Persian forms many lexical nouns by combining two nouns or a noun with a verbal stem: راهآهن “railway,” آبمیوه “fruit juice,” کارخانه “factory,” برنامهنویس “programmer,” and فیلمساز “filmmaker.” A compound behaves as one vocabulary item even when its spelling shows a ZWNJ or full boundary. Its meaning, stress, and plural placement cannot be predicted by simply reading the parts as an ordinary ezâfe phrase.
English also has compounds such as railway and software developer, but English strongly favors first-member stress and writes compounds solid, hyphenated, or spaced unpredictably. Persian has its own lexical spelling conventions and often places the element that determines the broad semantic class at the end.
Compound versus ezâfe phrase
An ezâfe phrase is built in syntax: its first noun is the head, and the following noun identifies a possessor or type. در کارخانه means “the factory door”; در is the head, and spoken ezâfe links it to کارخانه even though the short vowel is normally unwritten. A tight lexical compound has no productive ezâfe between its internal members: راهآهن is pronounced râh-âhan, not râh-e âhan. The Ezâfe chain page covers the phrasal alternative in detail.
| Structure | Example | Internal relation | Head behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| free ezâfe phrase | در کارخانه | door associated with the factory; pronounced dar-e kârkhâne | first noun در is clearly the head |
| noun–noun lexical compound | راهآهن | historically/compositionally “iron road,” lexical meaning “railway” | whole compound names a transport system |
| solid noun–noun formation | کارخانه | historically “work-house,” lexical meaning “factory” | final element once supplied a place class; modern meaning is lexicalized |
| noun + present stem | فیلمساز | film is the thing made; ساز comes from ساختن | final stem supplies the maker relation |
Noun–noun compounds and head direction
In many transparent compounds, the final member supplies a broad class and the first narrows it. Historically, کتابخانه is a type of خانه-formation and نمکدان a type of دان container. But frequent compounds can become semantically opaque: a modern کارخانه is an industrial factory, not any “house of work,” and دستمال can mean a handkerchief or cloth without requiring a hand-related use.
راهآهن این منطقه پس از سیل دوباره باز شده است.
râh-âhan-e in mantaqe pas az seyl do-bâre bâz shode ast.
This region’s railway has reopened after the flood. (formal-neutral; lexical noun–noun compound)
برای مهمانها آبمیوه و چای آماده کردهایم.
barâ-ye mehmân-hâ âb-mive va chây âmâde karde-im.
We have prepared fruit juice and tea for the guests. (neutral conversation; lexical compound)
این کارخانه تجهیزات پزشکی تولید میکند.
in kârkhâne tajhizât-e pezeshki towled mi-konad.
This factory manufactures medical equipment. (formal-neutral; solid lexicalized formation)
مادربزرگم کمی گلاب به شربت اضافه کرد.
mâdarbozorg-am kami golâb be sharbat ezâfe kard.
My grandmother added a little rosewater to the drink. (neutral narrative; solid compound with a conventional meaning)
Head direction is therefore a diagnostic, not an infallible translation formula. Some compounds are exocentric: the whole word names something that is not literally a subtype of either modern independent noun. Lexicalization can preserve old material while shifting the category and meaning of the whole.
Noun plus verbal stem
Persian productively combines a noun with a present stem such as ساز from ساختن, نویس from نوشتن, فروش from فروختن, or جو from جستن/جُستن in inherited formations. The noun typically corresponds to an argument or domain of the verbal idea.
| Compound | Internal relation | Whole-word meaning |
|---|---|---|
| فیلمساز | makes films | filmmaker |
| برنامهنویس | writes programs | programmer |
| کتابفروش | sells books | bookseller |
| دانشجو | seeks knowledge, historically | student |
یک برنامهنویس تازه به گروه فنی ما پیوسته است.
yek barnâme-nevis-e tâze be goruh-e fanni-ye mâ peyvaste ast.
A new programmer has joined our technical team. (neutral workplace register; noun plus present stem)
آن فیلمساز جوان نخستین اثرش را در شیراز ساخته است.
ân film-sâz-e javân nokhostin asar-ash râ dar Shirâz sâkhte ast.
That young filmmaker made her first work in Shiraz. (formal-neutral; ساز supplies the maker relation)
The internal noun is not a free direct object in the sentence. In با فیلمساز صحبت کردم, the whole فیلمساز is the complement of با; speakers do not parse فیلم as the clause’s object of a hidden verb. This is word formation, not a finite light-verb construction.
Productivity is real but restricted by lexical competition. A transparent new occupational term may be understood, especially in technical writing, yet Persian may already have a conventional word with a different stem or suffix. Verify a coinage before using it in a job title.
Stress helps, but does not determine spelling
Many lexical compounds form one accentual unit, with the strongest lexical stress near the end: râh-âHAN, film-SÂZ, barnâme-neVIS. An ezâfe phrase distributes prominence across a larger phrase and overtly pronounces the linker. Still, stress alone cannot tell you whether editors write a solid word, a ZWNJ, or a space.
