Persian often combines a noun, adjective, or other nonverbal element with a participial form to make one descriptive unit. Everyday یخزده “frozen,” formal-neutral شناختهشده “well-known,” and emotionally vivid دلشکسته “heartbroken” all belong here. Their final element resembles a past participle, but the compound as a whole functions like an adjective: it can follow a noun through ezâfe, serve as a predicate, and remain unchanged when the noun is plural.
The form is easy to recognize; the meaning is less mechanical. Sometimes the first element is the cause of the result, sometimes an object understood with the verbal idea, and sometimes a body part whose condition characterizes a person. Learners therefore need both a productive pattern and a small lexical inventory.
The Basic Shape
The common pattern is nonverbal element + participial element. Many second elements are ordinary past participles in ـه, while transparent passive-result adjectives frequently end in شده “become, been made.”
| Type | Example | Internal relation | Usual register |
|---|---|---|---|
| cause + result | آفتابسوخته “sunburned” | burned by the sun | neutral |
| affected thing + result | دلشکسته “heartbroken” | having a broken heart | neutral; frequent in literary language |
| object + experience | جهاندیده “worldly, experienced” | having seen the world | formal or literary |
| change + resulting state | رنگپریده “pale” | whose color has faded | neutral |
| passive/result | شناختهشده “recognized, well-known” | having become known | neutral to formal |
| transparent result | یخزده “frozen” | having frozen | neutral and informal |

سبزیهای یخزده را مستقیم داخل قابلمه بریز.
sabzi-hâ-ye yakh-zade râ mostaghim dâkhel-e ghâblame beriz.
Put the frozen vegetables straight into the pot.
In English, “frozen” or “recognized” comes before the noun. Persian follows its ordinary adjective pattern: noun first, then ezâfe, then the compound adjective. Review the placement rule on Adjectives after Nouns with Ezâfe.
One Form, Several Argument Relations
The first member does not have one fixed grammatical role. In آفتابسوخته, the sun is understood as the cause. In جهاندیده, the world is what an experienced person has seen; the whole adjective describes the active experiencer, not “a world that was seen.” In دلشکسته, the person is characterized through an affected body part. These relations are conventional but not random: speakers choose the interpretation that produces a plausible enduring property.

ba'd az ân jodâyi, moddati del-shekaste va gushe-gir bud.
After that breakup, he was heartbroken and withdrawn for a while.
مادربزرگم زنی جهاندیده بود و زود قضاوت نمیکرد.
mâdarbozorgam zani jahân-dide bud va zud ghazâvat nemi-kard.

از چهرهی رنگپریدهاش فهمیدم که حالش خوب نیست.
az chehre-ye rang-paride-ash fahmidam ke hâlash khub nist.
I could tell from her pale face that she was not well.
This is a genuine vocabulary challenge. A newly coined compound is understandable only when its intended relation is recoverable from context and established patterns. English speakers may be tempted to translate any “noun + -ed” phrase literally, but Persian does not freely accept every imaginable pairing. Use attested compounds productively; learn less transparent items such as جهاندیده as wholes.
Transparent Results and Lexicalized Properties
Compound participial adjectives lie on a continuum. At the transparent end, اصلاحشده means “revised” and can refer to almost anything that can be revised. At the lexicalized end, دلشکسته names a conventional emotional property, and جهاندیده has developed the broader sense “experienced.” شناختهشده can be compositional “recognized” or lexical “well-known,” depending on context.

