In a Persian negative declarative, a هیچ-expression and a negative finite verb normally work together: هیچکس نیامد means “nobody came.” This is negative concord—several visibly negative pieces can express a single semantic negation. English usually puts the negative force either in nobody or in did not, so an English speaker must resist both deleting Persian verbal negation and counting every Persian negative-looking form as a separate logical “not.”
This page assumes that you already know the forms themselves. For their spelling, meanings, and basic paradigm, use Negative هیچکس and هیچچیز. The issue here is how clause type, syntactic role, را, order, and focus determine their licensing and interpretation.
One semantic negation across the clause
The finite predicate establishes negative polarity in an ordinary declarative. A هیچ-expression inside its clause specifies which domain is empty: people, things, places, times, or members of a known set. Two such expressions can restrict two domains under the same negative predicate.
| Role in the clause | Typical placement | Contribution under verbal negation |
|---|---|---|
| subject | هیچکس ... نـفعل | no person satisfies the predicate |
| direct object | هیچکس را / هیچچیز ... نـفعل | the event affects no relevant person or thing |
| place or time | هیچجا / هیچوقت ... نـفعل | no relevant location or time satisfies the claim |
| two concord items | هیچکس ... هیچچیز نـفعل | one negation has scope over both domains |
هیچکس در جلسه دربارهی بودجه هیچچیز نگفت.
hich-kas dar jalase darbâre-ye budje hich-chiz na-goft.
Nobody said anything about the budget at the meeting. (neutral standard; two concord items, one negation)
دیشب هیچجا غذای گرم پیدا نکردیم.
dishab hich-jâ ghazâ-ye garm peydâ na-kardim.
Last night we could not find hot food anywhere. (neutral standard; place expression)
او هیچوقت قولش را فراموش نکرده است.
u hich-vaqt qowl-ash râ farâmush na-karde ast.
She has never forgotten her promise. (neutral standard; time expression)
The first sentence does not contain two negations that cancel. Its natural reading is that the set of people who said anything is empty. The negative prefix belongs to the finite verb; the choice between نـ and نمی or a negative perfect comes from the verb form and is covered on Negative Past and Perfect Forms.
Subject and object remain different roles
Negative meaning does not erase syntax. Subject هیچکس takes no را and normally has third-person-singular agreement. A human direct object is marked with را: هیچکس را ندیدم. With a delimited set, هیچکدام از ... را likewise identifies the alternatives being rejected.
هیچکس به پیام اضطراری جواب نداد.
hich-kas be payâm-e ezterâri javâb na-dâd.
Nobody answered the emergency message. (neutral standard; subject, no را)
در راهروی طبقهی دوم هیچکس را ندیدم.
dar râhrow-ye tabaqe-ye dovvom hich-kas râ na-didam.
I did not see anybody in the second-floor corridor. (neutral standard; human direct object with را)
از میان این چهار متقاضی هیچکدام را استخدام نکردند.
az miyân-e in chahâr motaqâzi hich-kodâm râ estekhdâm na-kardand.
They hired none of these four applicants. (formal-neutral; delimited object set with را)
An unrestricted nonhuman object commonly lacks را: هیچچیز نخریدم “I bought nothing.” The contrast is therefore not “negative expressions never take را.” It is the ordinary Persian contrast among subject, unrestricted object, and identified or delimited object.
برای سفر هیچچیز اضافهای نخریدیم.
barâ-ye safar hich-chiz-e ezâfe-i na-kharidim.
We bought nothing extra for the trip. (neutral standard; unrestricted nonhuman object)
Order changes focus, not concord
Neutral order tends to place the subject before objects and adverbials, with the finite verb at the end. Persian can front a time, place, or را-marked object when it is the discourse topic or contrastive focus. The item’s syntactic marking and the negative verb remain the same.
هیچوقت چنین برخوردی از او ندیده بودم.
hich-vaqt chenin barkhordi az u na-dide budam.
I had never seen that kind of behavior from him. (neutral standard; fronted time expression has broad emphasis)
هیچکس را در ایستگاه ندیدم؛ فقط راننده آنجا بود.
hich-kas râ dar istgâh na-didam; faqat rânande ân-jâ bud.
I did not see anybody at the station; only the driver was there. (neutral standard; fronted object is discourse-prominent)
Moving هیچکس را does not turn it into a subject, and moving هیچوقت does not create an extra negation. Position controls information structure; grammatical role is still signaled by the predicate and markers such as را.
Declaratives and questions do not license هیچ alike
In a negative declarative, هیچکس normally combines with a negative verb and means “nobody.” In a polar question, the same form can occur with a positive verb and receive an emphatic anybody at all reading. Such a question often anticipates that the answer may be negative; neutral conversation frequently prefers کسی when no such widening or bias is intended.
هیچکس برای شیفت شب داوطلب نشد.
hich-kas barâ-ye shift-e shab dâvtalab na-shod.
Nobody volunteered for the night shift. (neutral standard; negative declarative)
هیچکس برای شیفت شب داوطلب شد؟
hich-kas barâ-ye shift-e shab dâvtalab shod?
