Place and Container Suffixes گاه، خانه، دان، زار

Persian builds many place and container nouns by adding گاه، خانه، دان، or زار to a base: آزمایشگاه “laboratory,” کتابخانه “library,” نمکدان “saltshaker,” and نیزار “reed bed.” These endings help learners recognize an unfamiliar word, but they are not freely interchangeable. Each selects a semantic family, and many common formations are lexicalized words whose exact meaning and spelling must be learned.

English often uses a separate noun—station, house, holder, field—or a borrowed word such as laboratory. Persian packages the relation inside one lexical item. Stress normally falls toward the end of the completed word, and plural marking attaches to the whole formation.

The four semantic families

ـخانهbuilding, room, or establishment associated with the baseکتابخانه، داروخانه، چاپخانه، قهوه‌خانهproductive in limited conventional domains

ـزارarea where the base occurs abundantlyگلزار، نیزار، لاله‌زار، کشتزارproductive in geographic, ecological, and literary naming
💡
Use the suffix to predict a broad semantic class, not a full dictionary definition. کتابخانه is a library, not any “house with books”; دانشگاه is a university, not any place where knowledge exists.

گاه: a place for an activity or function

گاه commonly follows a noun or verbal base and names an institutional or functional location. In آزمایشگاه, experiments characterize the place; in فرودگاه, landing identifies its function; in نمایشگاه, exhibiting does. New official and technical terms can still use this pattern, so گاه is the most clearly productive member of this set.

دانشگاه برای رشته‌ی پرستاری یک آزمایشگاه تازه ساخته است.

dâneshgâh barâ-ye reshte-ye parastâri yek âzmâyeshgâh-e tâze sâkhte ast.

The university has built a new laboratory for the nursing program. (formal-neutral; two lexicalized گاه formations)

پرواز تبریز از خروجی هفت فرودگاه انجام می‌شود.

parvâz-e Tabriz az khoruji-ye haft forudgâh anjâm mi-shavad.

The Tabriz flight departs from gate seven at the airport. (neutral announcement context)

آخر هفته در نمایشگاه صنایع دستی غرفه داریم.

âkhar-e hafte dar namâyeshgâh-e sanâye'-e dasti ghorfe dârim.

We have a booth at the handicrafts exhibition this weekend. (neutral conversation; نمایشگاه names both venue and event by lexical convention)

The ending can also form time words, as in شامگاه “evening,” but that is a separate inherited use. A learner should not assume that every ـگاه word names a building. جایگاه can mean a place, position, rank, or designated stand depending on context.

خانه: an establishment, not necessarily a home

Independent خانه means “house/home.” As the final member of a lexical formation, it names a venue associated with the first element. داروخانه is a pharmacy and چاپخانه a printing house; neither has to resemble a private home. کتابخانه can refer to a library room, institution, or organized book collection.

نسخه‌ی خطی را فقط در کتابخانه‌ی مرکزی می‌توان دید.

noskhe-ye khatti râ faqat dar ketâbkhâne-ye markazi mi-tavân did.

The manuscript can be viewed only in the central library. (formal-neutral; institutional meaning)

این چاپخانه سفارش‌های کوچک را هم قبول می‌کند.

in châpkhâne sefâresh-hâ-ye kuchak râ ham qabul mi-konad.

This printing house also accepts small orders. (neutral standard)

Many established formations are solid: کتابخانه، داروخانه، چاپخانه. A ZWNJ appears in forms such as قهوه‌خانه, where it preserves a readable boundary after final ه. This is a lexical spelling distinction, not a rule that learners can derive from meaning alone.

دان: a holder or receptacle

Container ـدان identifies something intended to hold the base: نمکدان holds salt, قلمدان pens, and زباله‌دان rubbish. The relationship can shift through lexicalization: گلدان is normally a flowerpot or vase, not simply any container currently holding a flower.

نمکدان کنار اجاق است، نه روی میز غذاخوری.

namakdân kenâr-e ojâq ast, na ru-ye miz-e ghazâkhori.

The saltshaker is beside the stove, not on the dining table. (neutral conversation)

لطفا پوست میوه را در زباله‌دان آشپزخانه بریز.

lotfan pust-e mive râ dar zobâle-dân-e âshpazkhâne be-riz.

Please put the fruit peel in the kitchen bin. (neutral familiar instruction)

Another element pronounced دان occurs in learned person nouns connected with knowing, as in زبان‌دان “one knowledgeable in languages.” That is not the container relation. Meaning, base type, and lexical history separate the two; mechanical segmentation by sound is not enough.

💡
For ـدان, ask “Does the whole word conventionally hold the first noun?” If not, you may be dealing with a different lexical element or an unanalyzable word.

زار: an area characterized by abundance

ـزار forms nouns for stretches of land where something grows, occurs, or dominates: نیزار is a reed bed, گلزار a flower garden or flower-filled area, and کشتزار cultivated land. It is common in place names and landscape description and has a noticeable literary life, but it also appears in ordinary geographic and environmental prose.

