Expressing Opinions and Stance

Persian speakers can present an opinion as a personal viewpoint, a considered belief, a tentative suggestion, or a strong judgment. به نظر من frames the proposition as “in my opinion”; فکر می‌کنم (که) presents it as what the speaker thinks; hedges such as شاید، احتمالا، تا حدی reduce commitment. Agreement and disagreement then respond to both the content and the social force of the first turn.

The key communicative choice is not merely “Which phrase means I think?” It is how strongly you want to own the claim, how much room you leave for another view, and whether the situation is conversational, professional, or academic.

به نظر من: mark a viewpoint, not a fact

به نظر من normally comes before the proposition it frames. It does not require که because it is a prepositional stance phrase, not a complement-taking verb.

به نظر من این مسیر برای دوچرخه امن‌تر است.

be nazar-e man in masir barâ-ye docharkhe amn-tar ast.

In my opinion, this route is safer for bicycles. (neutral standard)

به نظرم بهتر است جلسه را یک ساعت عقب بیندازیم.

be nazar-am behtar ast jalase râ yek sâ'at aqab biyandâzim.

I think it would be better to postpone the meeting by an hour. (neutral conversation; compact clitic form)

به نظرم contains possessive ـم, literally “to my view.” Do not add another من unless you intend strong contrast: به نظر من or به نظرم, not an accidental blend.

💡
به نظر من scopes over the following proposition. It tells the listener how to interpret the claim; it is not the grammatical subject of that claim.

فکر می‌کنم and its content

فکر می‌کنم takes a finite proposition, optionally introduced by که. The complement keeps its own subject, tense, and polarity. In conversation, که is often omitted when the boundary is clear; careful writing retains it more readily with a long complement.

فکر می‌کنم قطار تا ده دقیقه‌ی دیگر می‌رسد.

fekr mi-konam qatâr tâ dah daqiqe-ye digar mi-rasad.

I think the train will arrive within ten minutes. (neutral conversation; که omitted)

فکر می‌کنم که این تغییر در بلندمدت هزینه‌ها را کاهش می‌دهد.

fekr mi-konam ke in taghyir dar boland-moddat hazine-hâ râ kâhesh mi-dahad.

I think this change will reduce costs in the long term. (careful or formal-neutral)

An affirmative assessed belief normally has an indicative complement. Persian does not automatically use the subjunctive merely because English begins with I think. A subjunctive directly after فکر می‌کنم is nevertheless possible when the speaker deliberately presents the assessment as tentative or doubtful; it is not the neutral form of a straightforward prediction. Subjunctive mood also becomes natural when another expression makes the content desired or proposed.

Hedge without becoming vague

A good hedge states both the degree of commitment and the point being limited. شاید marks possibility; احتمالا marks probability; تا حدی limits the extent of agreement; مطمئن نیستم explicitly suspends certainty.

احتمالا این روش برای گروه‌های کوچک بهتر جواب می‌دهد.

ehtemâlan in ravesh barâ-ye goruh-hâ-ye kuchak behtar javâb mi-dahad.

This method will probably work better for small groups. (neutral-formal hedge)

مطمئن نیستم که این بودجه برای کل پروژه کافی باشد.

motma'en nistam ke in budje barâ-ye koll-e porozhe kâfi bâshad.

I'm not sure this budget is sufficient for the whole project. (polite professional hedge)

تا حدی موافقم، اما زمان اجرای طرح مناسب نیست.

tâ haddi movâfeq-am, ammâ zamân-e ejrâ-ye tarh monâseb nist.

I agree to some extent, but the timing of the plan is not suitable. (neutral professional disagreement)

The hedge does not excuse an incomplete claim. شاید خوب باشد is useful only when the audience knows what it refers to.

Agree with the proposition or one part of it

Persian موافق بودن selects با for the person, proposal, or view agreed with. من هم همین‌طور فکر می‌کنم aligns with the other speaker's conclusion without repeating it.

من هم با پیشنهاد شما موافقم.

man ham bâ pishnehâd-e shomâ movâfeq-am.

I agree with your proposal too. (polite standard)

دقیقا؛ من هم فکر می‌کنم باید اول با ساکنان صحبت کنیم.

daqiqan; man ham fekr mi-konam bâyad avval bâ sâkenân sohbat konim.

