Negative Past and Perfect Forms

Persian places نـ on the lexical verb to deny past events: نرفتم “I did not go,” نرفته‌ام “I have not gone,” نرفته بودم “I had not gone.” The forms share the same negative prefix, but their tense and viewpoint differ.

English uses did not, have not, and had not as separate auxiliaries. Persian builds each contrast around a past stem or past participle. The crucial task is to preserve the correct tense structure after adding negation.

Three core negative past forms

FormStructureTypical meaningUseful time frame
نرفتمنـ + رفت + ـمI did not goa completed past occasion
نرفته‌امنـ + رفت + ه + ـامI have not goneup to now; presently relevant
نرفته بودمنـ + رفت + ه + بودمI had not gonebefore another past point
نمی‌رفتمنمی‌ + رفت + ـمI was not going / did not habitually goongoing or repeated past

دیروز فایل را دانلود نکردم، چون اینترنت قطع بود.

diruz fâyl râ dânlod na-kardam, chun internet qat' bud.

I did not download the file yesterday because the internet was down. (neutral standard; bounded simple-past negation)

تا این لحظه فایل را دانلود نکرده‌ام.

tâ in lahze fâyl râ dânlod na-karde-am.

I have not downloaded the file up to this moment. (neutral standard; present perfect)

The first sentence closes a yesterday-time opportunity. The second surveys the period up to now and leaves the file's present absence relevant. Negation does not erase this aspectual contrast.

💡
Choose the positive tense first—کردم، کرده‌ام، کرده بودم—then negate its lexical verb: نکردم، نکرده‌ام، نکرده بودم.

Negative simple past: نـ + past stem + ending

For a single completed occasion that did not happen, attach نـ directly to the past stem and keep the normal person ending: نخریدم، ندیدی، نرسید، ننوشتیم. Third-person singular still has no ending beyond the stem.

مریم دیشب به پیام من جواب نداد.

Maryam dishab be payâm-e man javâb na-dâd.

Maryam did not reply to my message last night. (neutral standard; third-singular simple past)

هفته‌ی گذشته هیچ بلیت تازه‌ای نخریدیم.

hafte-ye gozashte hich belit-e tâze-i na-kharidim.

We did not buy any new tickets last week. (neutral standard; first-plural negative past)

The negative prefix is one written word with the stem: نرفتم, not ن رفتم or ن‌رفتم. Before آمدن, the established form has نیـ: نیامدم، نیامد. The full formation is reviewed on Negative Simple Past.

Negative present perfect: نـ inside the participle

The present perfect uses a past participle plus the present copula. Negation belongs before the lexical past stem, inside the participle: نرسیده‌ام، ندیده‌ای، ننوشته است، نخوانده‌اند.

هنوز نتیجه‌ی آزمایش را دریافت نکرده‌ایم.

hanuz natije-ye âzmâyesh râ daryâft na-karde-im.

We have not received the test result yet. (formal-neutral; current relevance)

سارا این نمایشگاه را ندیده است.

Sârâ in namâyeshgâh râ na-dide ast.

Sara has not seen this exhibition. (neutral standard; third-singular perfect)

Standard spelling uses a ZWNJ before attached copulas: نرفته‌ام، نرفته‌ایم. Third-singular است remains separate: نرفته است. Present Perfect Formation gives the full positive–negative paradigm.

💡
Do not negate English have by substituting نیستم. The ordinary Persian perfect negative is one participle beginning with نـ: نخوانده‌ام, not خوانده نیستم.

Negative past perfect: before another past point

The past perfect uses the same negative participle followed by an inflected بودن: نرفته بودم، ندیده بود، تمام نکرده بودند. It says that the event had not happened by a reference point in the past.

وقتی تاکسی رسید، هنوز از ساختمان بیرون نیامده بودیم.

vaqti tâksi resid, hanuz az sâkhtemân birun niyâmade budim.

When the taxi arrived, we had not yet left the building. (neutral narrative; past perfect before a past event)

پیش از آن جلسه هیچ‌وقت با مدیر تازه صحبت نکرده بودم.

pish az ân jalase hich-vaqt bâ modir-e tâze sohbat na-karde budam.

Before that meeting, I had never spoken with the new manager. (neutral standard; past reference point)

Without a past reference point, نکرده بودم can feel incomplete: the listener expects “before what?” The simple past or present perfect is often clearer.

Negating an event versus a result-state predicate

Neutral perfect negation puts نـ on the lexical participle: در را نبسته بودم “I had not closed the door.” A superficially similar sentence can instead negate copular بودن: در بسته نبود “the door was not closed.” In the second pattern, بسته is a result-state predicate; this is not a reordered negative past perfect.

