Negative Present Subjunctive

The negative present subjunctive replaces the affirmative prefix introduced on Present Subjunctive Formation: بروم → نروم, بخوانی → نخوانی, بگویند → نگویند. It does not stack the two prefixes, and it does not use indicative نمی‌. The construction describes an event whose non-occurrence is wanted, required, possible, feared, or otherwise dependent on another expression.

English often uses not to plus an infinitive—“Try not to forget.” Persian again uses a finite present stem with its own subject ending: سعی کن فراموش نکنی.

Replace بـ with نـ

With present stem رو, the six forms are:

PersonAffirmative subjunctiveNegative subjunctiveStructure
Iبرومنرومنـ + رو + م
you (singular)بروینروینـ + رو + ی
he/she/itبرودنرودنـ + رو + د
weبرویمنرویمنـ + رو + یم
you (plural/polite)برویدنرویدنـ + رو + ید
theyبروندنروندنـ + رو + ند

بهتر است امشب تنها نروی.

behtar ast emshab tanhâ na-ravi.

It is better not to go alone tonight. (neutral advice)

شاید تا فردا جواب ندهند.

shâyad tâ fardâ javâb na-dahand.

They may not answer by tomorrow. (neutral standard; possibility of non-occurrence)

سعی کنید این شماره را گم نکنید.

sa'y konid in shomâre râ gom na-konid.

Try not to lose this number. (polite standard)

The personal endings are unchanged from the affirmative. Only the left edge of the verb changes.

💡
Use a replacement test: if the positive dependent form is بخوانم, its negative is نخوانم. Delete بـ, add نـ, and keep the same present stem and ending.

Negative subjunctive versus negative indicative

Compare نمی‌آید and نیاید. The first asserts a negative fact or pattern; the second embeds possible, desired, required, or feared non-arrival.

اتوبوس این ساعت‌ها نمی‌آید.

otobus in sâ'at-hâ nemi-âyad.

The bus doesn't come at these hours. (neutral standard; asserted habitual fact)

ممکن است اتوبوس امروز نیاید.

momken ast otobus emruz niyâyad.

The bus may not come today. (neutral standard; non-arrival is possible)

The contrast is mood, not simply time. Both can refer to now or later. نمی‌ presents the negative proposition as part of the speaker's assertion; subjunctive نـ places it under a licenser such as ممکن است، بهتر است، می‌خواهم، تا.

Purpose, prevention, and تا clauses

Negative subjunctives are especially common when someone acts to prevent an outcome, or when تا means “until/unless” and the main event waits for something to happen.

در را آرام بستم تا بچه بیدار نشود.

dar râ ârâm bastam tâ bachche bidâr na-shavad.

I closed the door quietly so that the child wouldn't wake up. (neutral standard; prevention)

تا رمز را وارد نکنی، صفحه باز نمی‌شود.

tâ ramz râ vâred na-koni, safhe bâz nemi-shavad.

The page won't open until you enter the password. (neutral instruction)

In the second sentence, نکنی is subjunctive because the entering is the unrealized boundary for the result; نمی‌شود is indicative because it states what the page does not do before that boundary. Identical English negatives can therefore require different Persian prefixes within one sentence.

Compound predicates

The negative prefix attaches to the finite light verb: تصمیم نگیرم، تماس نگیرد، آماده نشویم، فراموش نکنند. The nonverbal element remains intact.

می‌ترسم گروه به‌موقع آماده نشود.

mi-tarsam goruh be-mowqe' âmâde na-shavad.

I'm afraid the team may not be ready on time. (neutral standard)

خواهش می‌کنم تا پایان جلسه تصمیم نگیرید.

khâhesh mi-konam tâ pâyân-e jalase tasmim na-girid.

Please don't make a decision before the end of the meeting. (polite standard)

Affirmative بـ is often omitted with compound کردن, but there is no comparable omission of negative نـ: بررسی کنم versus بررسی نکنم. Negation must still be audible and written on the light verb.

Lexical preverbs come before negation

With a verb containing a lexical preverb, negative نـ is inserted between that preverb and the present stem: برگردم → برنگردم, بردارید → برندارید. The preverb is not itself the negated element.