Exactly; I also think we should speak with the residents first. (neutral discussion)

In formal academic prose, agreement is often tied to evidence rather than a person: این نتیجه با یافته‌های پژوهش پیشین سازگار است “This result is consistent with the previous study's findings.”

Disagree while preserving the conversation

Direct اشتباه می‌کنید “you are mistaken” can be appropriate when correction is the explicit task, but it is strong. Professional Persian often acknowledges part of the other view, then locates the disagreement.

حرفتان را می‌فهمم، ولی فکر می‌کنم این راه‌حل هزینه‌ی پنهان دارد.

harf-etân râ mi-fahmam, vali fekr mi-konam in râh-hal hazine-ye penhân dârad.

I understand your point, but I think this solution has a hidden cost. (polite professional disagreement)

با اصل پیشنهاد موافقم؛ فقط درباره‌ی زمان اجرا تردید دارم.

bâ asl-e pishnehâd movâfeq-am; faqat darbâre-ye zamân-e ejrâ tardid dâram.

I agree with the proposal in principle; I only have doubts about the timing. (formal-neutral)

This structure narrows the dispute. It is more informative than a vague موافق نیستم and less confrontational than rejecting the speaker personally.

💡
Separate the person from the proposition. Persian disagreement sounds more cooperative when you identify the exact claim, evidence, or implementation detail you reject.

A short discussion

— به نظر من باید جلسات را آنلاین کنیم. — تا حدی موافقم، اما فکر می‌کنم جلسه‌ی اول بهتر است حضوری باشد. — درست می‌گویید؛ شاید برای جلسات بعدی روش آنلاین مناسب‌تر باشد.

— be nazar-e man bâyad jalasât râ ânlâyn konim. — tâ haddi movâfeq-am, ammâ fekr mi-konam jalase-ye avval behtar ast hozuri bâshad. — dorost mi-guyid; shâyad barâ-ye jalasât-e ba'di ravesh-e ânlâyn monâseb-tar bâshad.

— In my opinion, we should hold the meetings online. — I partly agree, but I think the first meeting should be in person. — You're right; perhaps the online format would suit the later meetings better. (polite professional discussion)

Common Mistakes

Translating in my opinion with در

⚠️ در نظر من این راه بهتر است.

dar nazar-e man in râh behtar ast.

Possible with a literal or evaluative ‘in my eyes’ reading, but not the neutral stance frame; use به نظر من or از نظر من for ordinary ‘in my opinion.’

✅ به نظر من این راه ساده‌تر است.

be nazar-e man in râh sâde-tar ast.

In my opinion, this route is simpler.

Leaving فکر without its light verb

❌ من فکر که این تصمیم درست است.

Incorrect — the stance predicate is فکر می‌کنم.

✅ فکر می‌کنم این تصمیم منطقی است.

fekr mi-konam in tasmim manteqi ast.

I think this decision is reasonable.

Using the subjunctive after an ordinary affirmative belief

⚠️ فکر می‌کنم قطار ساعت هفت برسد.

fekr mi-konam qatâr sâ'at-e haft berasad.

Grammatical with a deliberately tentative or doubtful estimate; it is not the neutral form of a straightforward prediction.

✅ فکر می‌کنم قطار ساعت هفت می‌رسد.

fekr mi-konam qatâr sâ'at-e haft mi-rasad.

I think the train arrives at seven.

Omitting با with موافق بودن

❌ من پیشنهاد شما موافقم.

Incorrect — the thing agreed with is introduced by با.

✅ من با بخش دوم پیشنهاد شما موافقم.

man bâ bakhsh-e dovvom-e pishnehâd-e shomâ movâfeq-am.

I agree with the second part of your proposal.

Key Takeaways

  • Use به نظر من / به نظرم to frame a personal viewpoint and فکر می‌کنم (که) to introduce a finite belief or prediction.
  • Choose a hedge that specifies possibility, probability, limited agreement, or uncertainty.
  • موافق بودن takes با; agreement may target a person, proposal, or finding.
  • Effective disagreement acknowledges what is understood and identifies the exact point of difference.