Established spellings fall into several groups:
- solid: کارخانه، دستمال، گلاب، دانشجو;
- ZWNJ: راهآهن، آبمیوه، فیلمساز، برنامهنویس;
- multiword lexical expressions with full spacing or ezâfe, whose boundaries remain syntactic.
These are dictionary facts guided by readability and lexical history. Do not replace a ZWNJ with a visible hyphen in Persian script; the hyphen in romanization only makes the components readable for learners.
در آهنی کارخانه زنگ زده، اما راهآهن هنوز فعال است.
dar-e âhani-ye kârkhâne zang zade, ammâ râh-âhan hanuz fa'âl ast.
The factory’s iron door is rusty, but the railway is still operating. (neutral standard; ezâfe phrase در آهنی versus compound راهآهن)
The sequence در آهنی contains spoken ezâfe and means “iron door”; راهآهن contains no internal ezâfe and names a railway. The surface nouns راه and آهن do not authorize learners to insert the linker.
Semantic opacity is normal
Compounds range from transparent کتابفروش to opaque or specialized words. دستمال is not restricted to wiping hands. آبمیوه conventionally means juice, while a freely composed phrase آبِ میوه could be interpreted literally as liquid/water from a fruit in a special context. دانشجو is synchronically the ordinary word “student,” not a poetic description that speakers recalculate every time.
Plural marking goes at the outer edge
Once the compound is built, plural morphology attaches to the whole word: کارخانهها، راهآهنها، فیلمسازها، برنامهنویسان. A plural inside the compound would change or destroy the lexical structure. Human nouns may take ـان in formal-neutral prose; everyday usage also permits ـها.
چند برنامهنویس و فیلمساز در این نشست شرکت کردند.
chand barnâme-nevis va film-sâz dar in neshast sherkat kardand.
Several programmers and filmmakers took part in this session. (formal-neutral; bare nouns after چند)
راهآهنهای محلی به سرمایهگذاری بیشتری نیاز دارند.
râh-âhan-hâ-ye mahalli be sarmâye-gozâri-ye bishtari niyâz dârand.
Local railway systems need more investment. (formal; plural suffix follows the whole compound)
A short exchange
— این آبمیوه را از کجا خریدی؟ — از فروشگاهی روبهروی راهآهن؛ صاحبش همکلاسی قدیمی من است.
— in âb-mive râ az kojâ kharidi? — az forushgâhi ru-be-ru-ye râh-âhan; sâheb-ash hamkelâsi-ye qadimi-ye man ast.
— Where did you buy this fruit juice? — From a shop opposite the railway station; its owner is an old classmate of mine. (neutral conversation; several lexical formations)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting ezâfe inside a lexical compound
❌ راه آهن شهر امروز بسته است.
Incorrect for ‘the city railway’ — lexical راهآهن has no internal ezâfe or full space.
✅ بخشی از راهآهن شهر امروز بسته است.
bakhshi az râh-âhan-e shahr emruz baste ast.
Part of the city railway is closed today.
2. Removing ezâfe from a free noun phrase
❌ درکارخانه فلزی است.
Incorrect for ‘the factory door is metal’ — در and کارخانه form an ezâfe phrase, not a solid compound.
✅ در اصلی کارخانه فلزی است.
dar-e asli-ye kârkhâne felezzi ast.
The factory’s main door is metal.
3. Putting plural morphology inside the compound
❌ فیلمهاسازهای جوان جایزه گرفتند.
Incorrect — فیلم is internal to فیلمساز; pluralize the completed person noun.
✅ دو فیلمساز جوان جایزهی اصلی را گرفتند.
do film-sâz-e javân jâyeze-ye asli râ gereftand.
Two young filmmakers won the main prize.
4. Translating every compound literally
⚠️ کارخانه یعنی هر خانهای که کسی در آن کار میکند.
kârkhâne ya'ni har khâne-i ke kasi dar ân kâr mi-konad.
The sentence is grammatical, but the definition is false: کارخانه is the lexical word ‘factory,’ not any home where someone works.
✅ این ساختمان قبلا خانه بود و حالا به کارخانه تبدیل شده است.
in sâkhtemân qablan khâne bud va hâlâ be kârkhâne tabdil shode ast.
This building used to be a house and has now been converted into a factory.
Key Takeaways
- Tight lexical compounds lack the internal ezâfe of ordinary noun phrases.
- The final element often supplies a semantic class or verbal relation, but lexicalized and exocentric compounds resist a simple universal head rule.
- Noun + present-stem compounds encode an internal argument relation: فیلمساز، برنامهنویس، کتابفروش.
- Learn solid, ZWNJ, and spaced spellings lexically; pronunciation does not fully predict typography.
- Plural marking attaches outside the completed compound: راهآهنها، فیلمسازها، برنامهنویسان.
