Persian هیچ hich introduces an empty or potentially empty quantity. In a negative statement, هیچ کتابی نخواندم means “I read no books / I didn't read any book.” In a question, هیچ خبری داری؟ means “Do you have any news?” The English words no and any therefore correspond to different uses of one Persian negative-polarity item.
The central rule is negative concord. For the “no” reading in an ordinary declarative clause, هیچ does not replace verbal negation; it appears together with a negative verb. The following count noun is normally singular and commonly takes ـی: هیچ دانشجویی نیامد “No student came.”
Core environments
| Environment | Pattern | Meaning | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| negative statement | هیچ کتابی نخواندم | I read no book / no books | negative verb required |
| yes–no question | هیچ خبری داری؟ | Do you have any news? | question licenses “any” |
| conditional | اگر هیچ مشکلی بود | if there was any problem | non-assertive possibility |
| free choice | هر کتابی | any/whichever book | use هر, not plain هیچ |
هیچ is not an article meaning English a or the. It quantifies over possible members and says that none is asserted, or asks whether even one exists.
“No” requires a negative verb
In a statement that denies existence or occurrence, the verb carries نـ/نمیـ as well as the noun phrase containing هیچ. The two negative elements express one semantic negation rather than cancelling each other.
هیچ دانشجویی امروز غایب نبود.
hich dâneshju-yi emruz ghâyeb nabud.
No student was absent today. (neutral standard)
هیچ پولی برای تاکسی نداشتم.
hich puli barâ-ye tâksi nadâshtam.
I had no money for a taxi. (neutral standard)
در این گزارش هیچ اشارهای به هزینهها نشده است.
dar in gozâresh hich eshâre-i be hazine-hâ nashode ast.
No reference to the costs has been made in this report. (formal written standard)
The suffix ـی helps form the indefinite member over which negation ranges: “not one student,” “not any money,” “not a single reference.” It does not make the phrase positive or supply an English article.
Noun number after هیچ
A count noun directly restricted by هیچ is normally singular: هیچ سؤالـی, هیچ روزی, هیچ مسافری. The quantifier already ranges over all possible individual members, so plural ـها is unnecessary in the basic pattern.
هیچ اتاقی در آن هتل خالی نبود.
hich otâqi dar ân hotel khâli nabud.
No room in that hotel was vacant. (neutral standard)
هیچ قطاری بعد از نیمهشب حرکت نمیکند.
hich qatâri ba'd az nime-shab harekat nemi-konad.
No train departs after midnight. (neutral standard)
The singular subject takes singular agreement. Mass nouns also occur, but Persian selects a contextually appropriate unit or amount: هیچ آبی نمانده “no water remains,” هیچ اطلاعاتی نداریم “we have no information.” Inherited plural-looking اطلاعات is lexical; اطلاعاتی functions as the conventional mass-like expression here.
“Any” in questions and conditions
Questions do not assert that a member exists, so they can license هیچ without a negative verb. The speaker asks whether the quantity is greater than zero, often with an expectation that it may not be.
هیچ خبری از نادر داری؟
hich khabari az nâder dâri?
Do you have any news from Nader? (careful spoken standard)
هیچ سؤالی دربارهی قرارداد دارید؟
hich so'âli darbâre-ye qarârdâd dârid?
Do you have any questions about the contract? (polite/formal)
A condition similarly leaves existence open:
اگر هیچ مشکلی پیش آمد، به من زنگ بزن.
agar hich moshkeli pish âmad, be man zang bezan.
If any problem comes up, call me. (neutral standard)
Affirmative declaratives behave differently. هیچ سؤالی دارم cannot normally mean “I have any question.” Say سؤالی دارم “I have a question” or چند سؤال دارم “I have a few questions.”
هیچ is not unrestricted free choice
English any has at least two meanings. Negative-polarity any appears in “I don't have any book”; free-choice any appears in “Choose any book.” Persian normally uses هیچ for the first and هر ... ـی or هرکدام for the second.
هیچ کتابی را برنداشتم.
hich ketâbi râ bar-nadâshtam.
I did not take any book. (negative-polarity reading)
هر کتابی را که دوست داری بردار.
har ketâbi râ ke dust dâri bardâr.
Take whichever book you like. (free choice)
In the second sentence, the relative clause delimits the choice and را follows the whole specific object phrase. Replacing هر with هیچ would wrongly invite a negative or question-like environment. See هر and Free-Choice Determination.
Specificity and را
Plain هیچ + noun normally introduces a nonspecific empty set, so it is often used without را. را can occur when a larger construction creates a delimited set or a contrastive exhaustive reading, but it is not required merely because English uses the.
Compare هیچ کتابی نخواندم “I read no books” with more explicitly set-oriented هیچیک از این کتابها را نخواندم “I read none of these books.” The latter pronominal pattern belongs to the negative-indefinite system; the practical point here is that را follows the complete delimited object.
A short dialogue
هیچ ایمیلی از شرکت نیامده؟
hich imeyli az sherkat niyâmade?
Hasn't any email come from the company? (careful spoken standard)
نه، هنوز هیچ جوابی ندادهاند.
na, hanuz hich javâbi nadâde-and.
No, they still haven't given any answer. (careful spoken standard)
یعنی دیگه هیچ کاری لازم نیست بکنم؟
ya'ni dige hich kâri lâzem nist bekonam?
So I don't need to do anything else anymore? (informal, regional: Tehran)
The last line combines colloquial دیگه with negative-polarity هیچ کاری. The negative predicate لازم نیست licenses the empty-set reading.
Common Mistakes
1. Using an affirmative verb for the “no” reading
❌ هیچ دانشجویی آمد.
Incorrect for ‘no student came’ — a declarative no-reading requires verbal negation.
✅ هیچ دانشجویی نیامد.
hich dâneshju-yi niyâmad.
No student came.
2. Pluralizing directly after هیچ
❌ هیچ کتابها را نخریدم.
Incorrect — the basic هیچ phrase takes a singular count noun, normally with ـی.
✅ هیچ کتابی نخریدم.
hich ketâbi nakharidam.
I didn't buy any books.
3. Treating هیچ as free-choice “any”
❌ هیچ صندلیای را که میخواهی انتخاب کن.
Incorrect — an unrestricted choice needs هر, not negative-polarity هیچ.
✅ هر صندلیای را که میخواهی انتخاب کن.
har sandali-i râ ke mi-khâhi entekhâb kon.
Choose whichever chair you want.
4. Adding را as though it were an article
❌ هیچ مسافری را نرسید.
Incorrect — مسافری is the subject; را does not mark English definiteness or subjecthood.
✅ هیچ مسافری نرسید.
hich mosâferi narasid.
No passenger arrived.
Key Takeaways
- In a declarative “no/any” sentence, هیچ normally co-occurs with a negative verb.
- A directly following count noun is singular and commonly bears ـی: هیچ کتابی.
- Questions and conditions license an “any” reading without obligatory verbal negation.
- Use هر ... ـی for affirmative free choice; plain هیچ is not a universal replacement for English any.
- را reflects the specificity and clause role of the complete phrase, not a missing article slot.
