Explaining Reasons and Results

To explain why something happened and what followed, Persian distinguishes subordinators that attach a reason to a main clause from connectors that begin a result. چون and برای اینکه introduce clauses; به دلیل normally takes a noun phrase; بنابراین links a conclusion to earlier discourse. Choosing among them is partly grammatical and partly a matter of register.

The transferable principle is simple: decide whether the expression introduces a cause, a purpose, or a consequence before translating English because, so, or because of.

A cause-and-result map

ExpressionWhat followsTypical job and register
چونfinite clauseordinary reason; neutral speech and writing
برای اینکهfinite clausereason or purpose; neutral, often explicit
به دلیلnoun phraseformal reason in reports and notices
بنابراینindependent result clauseformal-neutral logical consequence
برای همینindependent result clauseneutral conversation
پسconclusion or next movevery frequent in speech; neutral to informal

چون: the everyday reason clause

چون answers چرا؟ “why?” It can introduce the reason before the result or follow the main clause as an explanation.

چون راه اصلی بسته بود، از مسیر دیگری رفتیم.

chun râh-e asli baste bud, az masir-e digari raftim.

Because the main road was closed, we took another route. (neutral; reason first)

از مسیر دیگری رفتیم چون راه اصلی بسته بود.

az masir-e digari raftim chun râh-e asli baste bud.

We took another route because the main road was closed. (neutral; result first)

Reason-first order frames the explanation before the listener hears the consequence. Result-first order states the news and then answers the likely “why?” Persian allows both because each clause keeps its own natural internal order. The broader ordering options are mapped under Subordinate Clauses before and after the Matrix.

جلسه را زود تمام کردیم چون چند نفر باید به فرودگاه می‌رفتند.

jalase râ zud tamâm kardim chun chand nafar bâyad be forudgâh mi-raftand.

We ended the meeting early because several people had to go to the airport. (neutral explanation)

💡
Put the reason first when it frames the whole decision; put it second when the decision is the news and the reason is supporting information.

برای اینکه: reason or purpose

برای اینکه can give a reason, especially when the speaker wants an explicit full clause. In many everyday contexts, چون is shorter and more idiomatic.

برای اینکه حالم خوب نبود، در خانه ماندم.

barâ-ye in-ke hâl-am khub nabud, dar khâne mândam.

Because I wasn't feeling well, I stayed home. (neutral; explicit reason)

The same connector introduces a purpose when the following event is a desired, projected outcome. That complement normally uses the subjunctive:

زود راه افتادیم برای اینکه به ترافیک نخوریم.

zud râh oftâdim barâ-ye in-ke be terâfik nakhorim.

We set off early so that we wouldn't hit traffic. (neutral; purpose, not cause)

In the reason example, poor health was already true and caused staying home. In the purpose example, avoiding traffic was not yet a fact; it was the goal of leaving early. English because versus so that often helps, but Persian mood and context carry the decisive distinction.

به دلیل: package the cause as a noun phrase

به دلیل is frequent in formal notices, news, and academic prose. It normally precedes a noun phrase, not a bare finite clause.

به دلیل بارش شدید، پرواز ساعت هشت لغو شد.

be dalil-e bâresh-e shadid, parvâz-e sâ'at-e hasht laghv shod.

Because of heavy precipitation, the eight o'clock flight was canceled. (formal notice)

ثبت‌نام به دلیل نقص فنی سامانه یک روز تمدید شد.

sabt-nâm be dalil-e naqs-e fanni-ye sâmâne yek ruz tamdid shod.

Registration was extended by one day because of a technical problem with the system. (formal)

For a full clause, formal Persian can use به دلیل اینکه, but piling it into casual speech often sounds bureaucratic. Compare neutral چون سامانه مشکل داشت with formal به دلیل اینکه سامانه دچار نقص فنی بود.

Therefore: move from cause to consequence

بنابراین does not subordinate a reason. It points backward to already established evidence and introduces an independent conclusion or result. It commonly follows a full stop or semicolon in careful writing.

