Older Persian expresses wishes, commands, prohibitions, possibilities, and nonasserted events through several partly overlapping forms: بـ before a present or past stem, prohibitive مـ, inherited wish forms in ـاد, and particles or clause types that license a prefixless verb. Modern labels such as subjunctive, optative, precative, and injunctive are useful only when their morphology and scope are defined.
The historical facts here follow the Early New Persian morphology survey, which records the inherited third-singular ـاد wish form, early مـ prohibitives, and the gradual grammaticalization of بـ. All historical-style examples below are constructed unless identified as a current formula. Their vocalization is a modern Iranian literary reading, not a reconstruction of medieval speech.
A functional map, not one paradigm
| Form | Typical function | Status in modern Iranian Persian |
|---|---|---|
| بگوید / بگفت | historically variable autonomy, modality, or boundedness | بگوید is current subjunctive; بگفت is archaic |
| مگو / مکن | negative command or prohibition | literary, proverbial, or versified |
| کناد / مکناد | third-singular wish or imprecation | archaic |
| باد / مباد | “may it be / may it not be” | formulaic, literary, and partly productive |
| بادا / مبادا | reinforced wish or warning | مبادا remains recognizable and current in warnings |
The inherited ـاد form is principally third-person singular in Early New Persian. Rare analogical extensions do not justify teaching a regular six-person “optative tense.” In modern usage, باد behaves mostly as an invariant formula after a wished-for predicate: پاینده باد.
نام دوست در دفتر نیکان پاینده باد.
nâm-e dust dar daftar-e nikân pâyande bâd.
May the friend's name endure in the book of the righteous. (constructed literary-style blessing; formulaic باد)
هرچه بادا باد؛ من حقیقت را خواهم گفت.
har-che bâdâ bâd; man khâham goft.
Come what may, I will tell the truth. (current elevated formula; بادا reinforces the optative)
Historical بـ is broader than the modern subjunctive
In modern standard Persian, بـ + present stem + ending is the productive subjunctive and imperative pattern: بگوید، بگو. In earlier Persian, بـ could also foreground a past event, reinforce direction with motion verbs, or mark an autonomous event. Its presence does not by itself prove nonfactual mood.
امید است قاصد پیش از شب بازگردد.
omid ast qâsed pish az shab bâz-gardad.
It is hoped that the messenger will return before nightfall. (formal modern or historical-style; a licenser establishes subjunctive force)
قاصد نامه بگرفت و سوی شهر برفت.
qâsed nâme be-gereft-o su-ye shahr be-raft.
The messenger took the letter and departed toward the city. (constructed historical-style; بـ occurs on past stems and advances the narrative)
The second sentence is not “may take” plus “may go.” گرفت and رفت are past stems, while بازگردد in the first sentence contains a present stem and appears under امید است. Stem identification precedes mood identification.
مـ: classical prohibition and negative wish
Classical Persian commonly uses مـ for a negative command: مگو، مکن، منشین، مرو. Modern neutral Persian normally has نگو، نکن، ننشین، نرو. The older prefix survives in poetry, proverbs, deliberately elevated prose, and fixed expressions.
راز یار مگو و حرمت دوستی مشکن.
râz-e yâr ma-gu-o hormat-e dusti ma-shekan.
Do not tell the beloved's secret, and do not violate the sanctity of friendship. (constructed literary-style; two مـ prohibitives)
در گفتوگوی امروز میگوییم: «این راز را به کسی نگو.»
dar goft-o-gu-ye emruz mi-guyim: «in râz râ be kasi na-gu.»
In present-day conversation we say: ‘Don't tell this secret to anyone.’ (neutral modern negative imperative)
مباد که سخن نسنجیده میان دو دوست جدایی افکند.
ma-bâd ke sokhan-e na-sanjide miyân-e do dust jodâyi afkanad.
May an ill-considered word never separate two friends. (literary/archaic negative wish; مباد, not an ordinary command to an addressee)
In مباد, prohibitive مـ negates the wish form باد. In مگو, it negates an imperative. The prefix is related, but the clause types differ. Modern مبادا can introduce a forceful warning—“make sure you do not...” —and is less archaic than bare مباد. Compare the productive current pattern on Negative Imperative with نـ.
مبادا بدون دستکش به این محلول دست بزنید.
ma-bâdâ bedun-e dast-kesh be in mahlul dast be-zanid.
Make absolutely sure you do not touch this solution without gloves. (formal emphatic warning; current مبادا plus plural/polite verb)
The optative suffix ـاد beyond بودن
Historical present stems can take ـاد to express a wish, blessing, curse, or hoped-for event: کناد “may he/she do,” negative مکناد “may he/she not do.” These forms are (archaic/literary). The current subjunctive کند is not merely a shortened spelling of کناد; the two belong to different morphological histories and distributions.
خداوند کوشش این جوان را به نیکی پاداش دهاد.
khodâvand kushesh-e in javân râ be niki pâdâsh dahâd.
May God reward this young person's effort with goodness. (constructed archaic-style optative in ـاد)
بدخواه بر این خانه دست ستم مگشایاد.
bad-khâh bar in khâne dast-e setam ma-goshâyâd.
