e cheshme forud âmad.
Because it was night, the caravan stopped beside the spring. (constructed historical-style; بود is past bud and sets the temporal background)
اگر چنین بود، داور سخن هر دو سوی بشنود.
agar chonin bovad, dâvar sokhan-e har do suy be-shenavad.
If it be so, let the judge hear both sides. (constructed archaic-style; بود is vocalized bovad, a present/nonpast form)
The two بود spellings are identical, but past narrative آمد supports bud in the third example; a live condition and dependent بشنود support bovad in the fourth. A modern search index that lemmatizes every بود as past tense will corrupt historical analysis.
Auxiliary versus lexical readings
Vocalization may be stable while syntactic status remains ambiguous. آمد can mean lexical “came,” but Early New Persian also used آمدن after a participle as a passive auxiliary. بود can be a lexical/copular past or form the past perfect after a participle. شد can mean “became/happened” or build a passive.
قاصد خسته آمد و نامه را بر میز نهاد.
qâsed khaste âmad-o nâme râ bar miz nehâd.
The messenger arrived tired and put the letter on the table. (constructed historical-style; آمد is a lexical motion verb)
فرمان در همان روز نوشته آمد و به دیوان سپرده شد.
farmân dar hamân ruz neveshte âmad-o be divân seporde shod.
The decree was written that same day and delivered to the chancery. (constructed Early-New-Persian-style; نوشته آمد is an analytic passive)
پیش از رسیدن پیک، دبیر فرمان را نوشته بود.
pish az residan-e peyk, dabir farmân râ neveshte bud.
Before the courier arrived, the secretary had written the decree. (past perfect; بود is auxiliary to an active anterior event)
The noun phrase and argument structure are decisive. قاصد ... آمد has a moving animate subject; فرمان نوشته آمد has a patient plus participle. In دبیر فرمان را نوشته بود, explicit agent دبیر and object فرمان را support active past perfect rather than “the decree was written.”
Meter is evidence, not a master key
In quantitative verse, bud occupies one heavy syllable, while the conventional literary reading bovad contributes two syllables. Likewise bord and barad scan differently. A secure meter can eliminate one candidate—but only if the line itself, its transmitted wording, and the metrical analysis are secure.
وزن مصراع با خوانش یکهجایی برد یک هجا کم دارد، اما با خوانش دوهجایی برد کامل میشود.
vazn-e mesrâ' bâ khân-esh-e yek-hejâyi bord yek hejâ kam dârad, ammâ bâ khân-esh-e do-hejâyi barad kâmel mi-shavad.
The meter is one syllable short with the one-syllable reading bord, but becomes complete with the two-syllable reading barad. (constructed metrical diagnosis)
Meter cannot rescue a syntactically impossible reading, nor can an editor alter consonants silently to repair a favorite scansion. First test morphology and clause structure; then use meter as an independent constraint. See Poetic Meter and Pronunciation.
Compare witnesses before committing
One manuscript may preserve an ambiguous form while another supplies a clarifying prefix, auxiliary, or parallel verb. The later witness is evidence for reception and may preserve the better reading; it is not automatically more original.
نسخهی الف «اگر چنین بود» دارد، نسخهی ب «اگر چنین باشد» و نسخهی ج «اگر چنین بود» را با خوانش دوهجایی ثبت کرده است.
noskhe-ye alef «agar chonin bud» dârad, noskhe-ye be «agar chonin bâshad»-o noskhe-ye jim «agar chonin bovad» râ bâ khân-esh-e do-hejâyi sabt karde ast.
Witness A has اگر چنین بود, witness B اگر چنین باشد, and witness C records اگر چنین بود with the two-syllable reading bovad. (hypothetical apparatus; the witnesses are constructed)
Witness B supports a nonpast conditional meaning, and C explicitly records a bovad reading. Yet an editor must still ask whether B and C independently preserve old evidence or share a modernization. Date, genealogy, scribal habits, and the surrounding passage matter.