سامانه تا ظهر در دسترس نبود؛ بنابراین مهلت ارسال مدارک تمدید شد.

sâmâne tâ zohr dar dastres nabud; banâbar-in mohlat-e ersâl-e madârek tamdid shod.

The system was unavailable until noon; therefore, the document-submission deadline was extended. (formal-neutral)

In conversation, برای همین is usually warmer and less argumentative:

دیشب خوب نخوابیدم؛ برای همین امروز کمی حواسم پرت است.

dishab khub nakhâbidam; barâ-ye hamin emruz kami havâs-am part ast.

I didn't sleep well last night, so I'm a little distracted today. (neutral conversation)

قطار تأخیر دارد، پس به جلسه نمی‌رسیم.

qatâr ta'khir dârad, pas be jalase nemi-rasim.

The train is delayed, so we won't make the meeting. (neutral conversation)

💡
چون looks forward from a reason to its main clause. بنابراین, برای همین, and پس look backward to a reason already stated and introduce what follows from it.

A connected workplace explanation

چون دو فایل ناقص بود، گزارش را صبح نفرستادم. نسخه‌های درست را عصر دریافت کردم؛ بنابراین گزارش نهایی را تا پایان روز تحویل می‌دهم.

chun do fâyl nâqes bud, gozâresh râ sobh naferestâdam. noskhe-hâ-ye dorost râ asr daryâft kardam; banâbar-in gozâresh-e nahâyi râ tâ pâyân-e ruz tahvil mi-daham.

Because two files were incomplete, I did not send the report in the morning. I received the correct versions in the afternoon; therefore, I will submit the final report by the end of the day. (formal-neutral connected explanation)

The first sentence embeds a cause. The second establishes new evidence, and بنابراین draws the practical conclusion. This is clearer than attaching every clause with چون.

Common Mistakes

Putting a bare finite clause after به دلیل

❌ به دلیل باران شدید می‌بارید، مسابقه لغو شد.

Incorrect — به دلیل requires a noun phrase here, not an independent finite clause.

✅ به دلیل باران شدید، مسابقه لغو شد.

be dalil-e bârân-e shadid, mosâbeqe laghv shod.

Because of the heavy rain, the match was canceled.

Using a factual past as though it were a purpose

❌ زود راه افتادیم برای اینکه به ترافیک نخوردیم.

Incorrect for the intended purpose — نخوردیم asserts a completed fact instead of a projected goal.

✅ زود راه افتادیم تا به ترافیک نخوریم.

zud râh oftâdim tâ be terâfik nakhorim.

We left early so that we wouldn't hit traffic.

Treating بنابراین like because

⚠️ بنابراین اینترنت قطع بود، نتوانستم تماس بگیرم.

banâbar-in internet qat' bud, natavânestam tamâs begiram.

Possible only if بنابراین points back to an earlier cause and presents the outage as a result; it cannot itself mean ‘because the internet was down.’

✅ اینترنت قطع بود؛ بنابراین نتوانستم تماس بگیرم.

internet qat' bud; banâbar-in natavânestam tamâs begiram.

The internet was down; therefore, I couldn't call.

Repeating both connectors in a simple causal sentence

⚠️ چون هوا سرد بود، بنابراین پنجره را بستم.

chun havâ sard bud, banâbar-in panjare râ bastam.

Grammatical but needlessly double-marked in an ordinary simple explanation; چون alone is lighter here.

✅ چون هوا سرد بود، پنجره را بستم.

chun havâ sard bud, panjare râ bastam.

Because it was cold, I closed the window.

Key Takeaways

  • Use چون + finite clause for an ordinary reason and به دلیل + noun phrase for a formal packaged cause.
  • برای اینکه can introduce either a factual reason or a projected purpose; viewpoint and mood distinguish them.
  • بنابراین introduces a formal-neutral consequence; برای همین and پس are common conversational alternatives.
  • Reason-first order frames the decision; result-first order states the news before explaining it.
