Negative Prefixes بی and نا

Persian بی‌ and نا build negative or privative words, but they do not simply copy English un-, in-, non-, and -less. Productive بی‌ most often combines with a noun and means “without, lacking”: بی‌پول “without money.” نا commonly forms a contrary adjective: ناامن “unsafe,” نادرست “incorrect.” The choice is lexical as well as semantic, so not every base accepts both prefixes.

These are derivational prefixes: they create a word that can occur inside a positive clause. In این مسیر ناامن است, the copula است is positive; the property itself is “unsafe.” This differs structurally from این مسیر امن نیست, where نیست negates the clause. The Negative Copula page treats that clause-level pattern separately.

Privation versus contrary meaning

نا + adjective/adjectival baseproperty or expected statecontrary, deficient, or not meeting the propertyنادرست، ناامن، ناآرام، ناهماهنگ
lexicalized formationhistorical combinationmeaning no longer fully predictableبیکار، بیچاره، ناشناس

بی‌تجربه describes someone lacking experience. نادرست describes something that fails the standard of being correct. The difference is useful but not mechanical: dictionaries, convention, and register decide which combinations are established.

💡
Use a first approximation: بی‌ asks “without what?”, while نا asks “contrary to which expected property?” Then verify the actual word, because lexical convention can override the neat semantic split.

بی‌ builds “without X” words

The base after بی‌ is often a noun. The result is commonly an adjective, but it can function adverbially or become a noun in context. بی‌صدا وارد شد means “entered silently”; آدم بی‌تجربه means “an inexperienced person.” Persian does not add gender agreement, and the derived form remains unchanged beside plural nouns.

این اتاق بی‌پنجره برای کار طولانی مناسب نیست.

in otâq-e bi-panjare barâ-ye kâr-e tulâni monâseb nist.

This windowless room is not suitable for working for long periods. (neutral standard; privation)

او بی‌صدا در را بست تا بچه بیدار نشود.

u bi-sedâ dar râ bast tâ bachche bidâr na-shavad.

She closed the door silently so the child would not wake up. (neutral standard; derived adjective used adverbially)

برای این کار به یک مترجم باتجربه نیاز داریم، نه فردی بی‌تجربه.

barâ-ye in kâr be yek motarjem-e bâ-tajrobe niyâz dârim, na fardi bi-tajrobe.

For this job we need an experienced translator, not an inexperienced person. (formal-neutral; privative contrast)

The productive prefix is normally written with a ZWNJ: بی‌دلیل، بی‌نتیجه، بی‌احترام. Frequent lexicalized words may have established solid spellings, including بیکار “unemployed/idle” and بیچاره “poor, unfortunate.” Do not respell those automatically from the productive rule.

For a freely built syntactic phrase, Persian can use بدون + noun: بدون پول از خانه بیرون رفت “he left home without money.” بی‌پول بود instead predicates a relatively stable “penniless” property. They overlap, but بدون remains a preposition and can take larger noun phrases more freely.

بدون نقشه راه افتادیم و خیلی زود گم شدیم.

bedun-e naqsha râh oftâdim va kheyli zud gom shodim.

We set out without a map and got lost very quickly. (neutral standard; syntactic بدون phrase, not a coined adjective)

نا builds contrary or nonconforming properties

نا commonly attaches directly to a base: نادرست، ناامن، ناآرام، ناشناخته. The result says that an expected property fails, is reversed, or is absent. It is usually adjectival and can appear before or after the copula just like other Persian adjectives.

این جاده بعد از تاریکی ناامن می‌شود.

in jâdde ba'd az târiki nâ-amn mi-shavad.

This road becomes unsafe after dark. (neutral standard; contrary property)

دو جدول با هم ناهماهنگ‌اند و باید دوباره بررسی شوند.

do jadval bâ ham nâhamâhang-and va bâyad do-bâre barrasi shavand.

The two tables are inconsistent with each other and must be checked again. (formal-neutral)

پاسخ او نادرست نبود، اما کامل هم نبود.

pâsokh-e u nâdorost na-bud, ammâ kâmel ham na-bud.

Her answer was not incorrect, but it was not complete either. (neutral standard; derivational and clausal negation together)

The third example demonstrates two layers. نادرست is a derived lexical property; نبود negates the predication “was incorrect.” The result means the answer does not belong to the “incorrect” category, not that نا somehow cancels نـ mechanically.

