Persian چنین chonin introduces a type already described or imaginable: چنین کاری “such an action/a thing like this.” چنان chonân can also mean “such,” but it is more elevated and frequently intensifies a degree before a result clause: چنان خسته بود که خوابش برد “she was so tired that she fell asleep.” Both normally come before the noun or expression they determine.
English such and so divide work that Persian distributes by structure and register. چنین + noun is productive in contemporary formal and neutral writing. چنان + noun is rhetorical or (literary), while چنان + adjective/adverb + که remains a productive formal way to express “so ... that.”
The core contrast
| Pattern | Example | Function | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| چنین + noun | چنین تصمیمی | such a decision; this kind of decision | neutral-formal |
| چنان + noun | چنان تصمیمی | such a decision, rhetorically distanced | formal/literary |
| چنان + adjective + که | چنان خسته بود که... | so tired that... | formal/literary-neutral |
| اینطور/اینجور + noun | اینجور کارها | this kind of thing | conversational |
| همچین + noun | همچین کاری | such a thing | informal, regional: Tehran |
چنین تصمیمی به بررسی بیشتری نیاز دارد.
chonin tasmim-i be barrasi-ye bishtari niyâz dârad.
Such a decision requires further examination. (formal)
چنان تصمیمی سرنوشت شهر را تغییر داد.
chonân tasmim-i sarnevesht-e shahr râ taghyir dâd.
Such a decision changed the city's fate. (literary/formal)
The facts could be identical, but چنان creates greater rhetorical distance or weight. It is not simply an old spelling of چنین.
چنین points to a type
چنین often picks up a property or situation from earlier discourse. It tells the listener to construct a class “things of this kind,” then select a member or members from it. That is why the following noun frequently carries indefinite ی: چنین پیشنهادی, چنین روزی, چنین فرصتی.
چنین پیشنهادی را نمیتوان بدون بودجه پذیرفت.
chonin pishnehâd-i râ nemi-tavân bedun-e budje paziroft.
A proposal of this kind cannot be accepted without a budget. (formal)
در چنین روزی بهتر است در خانه بمانیم.
dar chonin ruz-i behtar ast dar khâne bemânim.
On a day like this, it is better to stay home.
هیچکس انتظار چنین واکنشی را نداشت.
hich-kas entezâr-e chonin vâkonesh-i râ nadâsht.
No one expected such a reaction.
The suffix ی belongs to the noun phrase, not to چنین. Plural expressions are also possible: چنین مشکلاتی “such problems.”
No ezâfe follows the prenominal determiner
Like این and آن, چنین directly precedes its noun without ezâfe: chonin kâr-i, not chonin-e kâr-i. If an adjective follows the noun, ezâfe appears after the noun: چنین تصمیم مهمی chonin tasmim-e mohem-i.
چنین تصمیم مهمی نباید عجولانه گرفته شود.
chonin tasmim-e mohem-i nabâyad ajulâne gerefte shavad.
Such an important decision should not be made hastily. (formal)
چنین رفتار خشنی قابل قبول نیست.
chonin raftâr-e khoshen-i qâbel-e qabul nist.
Such violent behavior is not acceptable.
The final indefinite suffix scopes over the modified phrase. Ezâfe and ی can be adjacent in function while remaining distinct morphemes.
چنان in degree-result constructions
The highly productive pattern چنان + adjective/adverbial expression + که + result means “so ... that.” The degree established in the first clause explains the consequence in the second.
چنان خسته بود که روی مبل خوابش برد.
chonân khaste bud ke ru-ye mobl khâb-ash bord.
She was so tired that she fell asleep on the sofa.
چنان آرام حرف زد که صدایش را نشنیدم.
chonân ârâm harf zad ke sedâ-yash râ nashnidam.
He spoke so quietly that I did not hear his voice.
باران چنان شدید شد که خیابان بسته شد.
bârân chonân shadid shod ke khiyâbân baste shod.
The rain became so heavy that the street was closed.
The که clause supplies the result. Without it, چنان شدید can remain an elevated degree expression, but the full correlation makes the logic explicit. The broader result system is covered on Result Clauses.
چنان as a literary determiner
Before a noun, چنان often evokes something previously imagined, remote, or extraordinary: چنان سکوتی “such a silence,” چنان منظرهای “such a scene.” It remains understandable in modern prose but carries more rhetorical coloring than چنین.
چنان سکوتی در سالن حاکم شد که صدای ساعت شنیده میشد.
chonân sokut-i dar sâlon hâkem shod ke sedâ-ye sâ'at shenide mi-shod.