وقتی رسیدم، در بسته نبود؛ باد آن را باز کرده بود.

vaqti residam, dar baste na-bud; bâd ân râ bâz karde bud.

When I arrived, the door was not closed; the wind had opened it. (neutral narrative; result-state predicate followed by a past perfect)

Do not swap these patterns freely. To deny a prior event, negate the participle: در را نبسته بودم. To deny the state visible at a past time, negate the copula: در بسته نبود.

Compound predicates: negate the light verb

In تماس گرفتن، تصمیم گرفتن، شروع کردن، آماده شدن, negation attaches to the light verb: تماس نگرفتم، تصمیم نگرفته‌ام، شروع نکرده بود، آماده نشدند. The nonverbal element remains unchanged.

دیروز با شرکت بیمه تماس نگرفتم.

diruz bâ sherkat-e bime tamâs na-gereftam.

I did not contact the insurance company yesterday. (neutral standard; negative simple past compound)

تا امروز درباره‌ی آن پیشنهاد تصمیم نگرفته‌اند.

tâ emruz darbâre-ye ân pishnehâd tasmim na-gerefte-and.

They have not decided about that proposal as of today. (formal-neutral; negative perfect compound)

Attaching نـ to the noun would create a nonexistent word such as نتماس. The light verb supplies tense, agreement, and polarity for the compound as a whole.

Simple past or past imperfective?

Compare نرفتم “I did not go on that occasion” with نمی‌رفتم “I was not going / did not habitually go.” The prefix sequence is نمی‌, never می‌نـ.

آن روز با اتوبوس نرفتم؛ تاکسی گرفتم.

ân ruz bâ otobus na-raftam; tâksi gereftam.

I did not take the bus that day; I took a taxi. (one bounded occasion)

آن سال‌ها زمستان با اتوبوس نمی‌رفتم.

ân sâl-hâ zemestân bâ otobus nemi-raftam.

In those years, I did not take the bus in winter. (habitual past negation)

This is an aspect contrast, not optional stylistic variation. A single closed yesterday-event normally selects نرفتم.

A short exchange

— گزارش را فرستادی؟ — نه، هنوز تمامش نکرده‌ام؛ دیشب هم وقت نکردم روی آن کار کنم.

— gozâresh râ ferestâdi? — na, hanuz tamâm-ash na-karde-am; dishab ham vaqt na-kardam ru-ye ân kâr konam.

— Did you send the report? — No, I haven't finished it yet; I didn't get time to work on it last night either. (neutral conversation; present perfect versus simple past)

Common Mistakes

1. Separating نـ from the past stem

❌ دیروز به اداره ن رفتم.

Incorrect spelling — نـ attaches directly to the past stem.

✅ دیروز به‌خاطر برف به اداره نرفتم.

diruz be-khâter-e barf be edâre na-raftam.

I did not go to the office yesterday because of the snow.

2. Reversing the negative imperfective prefixes

❌ آن زمان شب‌ها می‌نرفتم بیرون.

Incorrect prefix order — Persian uses نمی‌ before the past stem.

✅ آن زمان شب‌ها تنها بیرون نمی‌رفتم.

ân zamân shab-hâ tanhâ birun nemi-raftam.

At that time I did not go out alone at night.

3. Moving ordinary perfect negation onto نیستم

❌ من این کتاب را خوانده نیستم.

Incorrect as the neutral perfect ‘I have not read’ — negate the participle as نخوانده‌ام.

✅ من هنوز این کتاب را نخوانده‌ام.

man hanuz in ketâb râ na-khânde-am.

I have not read this book yet.

4. Negating the noun in a compound predicate

❌ دیروز با مدیر نتماس گرفتم.

Incorrect — negation belongs on the light verb گرفتن.

✅ دیروز با مدیر پروژه تماس نگرفتم.

diruz bâ modir-e prozhe tamâs na-gereftam.

I did not contact the project manager yesterday.

5. Replacing the ZWNJ in the perfect with a space

❌ هنوز نتیجه را ندیده ام.

Incorrect standard spelling — the attached copula follows دیده with a ZWNJ.

✅ هنوز نتیجه‌ی نهایی را ندیده‌ام.

hanuz natije-ye nehâyi râ na-dide-am.

I have not seen the final result yet.

Key Takeaways

  • نرفتم denies a bounded past event; نرفته‌ام surveys up to now; نرفته بودم looks back from another past point.
  • Negation attaches to the lexical past stem inside simple and perfect forms.
  • Standard perfect spellings use ZWNJ before attached copulas and a space before third-singular است.
  • Compound predicates negate the light verb: تماس نگرفتم، تصمیم نگرفته‌ام.
  • Prefer neutral نرفته بودم; use marked رفته نبودم only to deny a resultant state contrastively.