May no ill-wisher lay an oppressive hand on this house. (constructed archaic-style negative optative; مـ plus ـاد)
Forms such as دهاد and مگشایاد should be recognized, not generated in contemporary correspondence. Modern Persian would use خدا کند... or a present subjunctive. Their spelling may alternate by period and edition; a dictionary citation cannot substitute for checking the manuscript and meter.
What “injunctive” can and cannot mean here
In comparative Iranian grammar, injunctive names an ancient category particularly associated with prohibitions. In descriptions of Classical Persian, the term is sometimes applied more loosely to bare directive forms or residues inherited into مـ prohibitives. It is not a universally agreed, productive New Persian paradigm beside indicative and subjunctive.
در این شرح، مرو صورت نهی است؛ نامگذاری آن به «امر منفی» یا «بازماندهی ساخت نهی» به چارچوب تحلیل بستگی دارد.
dar in sharh, ma-rav surat-e nahy ast; nâm-gozâri-ye ân be «amr-e manfi» yâ «bâz-mânde-ye sâkht-e nahy» be châr-chub-e tahlil bastegi dârad.
In this commentary, مرو is a prohibitive form; whether it is labeled ‘negative imperative’ or ‘a residue of an injunctive construction’ depends on the analytical framework. (academic metalinguistic statement)
This terminological caution matters. Calling every مـ form an “injunctive mood” may falsely suggest a complete synchronous paradigm; refusing the term entirely can hide its comparative history. State which level—Old Iranian ancestry, Classical Persian function, or modern formula—you mean.
Poetic license and manuscript ambiguity
Meter can favor a prefixed or unprefixed form, the longer بادا over باد, or a contracted pronunciation. Poetic pressure is evidence for why an author selected a variant, not proof that grammatical contrast disappeared. Syntax and parallelism still constrain interpretation.
Unpointed باد can be the optative “may it be” or the noun “wind.” مکناد may be segmented as مـ + کن + ـاد, but a damaged or poorly spaced witness can obscure affix boundaries. An editor should report competing readings when syntax, meter, and manuscript evidence do not converge.
در مصراع «بر این دشت باد»، باد میتواند فعل دعایی یا اسم باد باشد و مصراع دوم باید ابهام را حل کند.
dar mesrâ'-e «bar in dasht bâd», bâd mi-tavânad fe'l-e do'âyi yâ esm-e bâd bâshad-o mesrâ'-e dovvom bâyad ebhâm râ hall konad.
In the hemistich بر این دشت باد, باد could be an optative verb or the noun ‘wind,’ and the second hemistich must resolve the ambiguity. (constructed editorial example)
Common Mistakes
1. Calling every historical بـ a subjunctive prefix
❌ بگفت یعنی «شاید بگوید».
Incorrect — بگفت contains the past stem گفت and normally reports a past event in historical narrative.
✅ بگفت در این حکایت برابر نشاندار گفت است.
be-goft dar in hekâyat barâbar-e neshân-dâr-e goft ast.
In this tale, بگفت is the marked counterpart of گفت.
2. Using مـ as the neutral modern negative imperative
❌ خواهش میکنم به من مگو کجا بودی.
Incorrect for an unmarked present-day request — مگو creates a poetic or archaizing voice.
✅ خواهش میکنم به من نگو چرا جلسه را ترک کردی.
khâhesh mi-konam be man na-gu cherâ jalase râ tark kardi.
Please don't tell me why you left the meeting. (neutral modern standard)
3. Inventing a regular modern optative paradigm
❌ برای هر شخص یک صورت رایج از کناد میسازیم.
Incorrect — inherited ـاد is principally a third-person historical wish form, not a productive current six-person tense.
✅ صورت کناد را در متن کهن به «باشد که انجام دهد» بازمینویسیم.
surat-e konâd râ dar matn-e kohan be «bâshad ke anjâm dahad» bâz-mi-nevisim.
In a modern paraphrase of the old text, we render کناد as ‘may he or she do it.’
4. Vocalizing باد without testing its syntax
❌ هر باد در شعر فعل دعایی است.
Incorrect — باد can also be the ordinary noun ‘wind’ or part of another construction.
✅ در زنده باد، صفت زنده و جایگاه پایانی فعل، خوانش دعایی را پشتیبانی میکند.
dar zende bâd, sefat-e zende-o jây-gâh-e pâyâni-ye fe'l, khân-esh-e do'âyi râ poshti-bâni mi-konad.
In زنده باد, the adjective زنده and the verb's final position support the optative reading.
Key Takeaways
- Historical بـ has wider aspectual, lexical, and discourse functions than the modern subjunctive prefix.
- مـ marks classical prohibitions and negative wishes; neutral modern commands normally use نـ.
- Inherited ـاد, especially باد, is principally a third-singular wish form, not a regular modern six-person paradigm.
- “Injunctive” must be defined: it may refer to comparative ancestry or prohibitive function, not necessarily a separate Classical Persian paradigm.
- Meter, syntax, morphology, and manuscript evidence must converge before an editor fixes one vocalization.