مسیر پیاده‌روی از کنار نیزار می‌گذرد.

masir-e piyâde-ravi az kenâr-e neyzâr mi-gozarad.

The walking path passes beside the reed bed. (neutral descriptive prose)

در فروردین این دشت به لاله‌زاری سرخ تبدیل می‌شود.

dar Farvardin in dasht be lâle-zâri-ye sorkh tabdil mi-shavad.

In Farvardin, this plain turns into a red field of tulips. (neutral descriptive prose)

The suffix implies characteristic concentration, not merely the presence of one item. One flower beside a road does not make a گلزار. New formations are possible in literary or environmental naming, but a coined word can sound poetic or terminological rather than everyday.

Spelling and stress belong to the whole word

Core established forms are written solid: دانشگاه، کتابخانه، نمکدان، گلزار. Some transparent boundaries require a ZWNJ: قهوه‌خانه، زباله‌دان، لاله‌زار. Full spacing—دانش گاه—incorrectly presents the ending as an independent word. Because accepted spellings reflect both general orthographic principles and lexical convention, consult a current dictionary for a rare coinage instead of inserting or deleting ZWNJ by visual preference. The broader Word Division in Compounds and Derivatives page explains why semantic unity does not always produce one visually solid string.

The completed formation normally has its main lexical stress toward the final element: dâneshGÂH, ketâbKHÂNE, namakDÂN. Inflection comes after the whole word: دانشگاه‌ها، کتابخانه‌ها، نمکدان‌ها، گلزارها. The plural does not attach to the base inside the derivative.

کتابخانه‌ها و پژوهشگاه‌های شهر امروز تعطیل‌اند.

ketâbkhâne-hâ va pazhuheshgâh-hâ-ye shahr emruz ta'til-and.

The city’s libraries and research institutes are closed today. (formal-neutral; plural outside each completed formation)

A short exchange

— نزدیک خوابگاه سطل زباله هست؟ — بله، یک زباله‌دان بزرگ کنار گلخانه گذاشته‌اند.

— nazdik-e khâbgâh satl-e zobâle hast? — bale, yek zobâle-dân-e bozorg kenâr-e golkhâne gozâshte-and.

— Is there a rubbish bin near the dormitory? — Yes, they have put a large bin beside the greenhouse. (neutral conversation; گاه، دان, and خانه formations)

Common Mistakes

1. Writing a lexical suffix as a separate word

❌ فردا در نمایش گاه کتاب کار می‌کنم.

Incorrect spelling — نمایشگاه is one lexical word.

✅ فردا در نمایشگاه کتاب دانشگاه کار می‌کنم.

fardâ dar namâyeshgâh-e ketâb-e dâneshgâh kâr mi-konam.

Tomorrow I am working at the university book fair.

2. Pluralizing the base inside the formation

❌ کتاب‌هاخانه‌ی محله باز است.

Incorrect — plural marking cannot split the lexical formation کتابخانه.

✅ کتابخانه‌های محله تا عصر باز هستند.

ketâbkhâne-hâ-ye mahalle tâ asr bâz hastand.

The neighborhood libraries are open until the evening.

3. Treating every possible combination as an established word

⚠️ کفشدان را باز کن و کفش‌ها را داخلش بگذار.

kafshdân râ bâz kon va kafsh-hâ râ dâkhel-ash be-gozâr.

Attested, especially for a shoe receptacle or rack, but not the neutral everyday term for a household shoe cabinet in every context.

✅ جاکفشی را باز کن و کفش‌ها را داخلش بگذار.

jâ-kafshi râ bâz kon va kafsh-hâ râ dâkhel-ash be-gozâr.

Open the shoe cabinet and put the shoes inside it.

4. Reading container دان as “expert”

⚠️ نمکدان یعنی کسی که درباره‌ی نمک دانش دارد.

namakdân ya'ni kasi ke darbâre-ye namak dânesh dârad.

The sentence is grammatical, but its morphological analysis is false: in نمکدان, ـدان names a container, not a knowledgeable person.

✅ نمکدان شیشه‌ای را کنار بشقاب‌ها بگذار.

namakdân-e shishe-i râ kenâr-e boshqâb-hâ be-gozâr.

Put the glass saltshaker beside the plates.

Key Takeaways

  • گاه names functional places, خانه conventional establishments, دان containers, and زار areas characterized by abundance.
  • The suffix predicts a semantic family, not the exact lexical meaning.
  • Established formations may be solid or use ZWNJ; learn spellings such as دانشگاه، قهوه‌خانه، زباله‌دان، لاله‌زار.
  • Stress and plural marking apply to the completed word, with ـها at its outer edge.
  • Productivity is graded: گاه remains useful in technical naming, while many دان and خانه words are lexicalized.
