Persian builds free-choice expressions from هر “each/every” plus nouns or relative elements. هرگونه تغییر means “any kind of change,” especially in formal rules and warnings. هرچه میخواهید means “whatever you want,” with هرچه introducing a free relative whose value remains unrestricted. Related forms such as هر نوع, هر کدام, هرکس, and هرقدر divide the same semantic territory by noun class and clause type.
English any is notoriously broad: it can mean free choice, a polarity-sensitive indefinite, or even an approximate amount. Persian does not use one form for all three. The licensing environment matters. Modals, conditionals, generic rules, imperatives, and concessive clauses readily support free-choice readings; a plain episodic affirmative often requires a more specific indefinite instead. Under ordinary clause negation, English polarity-sensitive any is normally expressed with هیچ and a negative verb, not by substituting هرگونه. See هیچ and Negative Polarity for that separate pattern.

The following noun after هرگونه or هر نوع is morphologically singular. The construction ranges over possible kinds; plural morphology on the restrictor is normally redundant.
هرگونه: unrestricted kind in formal prose
هرگونه is especially frequent where a rule must cover every possible manifestation of an act or object. It is written as one word and directly precedes a singular noun: هرگونه تغییر, هرگونه استفاده, هرگونه تماس.
هرگونه تغییر در برنامه باید پیشاپیش اعلام شود.
hargune taghyir dar barnâme bâyad pishâpish e'lâm shavad.
Any change to the schedule must be announced in advance. (formal/administrative)
از هرگونه تماس مستقیم با ماده خودداری کنید.
az hargune tamâs-e mostaqim bâ mâdde khoddâri konid.
Avoid any direct contact with the substance. (formal safety instruction)
سامانه هرگونه تلاش برای ورود غیرمجاز را ثبت میکند.
sâmâne hargune talâsh barâ-ye vorud-e gheyr-e mojâz râ sabt mi-konad.
The system records any attempt at unauthorized access. (formal/technical)
Negative and preventive contexts strengthen the exhaustive reading: no possible kind is exempt. In a plain affirmative report about one actual event, نوعی or an ordinary indefinite is more natural. نوعی خطا رخ داد means “a kind of error occurred”; هرگونه خطا رخ داد cannot normally mean “some error occurred.”
هر نوع and other compound-like determiners
The open phrase هر نوع is close to هرگونه but makes the classification noun نوع more visible. A following nominal is linked by ezâfe: هر نوع درخواست har now'-e darkhâst “any type of request.” هر شکل, هر میزان, and هر مورد likewise choose a dimension or unit explicitly.
این مجوز برای هر نوع فعالیت تجاری لازم است.
in mojavvez barâ-ye har now'-e fa'âliyyat-e tejâri lâzem ast.
This permit is required for every type of commercial activity. (formal)
هر کدام از این روشها مزیت خاصی دارد.
har kodâm az in ravesh-hâ maziyyat-e khâssi dârad.
Each of these methods has a particular advantage. (formal-neutral)
هر کدام selects individuals, while هرگونه quantifies over types. Replacing one with the other can change the ontology of the statement: methods are individual alternatives; changes can instantiate different kinds.
هرچه as a free relative: “whatever”
هرچه fuses هر with interrogative/relative چه and introduces a clause whose missing value is unrestricted. The entire expression can be a subject, object, or complement.
هرچه گفتی درست بود.
harche gofti dorost bud.
Whatever you said was correct. (free relative as subject)
هرچه لازم داری از انبار بردار.
harche lâzem dâri az anbâr bardâr.
Take whatever you need from the storeroom. (free relative as object; neutral instruction)
نتیجه هرچه باشد، باید آن را شفاف اعلام کنیم.
natije harche bâshad, bâyad ân râ shaffâf e'lâm konim.
Whatever the result may be, we must announce it transparently. (formal concessive linkage)
The third sentence links a free-choice subordinate clause to a main assertion: the obligation holds across every possible result. Persian may use subjunctive باشد because the value is open rather than asserted as fact.
The object marker را is not mechanically required after هرچه. In هرچه لازم داری بردار, the free relative is tightly integrated and zero marking is natural. More explicit هرچه را که لازم داری بردار is possible, especially when the phrase is contrastive or formally articulated, but can sound heavier.