The revised version will be posted on the website tomorrow.
این روش در چند کشور شناختهشده است، اما هنوز رایج نیست.
in ravesh dar chand keshvar shenâkhte-shode ast, ammâ hanuz râyej nist.
This method is recognized in several countries, but it is not yet common.
Lexicalization can also affect spelling. Highly established words sometimes have a conventional solid spelling, as in کارکشته “seasoned, highly experienced.” Do not “correct” such dictionary forms by inserting a half-space mechanically. Productive and transparent sequences, however, normally make the internal boundary visible with a zero-width non-joiner: ثبتشده، اصلاحشده، شناختهشده.
Attributive Adjective or Verbal Predicate?
In careful edited spelling, spacing can help signal a structural difference. Inside a noun phrase, the compound adjective is written as one orthographic unit with a ZWNJ: نسخهی اصلاحشده “the revised version.” In a verbal passive or result-perfect predicate, the lexical participle and شده است remain separate: گزارش اصلاح شده است “the report has been revised.” The second sentence makes an assertion about an event or resulting state; the first packages the result as a property of a noun. Syntax remains decisive, however, and informal digital writing often fails to preserve the ZWNJ consistently.
نسخهی اصلاحشده آماده است.
noskhe-ye eslâh-shode âmâde ast.
The revised version is ready.
گزارش دیروز اصلاح شده است.
gozâresh diruz eslâh shode ast.
The report has been revised; the revision took place yesterday.
The time adverb دیروز favors an event reading in the second example. By contrast, an attributive form simply helps identify which version is meant. The Past Participle in ه and Passive in Present and Past pages explain the verbal structures in full.
Ezâfe, Predication, and Plural Invariance
Like other Persian adjectives, these compounds follow the noun. Ezâfe links them attributively: نویسندهی شناختهشده. As predicates, they combine with the copula: نویسنده شناختهشده است. The adjective does not agree in number or gender. Only the noun receives ordinary plural marking: نویسندگان شناختهشده and سبزیهای یخزده.
هر دو مقالهی ترجمهشده را برایم بفرست.
har do maghâle-ye tarjome-shode râ barâyam beferest.
Send me both translated articles.
این دو محله برای گردشگران کمتر شناختهشدهاند.
in do mahalle barâ-ye gardeshgarân kamtar shenâkhte-shode-and.
These two neighborhoods are less well-known to tourists.
The comparative marker کمتر modifies the whole adjectival property; it does not enter the internal compound. This is another sign that speakers treat شناختهشده as a single adjective in this use.
Register in Real Interaction
Transparent result adjectives are common across registers. Formal reports especially favor forms such as ثبتشده، منتشرشده، تأییدشده because they identify documents by institutional status. Everyday conversation freely uses یخزده and دلشکسته. جهاندیده sounds more elevated and is common in biographical or literary description.
این همان درخواست ثبتشده در سامانه است؟

Is this the same request that was registered in the system?
ـ غذای تازه نداریم؟ ـ نه، فقط چند بستهی یخزده مانده.
— ghazâ-ye tâze nadârim? — na, faghat chand baste-ye yakh-zade mânde.
— Don't we have any fresh food? — No, only a few frozen packages are left.
The final مانده in the dialogue is a verbal result form, not part of the preceding compound. Context, syntax, and spacing work together: یخزده modifies بسته, while مانده predicates what remains.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English adjective-before-noun order
❌ شناختهشده نویسنده امشب سخنرانی میکند.
Incorrect — Persian normally places this adjective after the noun and connects it with ezâfe.
✅ نویسندهی شناختهشده امشب سخنرانی میکند.
nevisande-ye shenâkhte-shode emshab sokhanrâni mi-konad.
The well-known writer is giving a talk tonight.
2. Losing the internal half-space
⚠️ نسخهی اصلاح شده را فرستادم.
noskhe-ye eslâh shode râ ferestâdam.
Understandable and common in casual typing, but nonstandard in careful edited spelling for the intended compound adjective; use a ZWNJ in اصلاحشده.
✅ نسخهی اصلاحشده را صبح فرستادم.
noskhe-ye eslâh-shode râ sobh ferestâdam.
I sent the revised version this morning.
3. Adding a plural ending to the adjective
❌ کتابهای ترجمهشدهها روی میز هستند.
Incorrect — the head noun already carries plural marking; the adjective is invariant.
✅ کتابهای ترجمهشده روی قفسهی پایین هستند.
ketâb-hâ-ye tarjome-shode ru-ye ghafase-ye pâ'in hastand.
The translated books are on the bottom shelf.
4. Reading every compound as a passive
⚠️ جهاندیده یعنی جهانی که کسی آن را دیده است.
jahân-dide ya'ni jahâni ke kasi ân râ dide ast.
The sentence is grammatical, but the definition is false: as a compound adjective, جهاندیده normally describes an experienced person.
✅ راهنمای ما آدمی جهاندیده و واقعبین بود.
râhnomâ-ye mâ âdami jahân-dide va vâghe'-bin bud.
Our guide was an experienced and realistic person.
5. Writing an eventive passive as one adjective
❌ گزارش دیروز اصلاحشده.
Incorrect for an asserted past event — this supplies neither the separate passive auxiliary nor a finite copula.
✅ گزارش نهایی دیروز اصلاح شده است.
gozâresh-e nehâyi diruz eslâh shode ast.
The final report was revised yesterday.
Key Takeaways
- A participial compound behaves as one adjective even when its internal meaning comes from an event.
- The first member can express a cause, object, affected part, or other relation; the interpretation is lexical, not a single passive formula.
- Productive result adjectives commonly use a ZWNJ, as in اصلاحشده; a verbal passive keeps شده است separate.
- The adjective follows attributive ezâfe, takes the copula predicatively, and never agrees with the noun in gender or number.
- Transparent formations are productive, but figurative items such as دلشکسته and جهاندیده must be learned as established words.
