Result Clauses with آن‌قدر and چنان | Farsi Grammar

Persian result clauses pair a degree expression with که: آن‌قدر خسته بودم که روی مبل خوابم برد “I was so tired that I fell asleep on the sofa.” The first clause establishes an unusually high degree or quantity; the که clause states its consequence. Because that consequence is normally presented as a fact, it usually takes the indicative, not the subjunctive.

آن‌قدر آرام حرف می‌زد که صدایش را نمی‌شنیدم.

ân-qadar ârâm harf mi-zad ke sedâ-yash râ nemi-shenidam.

She spoke so quietly that I could not hear her. (neutral; manner degree)

آن‌قدر کار داشتیم که ناهار را پشت میز خوردیم.

ân-qadar kâr dâshtim ke nâhâr râ posht-e miz khordim.

We had so much work that we ate lunch at our desks. (neutral; quantity)

English often uses separate so and that. Persian likewise requires a degree correlate for this meaning: bare که merely links clauses and does not itself mean “so ... that.”

The first half must contain a scale—cold, slowly, many, often—and the second half must be a consequence of reaching that degree.

Quantities and repeated actions

With count and mass meanings, آن‌قدر can modify the predicate or precede a noun. The noun need not be plural if quantity is already clear.

آن‌قدر پیام فرستاد که فرصت نکردم همه را بخوانم.

ân-qadar payâm ferestâd ke forsat na-kardam hame râ be-khânam.

He sent so many messages that I did not get a chance to read them all. (neutral; repeated action)

آن‌قدر قهوه خوردم که تا صبح خوابم نبرد.

ân-qadar qahve khordam ke tâ sobh khâb-am na-bord.

I drank so much coffee that I could not sleep until morning. (neutral conversation)

The sequence آن‌قدر که without an intervening scale can mean “to the extent that,” chiefly in formal prose, but learners should first master the productive degree frame.

چنان in formal and literary style

چنان can intensify an adjective or describe manner. It remains productive in elevated prose but sounds marked in ordinary conversation, where آن‌قدر or طوری is more natural.

باد چنان شدت گرفت که پروازها لغو شدند.

bâd chonân sheddat gereft ke parvâz-hâ laghv shodand.

The wind intensified to such a degree that the flights were cancelled. (formal)

او چنان با اطمینان سخن گفت که کسی تردید نکرد.

u chonân bâ etminân sokhan goft ke kasi tardid na-kard.

He spoke with such confidence that no one doubted him. (formal/literary)

اتاق انقدر شلوغ بود که جایی برای نشستن نبود.

otâq enqadar sholugh bud ke jâyi barâ-ye neshastan na-bud.

The room was so crowded that there was nowhere to sit. (informal, regional: Tehran; colloquial انقدر)

Standard writing retains آن‌قدر with ZWNJ. Do not import colloquial انقدر into formal prose.

Use آن‌قدر as the unmarked modern choice. Reserve چنان for deliberate formal or literary elevation, not routine conversation.

A short exchange

— چرا جلسه را زود تمام کردید؟ — بحث آن‌قدر تکراری شد که دیگر کسی سؤال نداشت.

— cherâ jalase râ zud tamâm kardid? — bahs ân-qadar tekrâri shod ke digar kasi so'âl na-dâsht.

— Why did you end the meeting early? — The discussion became so repetitive that nobody had any more questions. (neutral workplace conversation)

Common Mistakes

❌ هوا آن‌قدر که سرد بود آب یخ زد.

Incorrect — که closes the degree phrase too early; it follows the full scale predicate.

✅ هوا آن‌قدر سرد شد که لوله‌ها یخ زدند.

havâ ân-qadar sard shod ke lule-hâ yakh zadand.

It became so cold that the pipes froze.

❌ آن‌قدر خسته بودم تا خوابیدم.

Incorrect for a result — use که, not endpoint/purpose تا.

✅ آن‌قدر خسته بودم که لباس‌هایم را عوض نکردم.

ân-qadar khaste budam ke lebâs-hâ-yam râ avaz na-kardam.

I was so tired that I did not change my clothes.

❌ چنان خیلی آرام گفت که نشنیدم.

Incorrect — چنان and خیلی cannot stack as competing degree heads here.

✅ چنان آرام گفت که سخنش را نشنیدم.

chonân ârâm goft ke sokhan-ash râ na-shenidam.

He spoke so softly that I did not hear his words. (literary/formal)

❌ آن‌قدر باران بارید که خیابان خیس بشود شد.

Incorrect — the factual result takes one finite indicative form.

✅ آن‌قدر باران بارید که خیابان‌ها بسته شدند.

ân-qadar bârân bârid ke khiyâbân-hâ baste shodand.

It rained so much that the streets were closed.
