Negative هیچ‌کس and هیچ‌چیز

Persian expresses exhaustive negative meanings with هیچ compounds such as هیچ‌کس “nobody” and هیچ‌چیز “nothing.” In a declarative clause, the finite verb is normally negative too: هیچ‌کس نیامد “nobody came,” هیچ‌چیز نخریدم “I bought nothing.” This is negative concord: the negative expression and verbal negation work together to express one semantic negation.

Standard English usually avoids nobody didn't come because two negative forms are interpreted separately. Persian is organized differently. Removing نـ from the verb does not create the intended standard declarative meaning; the هیچ expression licenses and strengthens an exhaustive negative set while the predicate carries negation.

The هیچ series

هیچ‌وقتtimeneverever in questions

This guide uses the standard ZWNJ in هیچ‌کس، هیچ‌چیز، هیچ‌جا، هیچ‌وقت، هیچ‌کدام. The half-space keeps the compound visually unified without joining letters that should remain separate.

هیچ‌کس در را باز نکرد.

hich-kas dar râ bâz nakard.

Nobody opened the door. (neutral standard)

از آن اتاق هیچ‌چیز بیرون نیاوردند.

az ân otâq hich-chiz birun nayâvardand.

They brought nothing out of that room. (neutral standard)

دیشب هیچ‌جا نرفتیم.

dishab hich-jâ naraftim.

We didn't go anywhere last night. (neutral standard)

The human form هیچ‌کس is grammatically singular, so it normally takes a third-singular verb: نیامد، نبود، نمی‌داند. Its meaning excludes every person; it does not denote a plural group that triggers plural agreement.

💡
In an ordinary negative statement, let both parts appear: هیچ‌کس + negative verb, هیچ‌چیز + negative verb. Treat them as one negative-concord construction, not as two independent English negatives.

Negative concord with subjects and objects

As a subject, هیچ‌کس does not take را. As a specific or exhaustive human object, it normally does: هیچ‌کس را ندیدم. Object marking and negation perform separate jobs.

هیچ‌کس پاسخ درست را نمی‌داند.

hich-kas pâsokh-e dorost râ nemi-dânad.

Nobody knows the correct answer. (هیچ‌کس is the subject)

در راهرو هیچ‌کس را ندیدم.

dar râhru hich-kas râ nadidam.

I didn't see anyone in the corridor. (هیچ‌کس is the direct object)

از بین این سه مدل هیچ‌کدام را انتخاب نکردیم.

az beyn-e in se model hich-kodâm râ entekhâb nakardim.

We chose none of these three models. (هیچ‌کدام selects from an explicit set)

With هیچ‌چیز, را is possible when the expression refers exhaustively to a contextually delimited set of things, but an unmarked nonspecific negative object commonly appears without it: هیچ‌چیز نخریدم. Do not insert را merely because English uses an object pronoun.

از بازار هیچ‌چیز نخریدم.

az bâzâr hich-chiz nakharidam.

I bought nothing at the market. (nonspecific exhaustive object)

هیچ versus کسی and چیزی under negation

The plain indefinites from کسی، چیزی، جایی also receive negative-polarity readings with a negative verb:

کسی جواب نداد.

kasi javâb nadâd.

Nobody answered. (neutral negative indefinite)

هیچ‌کس جواب نداد.

hich-kas javâb nadâd.

Absolutely nobody answered. (explicitly exhaustive/emphatic)

The two can describe the same event. هیچ‌کس overtly ranges over all possible people and often sounds more exhaustive or contrastive. Similarly, چیزی نفهمیدم is a neutral “I didn't understand anything,” while هیچ‌چیز نفهمیدم can stress total lack of understanding.

از توضیحش هیچ‌چیز نفهمیدم.

az towzih-ash hich-chiz nafahmidam.

I understood absolutely nothing from the explanation. (emphatic negative)

هیچ with an ordinary noun

هیچ can quantify a following noun, commonly with indefinite ـی: هیچ راهی “no way,” هیچ دلیلی “no reason,” هیچ خبری “no news.” The predicate remains negative in a negative declarative.

برای لغو جلسه هیچ دلیلی وجود ندارد.

barâ-ye laghv-e jalase hich dalili vojud nadârad.

There is no reason to cancel the meeting. (formal/neutral)

تا فردا هیچ راهی برای تعمیر دستگاه نداریم.

tâ fardâ hich râhi barâ-ye ta'mir-e dastgâh nadârim.