A responsible decision record
A defensible note states: the transmitted form; candidate segmentations and readings; syntactic evidence; meter or rhyme; witness support; adopted reading; and residual uncertainty. “Obviously” is not an argument.
مصحح خوانش دوهجایی برد را برگزید، زیرا فعل پس از شاید آمده، با بازآورد موازی است و وزن نیز دو هجا میخواهد؛ بااینحال، خوانش یکهجایی برد در حاشیه ثبت شد.
mosahheh khân-esh-e do-hejâyi barad râ bar-gozid, zirâ fe'l pas az shâyad âmade, bâ bâz-âvarad movâzi ast-o vazn niz do hejâ mi-khâhad; bâ-in-hâl, khân-esh-e yek-hejâyi bord dar hâshiye sabt shod.
The editor adopted the two-syllable reading barad because the verb follows شاید, is parallel with بازآورد, and the meter requires two syllables; nevertheless, the one-syllable bord was recorded in the apparatus. (model editorial rationale for a constructed case)
This is calibrated certainty. A reading edition may print or voice barad; a critical apparatus preserves bord as a live rejected candidate. Audio should follow the adopted reading, while metadata or commentary keeps the decision inspectable.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating modern frequency as proof
❌ چون بود در فارسی امروز فعل گذشته است، در همهی متون کهن هم باید آن را بیتردید گذشته خواند.
Incorrect — historical بود can also represent bovad; syntax, meter, and witnesses must decide.
✅ در شرط زندهی این حکایت، خوانش دوهجایی بود با فعل پس از آن سازگارتر است.
dar shart-e zende-ye in hekâyat, khân-esh-e do-hejâyi bovad bâ fe'l-e pas az ân sâzgâr-tar ast.
In this tale's open condition, the two-syllable bovad fits the following verb better.
2. Calling every participle plus آمد lexical motion
❌ نوشته آمد یعنی نوشتهای از راه رسید.
Incorrect in the intended historical passive frame — آمد can function as an auxiliary after a participle.
✅ در این سند، نوشته آمد را «نوشته شد» ترجمه میکنیم.
dar in sanad, neveshte âmad râ «neveshte shod» tarjome mi-konim.
In this document, we translate نوشته آمد as ‘was written.’
3. Letting meter override the manuscript
❌ برای کاملشدن وزن میتوانیم هر حرفی به فعل بیفزاییم.
Incorrect — meter can select among textually and morphologically possible readings, not license undocumented consonants.
✅ نخست صورت نسخه را ثبت میکنیم، سپس خوانشهای سازگار با وزن را میسنجیم.
nokhost surat-e noskhe râ sabt mi-konim, sepas khân-esh-hâ-ye sâzgâr bâ vazn râ mi-sanjim.
First we record the manuscript form; then we evaluate readings compatible with the meter.
4. Hiding uncertainty in the audio layer
❌ یک خوانش را ضبط میکنیم و وجود خوانش رقیب را ذکر نمیکنیم.
Incorrect editorial method — audio commits to one reading but must not erase a serious alternative.
✅ صدا خوانش برگزیده را اجرا میکند و یادداشت دلیل انتخاب و صورت رقیب را ثبت میکند.
sedâ khân-esh-e bar-gozide râ ejrâ mi-konad-o yâd-dâsht dalil-e entekhâb-o surat-e raqib râ sabt mi-konad.
The audio realizes the adopted reading, while the note records the reason for the choice and the competing form.
Key Takeaways
- Unpointed letters are evidence; vocalization, segmentation, punctuation, and modernization are editorial analyses.
- بود and برد can conceal historically distinct past and present readings.
- Argument structure distinguishes lexical verbs from auxiliaries in participial perfect and passive constructions.
- Meter is an independent constraint, not authority to alter the transmitted consonants.
- Compare witnesses and publish the rationale; responsible certainty includes recording serious rejected readings.