Such silence fell over the hall that the clock could be heard. (literary/formal)
چنان منظرهای پیش رویمان بود که همه ایستادند.
chonân manzare-i pish-e ru-ye-mân bud ke hame istâdand.
Such a view lay before us that everyone stopped. (literary)
This construction is productive, not obsolete. Its markedness lies in style and rhetorical force.
Neutral and colloquial alternatives
Contemporary conversation commonly uses اینطور, اینجور, اونطور, or همچین rather than formal چنین/چنان. These forms do not all have identical viewpoint: اینجور points to a type like this, اونجور to a type like that, and همچین is a broadly colloquial “such.”
اینجور اشتباهها معمولا با عجله پیش میآد.
in-jur eshtebâh-hâ ma'mulan bâ ajale pish mi-âd.
Mistakes like this usually happen through haste. (informal, regional: Tehran)
همچین کاری از تو بعید بود.
hamchin kâr-i az to ba'id bud.
Doing something like that was unlike you. (informal, regional: Tehran)
چنین اشتباههایی معمولا بر اثر شتاب رخ میدهد.
chonin eshtebâh-hâ-yi ma'mulan bar asar-e shetâb rokh mi-dahad.
Such errors usually occur as a result of haste. (formal)
These are register alternatives, not correctness corrections. Formal prose should not be made artificially conversational, and dialogue should not be forced into literary cadence.
Reference, indefiniteness, and را
چنین characterizes a type but does not by itself make an object nonspecific. A complete phrase can take را when the speaker refers to a particular proposal or behavior of that kind.
چنین پیشنهادی را قبلا هم شنیده بودم.
chonin pishnehâd-i râ qablan ham shenide budam.
I had heard such a proposal before.
Without را, چنین پیشنهادی شنیده بودم can present a less discourse-prominent instance. The difference belongs to Persian specificity, not to an absent English article.
A short contrastive exchange
آیا چنین تغییری واقعا لازم است؟
âyâ chonin taghyir-i vâqe'an lâzem ast?
Is such a change really necessary? (formal)
بله، وضع چنان جدی است که نمیتوان صبر کرد.
bale, vaz' chonân jeddi ast ke nemi-tavân sabr kard.
Yes, the situation is so serious that we cannot wait. (formal)
The first uses چنین to classify a proposed change; the second uses چنان to measure seriousness and license a result.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding ezâfe after چنین
❌ چنین تصمیمی
chonin-e tasmim-i
Incorrect — prenominal چنین directly determines the noun and takes no ezâfe.
✅ چنین تصمیمی پیامدهای زیادی دارد.
chonin tasmim-i payâmad-hâ-ye ziyâdi dârad.
Such a decision has many consequences.
2. Omitting ezâfe before a following adjective
❌ چنین تصمیم مهمی
chonin tasmim mohem-i
Incorrect reading — تصمیم takes ezâfe before attributive مهمی.
✅ چنین تصمیم مهمی به زمان نیاز دارد.
chonin tasmim-e mohem-i be zamân niyâz dârad.
Such an important decision requires time.
3. Omitting the result linker after a degree
❌ چنان هوا سرد شد همه برگشتند.
Incorrect result construction — که must introduce the consequence.
✅ هوا چنان سرد شد که همه برگشتند.
havâ chonân sard shod ke hame bargashtand.
The weather became so cold that everyone turned back.
4. Treating چنین as an English article plus adjective
❌ چنین یک مشکل را حل کردیم.
Incorrect ordinary order for ‘we solved such a problem’ — چنین directly determines مشکل; یک is not an article slot to fill.
✅ چنین مشکلی را قبلا حل کردهایم.
chonin moshkel-i râ qablan hal karde-im.
We have solved a problem like this before.
5. Letting را split the determined noun phrase
❌ چنین را تصمیمی قبول نکردم.
Incorrect — را follows the complete noun phrase چنین تصمیمی.
✅ چنین تصمیمی را بدون دلیل قبول نکردم.
chonin tasmim-i râ bedun-e dalil qabul nakardam.
I did not accept such a decision without a reason.
Key Takeaways
- چنین is the productive contemporary determiner for “such/this kind of” and precedes the noun without ezâfe.
- چنان is more rhetorical before nouns and productively marks high degree in چنان ... که.
- Indefinite ی commonly appears at the right edge of the phrase: چنین تصمیم مهمی.
- Conversational اینجور and همچین are valid register alternatives, not defective versions of چنین.
- These determiners classify a type; discourse and را independently determine specificity.