The prefix is not fully productive. ناخوشایند “unpleasant,” ناممکن “impossible,” and ناخوانا “illegible” are established; an invented نا + any adjective may be understandable but sound bureaucratic, humorous, or simply wrong. English freely creates occasional non-X terms in technical prose; Persian may instead prefer غیرِ X, بدون X, or a negative clause.

💡
When a new نا formation is not established, do not force it. Use ... نیست, غیرِ ..., or بدون ... according to meaning, and check a current dictionary before presenting a coinage as ordinary Persian.

Word-level negation versus clause-level negation

Derived negatives can be attributed, compared, pluralized through their noun, and embedded under a positive verb. Clause negation belongs to the finite verb or copula.

StructurePersianFocus
derived negative adjectiveمسیر ناامن استclassifies the route as unsafe
negative copular clauseمسیر امن نیستdenies that the route is safe
privative adjectiveمن بی‌خبر بودمpresents the subject as uninformed
negative verb phraseمن خبر نداشتمdenies possession of information

من از تغییر ساعت جلسه بی‌خبر بودم.

man az taghyir-e sâ'at-e jalase bi-khabar budam.

I was unaware of the change in the meeting time. (formal-neutral; derived property)

من درباره‌ی تغییر ساعت جلسه خبر نداشتم.

man darbâre-ye taghyir-e sâ'at-e jalase khabar na-dâshtam.

I did not know about the change in the meeting time. (neutral standard; finite verb negation)

The two sentences are close, but the first assigns the subject a state; the second directly denies having the information. Word formation and syntax can therefore package nearly the same situation from different perspectives.

Lexicalization and register

Both prefixes are native and occur across registers. بی‌ is productive in everyday description and in formal abstract terms such as بی‌ثباتی “instability.” نا is common in edited, technical, and evaluative vocabulary. A new نا formation can sound official because institutional prose frequently creates terms such as “noncompliant” or “incompatible,” but productivity is not unlimited.

Some words only look transparently segmentable to a modern learner. بیمار “ill” and ناهار “lunch” must be learned as whole lexical items in present-day Persian; their remaining letters are not productive bases that predict their meanings.

A short exchange

— چرا گزارش را برگرداندند؟ — چون چند بخشش ناهماهنگ و بعضی جدول‌ها بی‌عنوان بود.

— cherâ gozâresh râ bar-gardândand? — chun chand bakhsh-ash nâhamâhang va ba'zi jadval-hâ bi-onvân bud.

— Why did they send the report back? — Because several sections were inconsistent and some tables had no titles. (neutral workplace conversation; contrary نا and privative بی‌)

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting the ZWNJ after productive بی‌

❌ این تصمیم بی دلیل گرفته شد.

Incorrect edited spelling — productive بی‌ forms a single word with a ZWNJ.

✅ این تصمیم مهم بی‌دلیل گرفته نشده است.

in tasmim-e mohemm bi-dalil gerefte na-shode ast.

This important decision was not made without reason.

2. Using derivational نا as verbal negation

❌ من فردا نا می‌آیم.

Incorrect — finite present negation uses نمی‌ on the verb, not derivational نا.

✅ من فردا به دفتر نمی‌آیم.

man fardâ be daftar nemi-âyam.

I am not coming to the office tomorrow.

3. Assuming بی‌ and نا are interchangeable

❌ این کوچه شب‌ها بی‌امن است.

Incorrect lexical choice — the established contrary adjective is ناامن.

✅ این کوچه‌ی کم‌نور شب‌ها ناامن است.

in kuche-ye kam-nur shab-hâ nâ-amn ast.

This dimly lit alley is unsafe at night.

4. Creating a نا word by translating English non- mechanically

❌ این بخش گزارش ناپایانی است.

Unestablished for intended ‘not final’ — English non-/un- does not license any نا coinage.

✅ این بخش گزارش هنوز نهایی نیست.

in bakhsh-e gozâresh hanuz nehâyi nist.

This section of the report is not final yet.

Key Takeaways

  • Productive بی‌ + noun usually means “without or lacking X”; نا + property base usually forms a contrary adjective.
  • Write productive بی‌ with ZWNJ; common lexicalized exceptions such as بیکار have established solid spelling.
  • نا normally attaches directly in words such as نادرست، ناامن، ناهماهنگ.
  • Derived negative words can occur in positive clauses; finite negation still belongs to نـ، نمی‌، نیست.
  • Neither prefix combines freely with every base, so verify unfamiliar formations rather than translating English affixes mechanically.