Amount and concessive readings
With scalar predicates, هرچه can mean “however much” or participate in a correlative: هرچه بیشتر بخوانی، بهتر مینویسی “The more you read, the better you write.” The dedicated adjective page treats that proportional construction. Free-choice amount هرقدر makes the degree variable explicit.
هرقدر وقت لازم داری صرف بررسی مدارک کن.
harqadar vaqt lâzem dâri sarf-e barrasi-ye madârek kon.
Spend however much time you need reviewing the documents. (formal-neutral)
هرچه تلاش کرد، نتوانست در را باز کند.
harche talâsh kard, natavânest dar râ bâz konad.
However much he or she tried, they could not open the door. (concessive)
Here هرچه تلاش کرد is not an object meaning “whatever was tried.” It measures an unbounded degree of effort and concedes that even that effort failed. Clause position, verb meaning, and intonation identify the reading.
Polarity and episodic restrictions
Free-choice expressions flourish under modality, conditionals, imperatives, concessives, and generics because the proposition is evaluated across alternatives. A negative or prohibitive rule can also take هرگونه when the denial extends exhaustively across kinds; that is distinct from the polarity-sensitive هیچ construction used in an ordinary negative such as “I didn't see any leak.”
اگر هرگونه نشتی دیدید، دستگاه را خاموش کنید.
agar hargune nashti didid, dastgâh râ khâmush konid.
If you notice any leakage, turn off the device. (formal conditional instruction)
By contrast, an affirmative episodic report normally identifies what occurred: نشتی کوچکی دیدم “I noticed a small leak,” not هرگونه نشتی دیدم. The latter suggests an exhaustive survey only in a specially constructed context, not ordinary existential any.
This is why English-to-Persian substitution fails. English I bought any book is itself restricted; Persian selects کتابی, یک کتاب, or a free-choice relative such as هر کتابی که پیدا کردم خریدم according to the intended reference.
Standard and colloquial forms
Everyday Tehran speech reduces هرچه to هرچی and often combines it with colloquial verb forms. هرگونه remains bureaucratic and is normally replaced by هر جور “any way/kind” or a more concrete phrase.
هرچی میخوای بردار، فقط عجله کن.
harchi mi-khây bardâr, faqat ajale kon.
Take whatever you want; just hurry. (informal, regional: Tehran)
هر جور راحتی انجامش بده.
har jur râhati anjâm-esh bede.
Do it whichever way you're comfortable with. (informal, regional: Tehran)
These are normal conversational equivalents, not errors. Formal هرگونه should not be inserted into casual dialogue merely to sound educated.
Common Mistakes
1. Pluralizing directly after هرگونه
❌ هرگونه تغییرات باید اعلام شود.
Incorrect — هرگونه already ranges over kinds; the following noun is singular.
✅ هرگونه تغییر باید اعلام شود.
hargune taghyir bâyad e'lâm shavad.
Any change must be announced.
2. Using هرگونه as an affirmative indefinite article
❌ هرگونه صدایی از حیاط شنیدم.
Incorrect for ‘I heard a sound’—an episodic existential needs an ordinary indefinite.
✅ صدایی از حیاط شنیدم.
sedâ-yi az hayât shenidam.
I heard a sound from the yard.
3. Forcing را after every free relative
❌ هرچه را گفتی درست بود.
Incorrect in the intended subject reading — را cannot mark the free relative that serves as subject.
✅ هرچه گفتی درست بود.
harche gofti dorost bud.
Whatever you said was correct.
4. Treating هرچی as unmarked formal prose
❌ متقاضی هرچی مدرک دارد ارائه کند.
Incorrect register selection for a formal instruction — use هرچه in edited prose.
✅ متقاضی هرچه مدرک دارد ارائه کند.
motaqâzi harche madrak dârad erâ'e konad.
The applicant must submit whatever documentation they have. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- هرگونه + singular noun means “any kind/form of” and belongs especially to formal rules, conditions, and prohibitions.
- هرچه + clause forms “whatever” free relatives and can also express unrestricted amount or concession.
- هر کدام, هر نوع, and هرقدر specify individuals, types, and degrees respectively.
- Free-choice forms are licensed naturally by negation, modality, conditionals, imperatives, and generic statements; episodic affirmatives often need ordinary indefinites.
- Colloquial هرچی and هر جور are real informal forms; را depends on syntactic role and specificity, not on free choice alone.