Did anybody at all volunteer for the night shift? (careful spoken; positive polar question, usually expecting ‘probably not’)
This question use is productive in present-day Iranian Persian. A positive conditional is different: modern speakers normally use کسی for neutral “anyone,” not positive هیچکس. To mean “if nobody,” retain verbal negation.
اگر کسی دربارهی قرارداد پرسید، به من خبر بده.
agar kasi darbâre-ye qarârdâd porsid, be man khabar be-deh.
If anyone asks about the contract, let me know. (neutral standard; کسی, not هیچکس, in a neutral positive condition)
اگر هیچکس برای شیفت شب داوطلب نشد، برنامه را عوض میکنیم.
agar hich-kas barâ-ye shift-e shab dâvtalab na-shod, barnâme râ avaz mi-konim.
If nobody volunteers for the night shift, we will change the schedule. (neutral standard; negative conditional)
This difference is genuinely language-specific: English any is comfortable in both questions and conditions, whereas modern Persian positive هیچ is much more restricted and especially characteristic of emphatic questions.
Fragment answers have no finite verb
A short answer can consist only of the negative expression. The missing predicate is recovered from the question, so there is no finite verb available to carry نـ. Expanding the answer into a full declarative restores negative concord.
— چه کسی گزارش را تحویل داد؟ — هیچکس.
— che kasi gozâresh râ tahvil dâd? — hich-kas.
— Who turned in the report? — Nobody. (neutral conversation; negative fragment answer)
— بعد از ناهار کجا رفتید؟ — هیچجا؛ مستقیم برگشتیم خانه.
— ba'd az nâhâr kojâ raftid? — hich-jâ; mostaqim bar-gashtim khâne.
— Where did you go after lunch? — Nowhere; we went straight home. (neutral conversation; place fragment)
نه ... نه is coordination, not ordinary concord
نه ... نه coordinates alternatives as “neither ... nor.” It can occur with positive finite verbs, especially when each نه introduces its own coordinated phrase or clause. That behavior differs from a declarative headed by هیچکس, where verbal negation is normally required.
نه مریم تماس گرفت، نه سارا پیام فرستاد.
na Maryam tamâs gereft, na Sârâ payâm ferestâd.
Neither Maryam called nor Sara sent a message. (neutral standard; connective negation with positive verbs)
Do not infer from this pattern that هیچکس تماس گرفت is an ordinary negative declarative. The dedicated نه ... نه and Negative Coordination page covers its word order and polarity options.
Common Mistakes
1. Deleting verbal negation under English influence
❌ هیچکس دلیل تأخیر را فهمید.
Incorrect for ‘nobody understood’ — a full negative declarative requires a negative finite verb.
✅ هیچکس دلیل اصلی تأخیر را نفهمید.
hich-kas dalil-e asli-ye ta'khir râ na-fahmid.
Nobody understood the main reason for the delay.
2. Treating concord items as canceling one another
⚠️ هیچکس هیچچیز نگفت.
hich-kas hich-chiz na-goft.
Grammatical, but it means ‘Nobody said anything’; the two concord items do not produce an affirmative reading.
✅ همه دستکم یک نکته گفتند.
hame dast-kam yek nokte goftand.
Everybody said at least one thing. (the affirmative meaning, expressed without negative concord)
3. Marking a negative subject with را
❌ هیچکس را به درخواست ما پاسخ نداد.
Incorrect — هیچکس is the subject of پاسخ نداد and cannot take object marker را.
✅ هیچکس به درخواست فوری ما پاسخ نداد.
hich-kas be darkhâst-e fowri-ye mâ pâsokh na-dâd.
Nobody responded to our urgent request.
4. Leaving را off a human direct object
❌ جلوی ساختمان هیچکس ندیدیم.
Incorrect in standard Persian — human object هیچکس normally takes را.
✅ جلوی ورودی ساختمان هیچکس را ندیدیم.
jelow-e vorudi-ye sâkhtemân hich-kas râ na-didim.
We did not see anybody in front of the building entrance.
5. Applying the declarative pattern mechanically to a question
⚠️ هیچکس صدای هشدار را نشنید؟
hich-kas sedâ-ye hoshdâr râ na-shenid?
Grammatical, but it asks with surprise whether nobody heard the warning; it is not the neutral/emphatic ‘anybody at all’ question.
✅ هیچکس صدای هشدار را شنید؟
hich-kas sedâ-ye hoshdâr râ shenid?
Did anybody at all hear the warning? (careful spoken; positive interrogative licensing)
Key Takeaways
- In an ordinary negative declarative, هیچ-expressions and the negative finite verb jointly express one semantic negation.
- Subject هیچکس has no را; human object هیچکس را and delimited هیچکدام ... را retain ordinary object marking.
- Fronting changes topic or focus, not grammatical role or the concord requirement.
- Positive هیچ has an emphatic “any at all” use in questions; neutral modern conditionals normally use کسی for “anyone.”
- Negative fragments and نه ... نه coordination have their own licensing and should not be forced into the full-clause concord template.