Until tomorrow, we have no way to repair the device. (neutral standard)

The ـی belongs to the indefinite noun phrase; هیچ supplies exhaustive quantification. This construction is productive, but the resulting phrase must still fit the verb's argument structure.

Questions and conditions without verbal negation

In questions, conditionals, and other nonassertive environments, a هیچ expression can mean “any … at all” with a positive predicate. It does not then assert a negative fact.

هیچ‌کس را نزدیک ساختمان دیدی؟

hich-kas râ nazdik-e sâkhtemân didi?

Did you see anybody at all near the building? (question; often expects a negative answer)

اگر هیچ‌کدام مناسب بود، همان را بخرید.

agar hich-kodâm monâseb bud, hamân râ bekharid.

If any one of them is suitable, buy that one. (conditional, formal/polite)

This is why “هیچ always requires a negative verb” is too crude. Negative declarative clauses show concord; questions and conditions can license an “any at all” reading without asserting negation.

Fragment answers

A short answer may consist of the negative expression alone because the predicate is supplied by the question. This is the important apparent exception to overt verbal negation.

چه کسی آمد؟ هیچ‌کس.

che kasi âmad? hich-kas.

Who came? Nobody. (neutral fragment answer)

از فروشگاه چی خریدی؟ هیچی.

az forushgâh chi kharidi? hichi.

What did you buy at the shop? Nothing. (informal, regional: Tehran; fragment answer)

The full answers would be هیچ‌کس نیامد and هیچ‌چیز نخریدم. The fragment is not a positive declarative; its negative predicate is understood from the question-answer structure.

Adverbial هیچ “at all”

Bare هیچ can intensify a negative predicate, especially in formal, literary, or carefully structured prose: هیچ نمی‌دانستم “I had no idea at all.” Everyday Tehran speech can instead use هیچی as a colloquial negative pronoun (informal, regional: Tehran).

هیچ نمی‌دانستم باید از کجا شروع کنم.

hich nemi-dânestam bâyad az kojâ shoru' konam.

I had no idea at all where to begin. (formal/literary-leaning)

هیچی نفهمیدم چی گفت.

hichi nafahmidam chi goft.

I didn't understand anything he or she said. (informal, regional: Tehran)

These are register alternatives, not grounds for marking one form ungrammatical.

Common Mistakes

1. Using a positive verb in a negative declaration

❌ هیچ‌کس آمد.

Incorrect for the intended negative declaration ‘nobody came’ — Persian requires نیامد.

✅ هیچ‌کس تا پایان مراسم نیامد.

hich-kas tâ pâyân-e marâsem nayâmad.

Nobody came before the ceremony ended.

2. Avoiding concord as though Persian followed standard English

❌ هیچ‌چیز در کیف پیدا کردم.

Incorrect for the intended negative declaration ‘I found nothing in the bag’ — the verb must also be negative.

✅ هیچ‌چیز در کیف پیدا نکردم.

hich-chiz dar kif peydâ nakardam.

I found nothing in the bag.

3. Writing compounds with an ordinary space

❌ هیچ کس تلفن نکرد.

Nonstandard guide orthography — write the compound هیچ‌کس with a ZWNJ.

✅ هیچ‌کس از دفتر تلفن نکرد.

hich-kas az daftar telefon nakard.

Nobody from the office called.

4. Giving هیچ‌کس plural agreement

❌ هیچ‌کس خبر نداشتند.

Incorrect — هیچ‌کس is grammatically singular despite quantifying over possible people.

✅ هیچ‌کس از تغییر برنامه خبر نداشت.

hich-kas az taghyir-e barnâme khabar nadâsht.

Nobody knew about the change of plan.

5. Attaching را to the subject

❌ هیچ‌کس را وارد نشد.

Incorrect — هیچ‌کس is the subject of وارد نشد and cannot take object marker را.

✅ هیچ‌کس وارد سالن نشد.

hich-kas vâred-e sâlon nashod.

Nobody entered the hall.

Key Takeaways

  • Negative declaratives normally pair a هیچ expression with a negative verb: هیچ‌کس نیامد.
  • This is one semantic negation expressed by negative concord, not an accidental English-style double negative.
  • هیچ‌کس is grammatically singular; use را only when it is an object.
  • Plain کسی/چیزی also receive negative readings under negation, while هیچ‌کس/هیچ‌چیز makes exhaustiveness explicit.
  • Positive verbs are possible in questions and conditions with an “any at all” reading, and fragment answers can omit the understood verb entirely.