ممکن است امشب به خانه برنگردم.

momken ast emshab be khâne bar-na-gardam.

I may not return home tonight. (neutral standard; برـ + نـ + گرد + م)

خواهش می‌کنم پوشه‌ی آبی را از روی میز برندارید.

khâhesh mi-konam pushe-ye âbi râ az ru-ye miz bar-na-dârid.

Please do not take the blue folder off the desk. (polite standard)

The placement is lexical and must be learned with the verb. برنگردم does not mean that برـ has become an independent word.

بودن and داشتن

Negative بودن is regular relative to subjunctive stem باشـ: نباشم، نباشی، نباشد.... Ordinary possessive داشتن uses a negative participial element plus باشـ: نداشته باشم، نداشته باشید.

ممکن است فردا در دفتر نباشم.

momken ast fardâ dar daftar na-bâsham.

I may not be in the office tomorrow. (neutral standard)

لازم نیست نسخه‌ی چاپی همراهتان داشته باشید.

lâzem nist noskhe-ye châpi hamrâh-etân dâshte bâshid.

You do not need to have a printed copy with you. (formal-neutral; scope of negation is on لازم نیست)

The second example matters because semantic negation need not always sit on the embedded verb. لازم نیست داشته باشید means “it is not necessary that you have it”; لازم است نداشته باشید would mean “it is necessary that you not have it.” Persian, like English, distinguishes those scopes.

Stress and colloquial forms

Negative subjunctive نـ is pronounced na- and normally bears the main stress of a simple form: نروم، نخوانی، نگوید. Before indicative می‌, negation instead has the allomorph ne-, producing نمی‌; mood is distinguished by the presence or absence of می‌, not by treating indicative negation as unstressed. With lexical preverbs, the stressed negative remains inside the word, as in برنگردم. Persian spelling does not mark stress, so it must be learned with the construction.

Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) reduces endings and some stems: نروم → نرم، نیاید → نیاد، نکنند → نکنن. The negative prefix remains; a reduced colloquial subjunctive never becomes an affirmative.

اگه تا شب زنگ نزنه، ممکنه نگران بشیم.

age tâ shab zang na-zane, momkene negarân beshim.

If he doesn't call by tonight, we may get worried. (informal, regional: Tehran)

💡
Negative meaning and subjunctive mood occupy the same prefix slot. That is why Persian uses نروم, not a form containing both نـ and بـ, and not indicative نمی‌روم after a subjunctive licenser.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping both prefixes

❌ بهتر است دیر نبروی.

Incorrect — negative نـ replaces affirmative بـ.

✅ بهتر است بعد از تاریکی بیرون نروی.

behtar ast ba'd az târiki birun na-ravi.

It is better not to go out after dark.

2. Substituting نمی‌ after a modal licenser

❌ ممکن است قطار نمی‌رسد.

Incorrect for 'may not arrive' — نمی‌رسد asserts non-arrival instead of embedding it as a possibility.

✅ ممکن است قطار تا ظهر نرسد.

momken ast qatâr tâ zohr na-rasad.

The train may not arrive by noon.

3. Putting negation before a lexical preverb

❌ امیدوارم نبرگردد دیر.

Incorrect form and word order — the negative of برگردد is برنگردد, and دیر belongs before the verb.

✅ امیدوارم امشب دیر برنگردد.

omidvâram emshab dir bar-na-gardad.

I hope she doesn't come back late tonight.

4. Negating the nonverbal part of a compound

❌ شاید ن تصمیم بگیرند.

Incorrect — نـ is a bound verbal prefix and attaches to گیرند.

✅ شاید امروز تصمیم نگیرند.

shâyad emruz tasmim na-girand.

They may not decide today.

Key Takeaways

  • Negative نـ replaces affirmative subjunctive بـ and attaches directly to the present stem.
  • Use نمی‌ for asserted negative facts and نـ under a subjunctive licenser.
  • Compound predicates carry negation on the light verb.
  • Lexical preverbs precede the negative prefix: برنگردم، برندارید.
  • Simple negative subjunctives normally stress na-; colloquial reductions preserve the negative prefix.
